Thanks all,
Actually I hate the milk reference too, but it sure means new car now like it or hate it hahah.
It has replaced our outgoing Patriot, and her predecessor the 2005 Liberty Diesel.
I liked the little Patriot for what it was, and that was really a car with an SUV body. She did pretty well in the snow and some of the light off roading we did (very, very light) My wife was complaining about the real lack of power in the Patriot, and that she has had some close calls just by not being able to get out of the way by stepping on it.
The Patriot began having issues with the 5-speed grinding and refusing to go in gear, and this was after only 16000 miles. The service department was worthless, so we just kept driving it.
The Liberty was a solid performer, but growing lack of service with the diesel Liberty's and the warranty coming close to an end we had to get rid of her before we got the Patriot.
The Xterra is a whole different animal than both really. 1.5" more ground clearance than the Liberty, a true low range unlike the Patriot, more power than both. The VQ shines in this application, although the gas mileage will be fairly poor at 15 - 16 mpg around town.
The off road package comes with Bilstein shocks, skid plates protecting all vitals, off road lamps, clutch bypass switch, rear diff locker. The covenience side has the bluetooth, rockford fosgate 9 speaker stereo (which is very well done) tons of nooks and crannies to put shit, adjustable tie down points in the cargo area, etc. I even used the first aid kit when we got done with our hike (tore up my hand a bit climbing down a few rocks on the trail)
The on road manners are really quite good, the Bilsteins are well matched and ride better than the other Xterras we drove. The trans is very nice, truck like obviously, but shift are smooth and deliberate, clutch engagement is nice, but about halfway off the floor. Exhaust note is nice and growly, and power is very right now and well matched to the weight (4,400 lbs)
Steering is def off road tuned, as it is a slower ratio, and took the wife some getting used to (and learning that she won't roll it going 25) haha.
I am very happy with this purchase, and the fact we got the Nissan $2,250 cash incentive on top of $2,000 we talked them down off sticker. It is a steal for this price.

Hey,how's that CRD been? Has it been reliable? Does Jeep make that anymore?
Edit: That thing's got a nice steering wheel. Looks pretty sporty.

Most diesels with EGR systems have some sort of soot buildup issue in the intake tract. Hell, some of the intake manifolds that would come off of high mileage TDI's would make you shit. Almost completely closed..
I completely removed my EGR and now vent the CCV to the atmosphere.. Shitty for warranty but better for the engine in the long run.
Sucks that Jeep couldn't get the Patriot with the diesel sorted out properly, sounds like the gearing was severely fucked.

*** UPDATE ***
I was inspired by baudchaser with his review that I wanted to spread the joy as well to my fellow car enthusiasts yay!
We now have over 700 miles on the XTerra, and she has been the vehicle of choice from anything to errands to hiking to anything really.
First off, the damn thing is very comfortable. We drove an SE and the factory Nissan shocks were very rough over bumps, the Bilsteins are really well suited to the chassis, soaking up road bumps with aplomb. As a freeway cruiser, she is very quiet as mentioned before, relaxing even.
The clutch take up is very smooth, shifting is a pleasure, with a nice truck like feel, but a nice positive engagement. Getting the hang of the push down in neutral then reverse took a bit, but it is second nature now (for me anyway ha)
The 4 liter VQ variant is an excellent engine. I am enamored with it's low end torque, second gear starts are easy with no chugging, 45 MPH in 6th? sure. The exhaust note is VQ - like, but deeper, less refined than other variants, but it has a nice grunt and growl that entices you to step on it.
Funny thing is, that obviously the trade off for this nice low end is the lack of top end, and this is no different. Revving over 5 grand is not really necessary, even though the HP figures are published at 261 HP @ 5600 RPM, and it's an SUV after all. I have mistakenly barked the tires from the 1 - 2 shift by being over aggressive on the throttle, yeah, this ain't the Patriot.
The utility aspect of this vehicle is amazing. The adjustable cargo tie downs are excellent, the heavy duty roof hooks and cargo net offer a wonderful cargo utilization, and it is big back there. The fold flat cargo area and fold flat passenger seat has come in handy for a big trip to Lowe's for a new BBQ and accessories, all with no sliding around.
Plans for next weekend are in the works for a true off road trail trip down in Jefferson County with an awesome hike at the end of the trail. The trail has a few obstacles, whoopdee-do's, ruts, puddles and washboard roads, nothing super serious, but considered a 4WD required trail nonetheless, so I will be able to comment on that aspect soon enough. (On order is an Oasis air down stem kit and Superflow MV50 compressor for upcoming off road trail / backpacking / camping trips) I am also going to be buying a nice 4 inch memory foam topper and cutting it to fit the dimensions of the rear cargo area. There is enough room for a couple (even with me being 6 ' 1") for camping in comfort with some automotive screens to cover the windows.
We just heard back from the insurance company, 75 cents more a month than the Patriot. I was expecting more, but I am super happy with that.
Average MPG so far has been a calculated 17.5 MPG combined.
