Yeah...it sucks. I'm thinking that maybe during sundays 10 miler when my knee started acting up, I may have put extra stress on my back. My brother the dosctor prescribed me ice, heat, motrin and rest for the next day, but if it gets worse he can call in a script for some muscle relaxers for me.

Yesterday was another easy run - 2.5 miles on the treadmill.

Went and did a tempo run on the treadmill at lunch. Started out at about an 11:30/mile pace and over ten minutes gradually ratcheted up to 8:20/mile. Held 8:20/mile for ten minutes, then gradually back down for ten more minutes.

I hate the fucking treadmill

Me too. I HATE treadmills. It's not that they're hard, but it just feels boring.. like no progress is being made. Also it's too easy to just step off the thing lol. When running out in the city, once you're a couple miles out, there's no quitting or temptation to quit since you have to get back home \:\)

Anyway.. I has a question about running vs. using the elliptical. When I first signed up at the gym (years ago), the trainer guy said I need to maintain a heart rate of about 150-160bpm when doing cardio as that'd be the aerobic zone.. So I'd be burning fat and gaining endurance/performance. Ive basically read the same thing on the Internets. The Internets also say that having a HR that is too high will result in not as good results.

When I run, my HR is off the scale.. like 185bpm. Runners tell me that Im running to hard and too slow down, but my pace is already pretty crappy (like 8:30-9:00/mile) .. If I slow down any further, Ill barely be moving. I dunno, it just seems like I cant maintain that 155bpm when running.

Now if I go to the gym and use the elliptical machine, I can set the machine to a certain resistance so that I can maintain 155bpm throughout the excercise. What would be a more effective cardio workout..

35 minutes of running with an average HR of 182bpm
35 minutes of elliptical with an average HR of 150bpm

???

EDIT:
Here's a graph from my garmin watch from a couple weeks ago.. notice Im not even moving fast, but my HR keeps going upward towards death \:\(

I dont really want to be big and bulky. Ive always had decent muscle tone without even doing much at all. I think it's a black thing.

So I just want to lose weight and looked nice and toned by summer, so I wont feel embarassed if I want to go shirtless at Intervention @ the Hard Rock in Downtown San Diego.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_k6WYHycBM

I'm kind of the same. My heart rate gets pretty high running even at a slow pace. Below is my run today. A tempo run with ten minutes building from 11:00 min/mile to 8:30 min/mile, hold at 8:30/mile for ten minutes, then ten minutes working back down. You also not above that I didn't recover much when I slowed the pace for the last ten minutes. It drops pretty quickly though when I slow to a walk.

I cannot run at any pace and hold my heart rate below 160 bpm. My max is around 205.

4 miles this morning of speed work. At least "speed" by my slow standards. Warm up, 6 rounds of 400 m at a fast pace followed by 400 m of light jog, then cool down.

Nice! For me, the speed stuff was real important, it seemed like it kind of got my legs used to that pace, which then made running that fast for the whole run come a lot more naturally.

Thanks man. I'm still hoping for a 1:55 or so run, but since it's less than a day after that 100 mile bike ride, I'm not sure I'll be 100%.
Good thing is I'm signed up for the Shamrock N half marathon in March as well. I plan to PR that one no matter what. \:D

The middle kid is home sick with a stomach flu, so I hopped on the trainer while she was taking a nap. Did an hour tempo ride while watching cooking shows, lol. When they cut to commercial I'd shift and hammer out at max effort till the show was back on. I was sweating like a mofo by the end!

Tonight I plan on running to the pool (2.5 miles) swimming about 3000 yards, then run home.

Yep....and limiting calories to 1600 regardless of what I burn.

Pushed the jogger today for 4 miles at an 8:07 pace, then got home and jumped on the trainer for 45 minutes. Great workout. Hit 173.6 on the scale today too.

Plan for this weekend:
Sat: 11 mile run
Sun: 80 mile bike ride.

Damn bro, you dont look like it (no offense at all), but you're a pretty good runner.

Are you going to do the Long Beach half-marathon? It's sometime in summer. Looks like you'll be able to breeze through it right now. I want to try it. Probably gonna end up average 10 min/mile \:\(

I know. Short legs, still slightly pudgy...it just doesn't add up. Honestly, I think it's just that I've been putting the training in...and the fact that I just really enjoy running.

My wife ran the full Long Beach Marathon last year, but I won't be doing it this year because it will be really close to when I'm doing Ironman Arizona. I'm running the Palm Springs half in 2 weeks, which is the day after the Palm Springs 100 mile bike ride I'm doing as well. Then I'm doing the Shamrock n'Half up in Sacramento on St Patty's Day.

I got the ok from the doc on Wed. that I could start training again. I ran for the first time since early Nov. on Friday. I did 5.5mi in just over 46.min.. I should have taken it a little easier because I paid for it yesterday morning.
