Im totally on board with you that in general the data is iffy no matter what we are talking about and can be interpreted a number of ways. However that doesnt mean on the whole you toss it all out the window and everything is fine and dandy *sips koolaid again*

Even if you do ignore all that there is only so long negative reporting and attitude can go before it actually influences people. With every media outlet around the world (except ours, though that is changing) reporting an unstable bubble...its only a matter of time
If the data doesnt support it the media will eventually make it happen.
