We've all done it at some point. Maybe you commented on someone's pregnancy but they weren't actually pregnant (). Share your story for a laugh.
When walking into my building at work each morning there are always people from my office (and other offices) walking out for a smoke break or to grab a coffee or breakfast etc. Recently I saw a co-worker walking out and I joked to him "Hey, y'know the office is that way right?" He didn't acknowledge me and just kept walking. Later that morning I was told he was let go. I felt like an ass

ouch.
while mine is not the traditional foot in your mouth per se --
where i work - we mostly rely on IM and occasionally share our desktop screens for troubleshooting and/or meetings.
there's this one dev guy he's useless -- can't figure out their own code (it doesn't help that i was a dev on that team prior so i can call his shit out any time i want to and it's not my job to spoon feed them any more).
so one day, there was a group IM session set up to troubleshoot their problem -- a guy on my team's leading the chat but i'm monitoring on progress. there was also another group IM which is just our team so we can chat freely amongst ourselves to coordinate other projects.
after wasting 1/2 a day, they got no where (the guy didn't even look at any app logs or check anything of value that a typical dev guy would do) -- i wanted to vent so i typed: "omg that <insert name of stupid dev guy> is so fuckin' useless!"
the guy comes running over to my desk and said: "dude, i was sharing my screen w/ everyone in the group chat when your message popped up" of course right away I got a couple of "LMAO"s coming from the folks on that project.

I still get nervous when I remember this cluster that I got myself into once.
4 years ago or so I was working at a place where I had a company issued blackberry. Why is this relevant? That BES, doe
During one of our busiest times of the year we were trying to freeze some numbers in order to project our 5 year rolling budget, unfortunately this is a hard concept for some VP’s to grasp (you have to stop making changes to a budget) and I snapped. I started bbm’ing a buddy of mine within the company about how that VP is a complete clown, I must’ve called him every name under the sun, best part is my buddy wasn’t responding. I generally wouldn’t do something like that, but I was ready to walk out as I was super frustrated with this particular VP and him throwing wrenches in my work.
Co-worker who I was sending the messages to came to my desk and told me to stop sending him those messages over bbm as he thinks someone might be reading them. O’rly? Oh FAWK!!!!!! Just as he told me this, I see dickwad VP walk by my desk and storm into IT manager’s office while looking at me.
I gotta tell you, my hands were trembling at that point, my buddy and I looked at each other, he left immediately and I just sat at my desk not knowing wtf I was going to do or how I would explain what I said. Not even two minutes into my emotional turmoil VP storms out of IT Manager’s office, gives me a stare down and storms off into his office.
5 minutes go by, hands still kinda shaky and I am basically paralyzed, I can’t think straight, my heart was in my throat, I might’ve had a mini heart attack to be honest…and then it came. VP called my desk phone and told me to come see him in his office. The stars were aligned, it was lunch time (most employees were out) and a Wednesday (textbook perfect time to let someone go). This VP has never called me into his office, so I was certain I was about to get canned. Before I went, I quickly emptied my desk, deleted personal files on my laptop, put my jacket on and put my game face on. With a straight face I walked into his office, sat down, jacket all buttoned up and everything, and I waited for it….and waited…and it didn’t come. He wanted to talk to me about something work related, I don’t remember anything he said, I was just waiting to be escorted out. Didn’t happen, I walked back to my desk and researched Blackberry BES servers while sitting at my desk with my jacket on the entire afternoon (wasn't convinced I wasn't getting let go).
Turns out the company didn’t have it.

at work, there's this nurse who's on the hefty side, a little loud. always been, looks like she's from oshawa.
so she asks me to print off this medication list for a patient, no problem. as i'm doing so she's making small talk, we say hi and bye but that's probably the extent of interaction with her.
so as she's making small talk, she starts to say that she's taking time off soon, and me, i respond with "oh yea? going on vacation??"
she was like 8 months pregnant.
i had no idea what to say, she didn't look pregnant, she just looked like her regular plump self to me! my face: i tried to play it off like "ohh yeaa, uhhh, yeaa, umm, i knew that! just uhh thought you were going to go on vacation....before....while your almost about to give....you know...birth"

Not so much a foot in the mouth but one time a buddy was nice enough to let me use his camera (DSLR) and I placed it on a speaker and forgot about it. It was vibrating on there for a good 2-3 minutes and ended up falling to the floor. I doubt he's going to let me touch his camera again. ROFL!!!

Oh that reminds me of another one:
Some fucker PM calls a 12 noon status meeting on a Friday (typical day to have lunch out w/ the team). So i dial in and put it on mute, and 1/2 listening -- cuz the restaurant was loud. Meanwhile at my table - the crew was asking what call I was stuck on etc. -- of course at the time I said, "ugh, it's just <insert PM's name>'s status and it's just going in circles, wasting time" -- for some reason the phone came off mute.
Needless to say, the PM (hosting the call) - asked who it was. I just hung up.
From that day on - I decline Friday 12 noon calls unless its a Prod issue. :p
