scootergeek scootergeek Post Master Supreme Registered: 07/24/00 Posts: 46248 Loc: East of St. Louis	Ok, 1985 GTI is giving me a cyclical rubbing sound from the right front end on left hand turns. My first thought was outer CV joint, but it's not clicking and doesn't happen at low speeds (meaning no weight transfer). So next I figured it was the bearing and there's a fair bit of shake at the steering wheel, so if so, I'm one trip from the grocery store from dead - but I jacked it up and there's no unusual play. I did notice that the front right tire (Toyo T1-R) had high spots (flatspotted on a track day years ago), so I rotated it to the right rear. Just did a short test drive (in case I'm still going to flip over and die like a Lotus 7 taking a corner, I want my body to be found close to home) and it felt better, but I still heard the wub-wub-wubbing sound. I don't think it's the plastic wheelhouse liner, but I can't rule it out. And it's possible that it's now coming from the right rear and I'm just fooling myself that it's still up front (in which case, the next move would be to swap the rear tires and see what happens then, but I'll probably flip over and die anyway because the tires will be on backwards). Could the bearing be bad, but just barely so that it doesn't show obvious play but cries under cornering load? Could it be something else entirely? The car is as much of a pos as you'd assume an '85 GTI to be, but all the rubber in the suspension is less than 2 years old, so it's not likely to be suspension pieces wandering around. Should I just ignore it and let the accident forensics team figure out how I died? If you have a spare, I'd throw that on in lieu of the suspect tire/wheel, just to eliminate a variable.

Driving home from work tonight the vibrations at 60mph+ scared me enough that I drove to the garage (about 9 miles closer to work than my apartment) and had my son pick me up. Still no visible play, but it does feel as if the right side wheel is dragging ever so slightly. I'll take it all apart tomorrow evening and figure out where I stand. _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...

I'll check that next. Thanks. with the non-feathered tire swapped out, it's going to be a while before you hear the sound again. My old car used to be silent on new tires, but howl like a bad wheel bearing once the alignment feathered the rear tires. scootergeek scootergeek Post Master Supreme Registered: 07/24/00 Posts: 46248 Loc: East of St. Louis	So after repeatedly throwing the car on the lift with no evidence of a worsening bearing (I've been driving it less lately, but harder trying to get the problem to become more identifiable), I'm starting to think the bearings aren't the problem. I am almost certain that the right front caliper is not cleaning sliding anymore - a little tug to the right on acceleration and a matching slight tug to the left under braking. The lines are braided, so it's likely the caliper (which I think is original). I'll do that Friday or Saturday. New tires arrive tomorrow. Going from T1-Rs that I haven't swapped out during the winters (eek) to Ecsta ASXs. But 205 section anything on a 2k lbs./110hp car is going to grip pretty well. _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...

scootergeek scootergeek Post Master Supreme Registered: 07/24/00 Posts: 46248 Loc: East of St. Louis	guy who did the tires says the left control arm bushing is bad (but he also killed my wheel bolt tool - it's got weird anti-theft wheel bolts - and the opinion of anybody who cranks the shit out of an air impact on wheel bolts is suspect). I don't see how that's possible as they were replaced 6 months ago, BUT one did get slightly mangled when it walked sideways in the press. I thought I fixed it, but maybe not. Anyway, ball joints look ok, but old as dirt, so they're getting replaced and the upper strut bushing/bearings are probably original, so they've been ordered as well. Round tires have gone a long way to fixing 60% of the issues. _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...

Replaced the entire driveshaft since that's the only way oreillys sells them. No play in the driver side or appreciable bearing play. Re-assemble and wubba wubba wubba. 80% of the vibration is gone and in general it feels better, but not right. I'm starting to think it's the differential, which will make me very sad indeed. I know the tranny was bought used, and have no idea how many miles are on it. At this point, I'm going to finish the repairs of bits I've already bought (ball joints, upper strut mounts and some other piddly stuff) and just drive until a wheel falls off or the tranny blows up. I wonder what good condition O2A transaxles go for vs. the price of an lsd. And to top it off, I bet the Alfa would have been done and on the road for the money I've sunk into this wrong wheel drive shitbox over the last five years. And comparing the quality of the mechanical parts, there's no way the Alfa would be less durable. _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...

scootergeek scootergeek Post Master Supreme Registered: 07/24/00 Posts: 46248 Loc: East of St. Louis	fixed. new front hub bearings new ball joints (passenger side had play at the clamp, not the socket) new tie rod ends (old ones were ok, but damaged in removal) new passenger side axle complete (old inner cv joint bad - $60 for the whole thing) new upper strut mounts (looked ok on removal but probably original - upgraded to Corrado VR6 mounts) Finally mounted an autotech strut tower bar that I got with the car while I had the struts out. Did the alignment with a hunk of mdf, a plumb line, a ruler and a tape measure. Probably more toe out (1/4") than is called for, but it feels good and I'll deal with it if the wear becomes excessive. Driving it this afternoon after getting it sorted reminded me why I love the car. _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...

Somebody must have flipped it to make the IP look right to Brits. EDIT fixed that. Fixed the toe today. And the headlights - both the bottom adjusters were broken and I kept putting it off telling myself that I was going to convert to rounds, but I never had the disposable money, so for 5 years now I've had useless headlights pointed at the ground about 4 feet from the car. On a hunch I tried the plastic nuts that BMW used on the E34 and though not perfect, I now have reasonably aimed headlights. Afterwards I was trying to bleed the brakes on a '63 Ford Falcon (289 with ported GT40 heads) and took a full splash back of brake cleaner to the eyes. That sucked.
