Well done noise for me is fantastic as it simulates grain. A tactile thing as well as nostalgia. Fil, nice work with the 5D. Had any Err20s yet? Mine has to go into canon for a repair. This damn err20 is annoying as all hell. Sometimes I shoot a whole card and no problems, other times, using the same card but formatted and fresh, I get 2 shots out of 50 shutter fires. sucks!

Nate, love the gritty feel of the steering wheel shot.

That was one of my friends in the car. He popped his go pro on the windshield and said "make it interesting!" on his ride along

This was fun to climb down to with a mild ankle sprain from riding last weekend, learned to make sure your battery is charged before riding out to take pics.

Any suggestions for a small tripod? There were a couple of angles I wanted to try to shoot, but no where to rest the camera (that I could reach anyways).

I suggest you don't cheap out on a tripod. If you do, you WILL end up buying a better one eventually, so just skip the newb step and buy a good one to begin with.

Yes. A helpful suggestion after Nate's extremely rude and useless reply.

I know what the OP is talking about with that shot. If it isn't a long exposure, you can always use your camera bag, a trash compactor bag, etc.

Yeah, I guess you can hike around (sprained ankle you said?) with an 055XPROB + 2lb head (if that's good enough for Nate ). I do if I know where I'm taking it, but not just for meandering around in the woods / climbing down that BOULDER in the photo...

I think rather than a small tripod/gorilla pod deal, a 1 gallon zip-lock bag 3/4 filled with dry rice and then securely taped up with gaffer's tape would be more useful in most instances (you could set it up on a rock, a tree branch, a car door, etc.)

Nice. That's a good idea.

I stole the trash compactor idea from a book I'm reading. It's something to go prone on if taking a ground level shot. Keeps you clean and safe from stuff on the ground.

I get what Nate was saying, don't buy a cheap pos tripod thats not going to last. But I think I'll try Scott's essentially free idea of a bag of rice duct taped shut first, along with a gorilla pod. Gonna toss those books on my amazon wish list too...

this one's for you, scott. i asked him about the extra 1/8" or so at the top and the damaged negative...he said his print is likely after the damage, but i dont' know if it has the extra bit at the top or not...

El Sig...

Sorry I missed this. I moved and killed my computer in the process.

Anyway, I have just a hair more at the top and of course no signature. I need to photograph it eventually so I can try to track down where it's from (it's too big to be an original print, but it could be a third party reproduction from one of the early prints. It's awfully nice for a quick buck scammer. A couple weeks later, I bought a small print of Yosemite Falls from the same seller in a local antique mall that looks like a straight print from one of AA's negatives, very flat with lots of lost detail in the blacks and whites, but it was cheap. My guess is the seller picked them up at an estate sale since he/she made no effort to capitalize on AA's name or even the quality of the frames).

I heard the founder of your school had a massive personal collection of original prints from all the 20th century biggies (my commercial apps teacher got his masters at Brooks is still in love with the place).

At some point you're going to have to get a good tripod so start looking now and make a wishlist that will last. For under $500 you can get a great legs and a head (wish women were this cheap...) that will last. You probably won't be into carbon fiber legs at that price but some great aluminum legs with macro arm and a good strong head will go a long way into crazy situational setups.

Whatever, if any of you guys don't believe me you've obviously never had a tripod fail. Or maybe you've never used a good tripod and that's why you think a cheap one is an acceptable solution. But by all means, don't listen to me. Try one for yourself.

a bag of dry rice is a great value over a gorilla pod you actually have to buy.

and if you're buying gorilla pods to mount flashes to weird spots, look up the clamp. i don't know if another company makes one, but manfrotto's clamp is tits for putting it where it doesn't belong, and if you have something strong enough to clamp TO, it'll hold a lot of weight securely.

I worry my current tripod and head aren't quite up to snuff. I notice some post-lock droop in the head with heavy lenses. that's all, though. lock, slight droop, it stops. you just get used to it.

250~300 seems like that magic first price point where you're satisfied for a while. 500~1000 (not counting gimbles) looks like gear that will be in your will, dead solid, and can be thrown down a small hill.

i know with my beefy fluid head my tripod is more of a video one, but it does manage to hold my entire rig including a long heavy metal 70-210 3.5 vivitar 1 series, 160 led light, zoom h4n sound recorder, and rode video mic no prob. The shoulder rig itself probably weights close to 10 lbs, entire rig, must be closer to somewhere around 20 lbs.

Its the davis and sanford (tiffen) pro vista tripod with FM18 fluid head.

i got it for $170 shipped with a little roller dolly that came free and a tripod bag.

I actually very much prefer it to the manfroto 501 fluid head setups the school has which probably cost 4x as much.

Justin Clamp. Very worth having, already has a cold shoe built in. And, it can mount a speedlight to a light stand without needing to buy a separate cold shoe. Though that said, I have a cold shoe (foot) that came with my SB-900 with a Manfrotto RC2 quick release plate mounted to it so I can turn my tripod into a lightstand when necessary - the spare plates cost about $8 a pop and are totally worth it, imo.
