Post one random shot *per day*

This is a thread with a purpose of getting some of your shots out there; whether you want to show off, find out if a picture is interesting or not, receive general comments/critiques or just to show us where the world of photographic adventures is taking you or has taken you, post 'em in here. Limit it to one per day or else it'll end up just being a flood of pictures with no real input, and please include your equipment to prevent the usual gear follow-up questions later.

There are *plenty* of equipment discussions in this forum already, so please keep the discussion in this thread to the pictures and artistic/technical evaluations of the pictures. Be critical if you must, but don't be mean or degrading about it; at the same time, I'm sure everyone will appreciate honesty, so if a shot doesn't work for you, say it!

I can see where you're coming from, particularly since you can't really tell that The Arch is an arch, so it doesn't really tie in with the archways in the bridge itself. I hadn't noticed that until now because "the Arch" is such an omnipresent fact in my life.

I've got a slightly different shot that crops out the sky, but also takes out the roadway. Since this is a one-shot-a-day thread...

Lafora - awesome, what can I say?

scootergeek - I like the location but I think it could use a tighter crop. Also, I'm not sure if it's my monitor/color profile but I see all sorts of artifacts (sharpening halos, jaggies, some CA)

mrbeefhead - I like it, although oddly the WiFi sign kinda ruins it a little (obviously not your fault, but still one thing I noticed)

2000SiRacer - I love it, although I'm also really curious to see how that shot would be if given the B&W treatment

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

the length is the least of your worries. You centre framed the car and then tried to save it by doing a "wide screen" crop

Problem started when you centre framed the car. That just pigeonholed you in terms of composition. Can't even do shit if you wanted to recompose it via cropping.

Limerock isn't hard to photograph. Tons of greenery for environment, a bridge to use for leading or exiting and my favourite armco barriers.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

lol I was just practicing panning shots man, The car wasn't completely center framed but I didnt like the look with it full height.

This is a "post one random shot per day" not "post fully polished perfect images"

That said the criticism is appreciated.

did a creative with a new stylist and a new model last week. Coming home I didn't think I had anything since the styling wasn't exactly my cup of tea and the model was a bit too stiff and didn't know her angles. But I think I learned something out of it. At least she was skinny enough I didn't have to do any liquifying in post. Same can't be said of the chick I shot 2 days ago

My first photo with the 105mm f/2.8G (macro lens). Ironically, not very macro.

It is, however, another example of layer masking to the rescue. The drops of red food coloring in the air are from one photo, the red coloring already in the water is from another photo a split second later. Shooting with a tripod + layer masks = having your cake and eating it too.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Two different shots on two different days. First one took about an hour to set up, shoot and process. Second shot was a more careful, thought out approach to correct issues I had with the first attempt. Same mug with the same beans.

(I know this breaks this one shot a day policy, but I wanted to show the comparison)

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

For the second shot I lowered the lights on either side to avoid direct reflections on the mug's rim. I also took a second shot with the light on CL turned off to get rid of reflections on the handle (also had to refocus down on the handle). Lots more cloning/patching to make the beans pretty and curves adjustment to give it that warmer color.

In all seriousness, I'm very torn over that photo. Sometimes I love it and oftentimes I hate it. I'm not this wishy washy on any other shot I've taken either

I think it has to do with the colors. I want to play with those and try to get rid of this sickly color cast without really altering things too much.

I don't know that the color cast detracts from that photo--at least it doesn't for me. It's there, it's pretty obvious, but you could always wax philosophical and say that urban decay (credit that contest theme idea to X) and its symptoms (graffiti) are a societal sickness.

Beyond the fact that they ARE recognizably buffalo, I don't feel I need too much detail since it's about them standing around eating shortly after the sun popped it's head out. However, I've been working on figuring out layer masks and went back and re-processed it. I'll put the after pic in the same post as the first.

The hardest part, right now, for me seems to be figuring out how many and which operations to do in each layer and when to start a new layer and what previous layer that should be based off of. I've shut down CS3 in disgust in the middle of fucking up an image a half dozen times in the last few days.

BTW Here is my random photo of the day:

Taken with my 105 micro and some SB600s.
In LR I played with the exposure, saturation, contrast, sharpening and added some vignetting. It was pretty easy because the texture and color is pretty consistent throughout the frame (no grass or leaves to give it away).

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Why I like this shot:

- taken before I knew the first thing about photography (ie completely lucked out on the ambient/artificial light balance)
- taken with a 4.0MP Canon S400 (from 2003) and I was shooting in Medium size JPEG lol 2.0mp?
- no tripod
- post process consists entirely of a crop in MS Paint

I like this photo as a reminder that what you shoot and how you shoot it is infinitely more important than the equipment with which you shoot it. The idea being that keeping this in mind will prevent me from shooting too many more "interesting lightpoles at night" and praying the characteristics of $$$ gear will make it interesting

EDIT: sadly enough, you can see in my signature that flickr has deemed the lightpole in question to be my most interesting photo

My random shot for today. Taken over the weekend at a Storm Readyness Expo we had at the Ocala Airport. Took about 150 shots, but I was using a CP and a lot of them came out darker than I thought they would. Kinda bummed about that, but oh well.

This was taken from the ATC tower.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Hmm, if I can remember correctly:

- Messed with the Shadows/Highlights, brought down the shadows a bit and bumped the highlights just a little.
- Used Selective Color to get some more color out of the reds, blues, and greens. The CP kind of made them dull looking.
- Bumped up the Exposure a tad since it was a little dark.
- Filter > Sharpen
- Bumped up the Vibrance to like +3 and Saturation to +3 or 4.

That's pretty much it. Like I mentioned, this was shot from the ATC tower which was really dark inside. They were cool enough to open one of the blinds for me to shoot out of. I was really bummed about how a few of my other shots came out because of my lack of skill using a CP. I haven't really messed with them PP wise yet though.

I tried using the Sunny 16 Rule, but I was doing something wrong since all my shots were too dark, even with it being a bright day out with almost zero clouds. I dunno, I'm still such a n00b at this shit, I need to shoot more and read more on technique.

Which shooting mode were you using?

You've got me a bit confused here.

Why are you messing around with something like the Sunny 16 rule? You have a modern camera with TTL metering. Since the light isn't being metered until it passes through the CPL your camera should still be returning a "correct" exposure. As always, just keep an eye on your histogram and dial in exposure compensation as needed.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

I was in Manual mode. I should've used P or A, now that I think of it.

Honestly, I just wanted to play around with the Sunny Rule, no real reason at all. Again, I'm still relatively a n00b when it comes it using my D80.

I was keeping track of my cameras meter, but it was so bright out that I could barely see it at times, especially with my sunglasses on. I'd say the first 20-25 pics I took were underexposed quite a bit.

I really need to use the histogram more, that's something I definitely slack on.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

I know that camera will now meter through the CP filters but I do feel like the CP filter can play tricks on the camera. I use a Hoya 77mm CP and sometimes things just look off.

for example
I should have been able to shot much faster that 1/6th at F/11 with a 400 iso. There were very few clouds in the sky.

Too bad my train picture were all before the start of the current contest.

There are a handful of situations where manual is appropriate, but 99% of the time you should be in A or S.

You were metering for a dark colored train that was presumably in the shadows. You can see that the building and sky in the background were overexposed.

Are you sure that you didn't have an ND filter or something on there though? 1/6th at f/11 and ISO400 is ridiculous for any type of daytime shooting

Yeah, but a CPL shouldn't cut enough light to get you down to those settings. You'll lose a stop or two, but 1/6th of a second in afternoon daylight? Ridiculous!

Dark enough shade will do that. If you had taken the CPL off you might've gotten 1/10th or 1/15th, but CPLs don't suck up that much light.

An old macro attempt with my Nikon 16-85 and a single SB-900. My old laptop was so far off that I could only make out T-shirt detail in the shadows and the area at the top center of the frame wasn't gray, it was still white! Now I'm looking at it and seeing all kinds of things I don't like.

so yeah, I'm thinking I'd like to try this again with a macro lens, white paper instead of a T-shirt and what I know now about lighting (one, big soft source instead of ~6 flashes with a bare speedlight.

I like the use of the tree to frame the rider. Ideally, it's better to see the rider heading towards the viewer rather than away (I took a lot of butt shots of skateboarders before I figured that one out), but I also understand that sometimes the logistics of the place demand otherwise.

thanks - it was a snapshot, so the flaws are due to haste.

I think my thumb is triggering the shutter, but it's obscured by my hand. It actually feels more natural to hit the shutter with your thumb when you're using this camera - hitting with the index finger is awkward.

and I did not even notice the other lens reflection in that seam before you mentioned it!

no filter on that? wow

attackofthehun-24

I was *so* pissed i fucked this up. cut off the hand, and couldn't get a nice level shot because i was hand-holding pretty much prone/on my stomach on the ground so i could hardly see through the viewfinder.

there's so much I would have done with this, but after seeing the blown setup, i didn't really feel like it anymore. WILL DO AGAIN with some actual purpose next time.

Probably

I'll chalk it up to my laziness meaning I rarely do layers or anything other than changes that affect the whole image, and flickr's sharpening algorithm.

Here's two from this evening. My cousin spotted this owl when we were working on my driveway lights. Ran inside to grab my cam and tripod to get a few pics. It was on my neighbors property and kept flying around so it was hard for me to get close to it. Wish I would've had something more than the 18-135mm.

Honestly, I'm sure that'd work fine in a pinch. Front elements aren't nearly as delicate as we seem to think

That's dust on his sensor though, so now I'm picturing someone removing the lens and using Mirror Up to spit on his sensor

Actually, the dust is stuck to the sensor. I have a blower and it does nothing.

It needs a wet cleaning and I don't think that spit is nikon approved....it may be ok for a canon.

of the greasy-fisted pix i took reworking my bike, i ended up liking this one so much i re-exported it in a fitting size for my background

what i'm curious about is how I could have made the transfer to b/w better. I just let lightroom do it this time around, but there seems to be a lot of work in doing this "right".

here's the original color version that, aside from some color temp tweaking, didn't get any real color-related treatment

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

There are a million and one ways to do it here. Here's how I might approach the image you posted:

Open up the file in CS4
Add a 'Black & White' adjustment layer
Add a 'Levels' layer above that
Set the blending mode of the Levels layer to 'Hard Light'
Tweak the levels adjustments and opacity of levels layer to get the look you want
If you were starting with a more colorful photo I'd recommend tweaking the 'Black & White' layer to fine tune things, but in this case the levels tweaks should be sufficient

Give that a shot and let me know what you think. If you're looking for something less contrasty for this image (which I doubt) you can try other blending modes, but hard light is a good place to start.

That actually is two exposures layered. To get the sky like that, the building and car were black as fuck, and when I exposed for the car the sky obviously was blown out.

That was a compromise of shots because if I went brighter on the car (I do have a shot taken +1 from that) it makes the shot look very fake and as if the car is floating. This is probably due to my inferior photoshop masking skills, but it is what it is...

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

We call it the "Anti-Rig shot." Here's an example (not the one I'm doing in that other photo but the same concept)

The June cover was the first time I tried it, I learned a few things but overall I am happy with it.

So you guys are correct, it is done "car to car." Basically you do it like this: shoot the subject car, jack it up and spin the front and back wheels, and then pull the subject car out of frame and allow the "camera" car to roll slowly to create the blurred background. Composite later much like you would with any "still" photo. Might sound like a pain in the ass, but it is. Wait... Srsly tho it's not too bad, it generally takes the same amount of time as a normal boom arm rig shot, the benefits of this method are that you can use any length lens you feel like and are not limited by the physical length and inherent instability of your boom arms.

Nope, I'm never doing speeds over like 3-5 mph max. What I do is walk alongside the camera and hold the cable release in one hand and the camera strap in the other, "just in case."

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

It's basically like how we did the RX-7... Except, the other way around. The camera is attached to another car instead of the boom arms. That way, I can have it further away. Light the subject car, shoot just like it was a still photo. The blur part is accomplished as the last part of the shot by first physically removing the subject car form the photo entirely (aka drive it off to the side) so your frame is just background. Then you move the "camera" car with the camera position remaining fixed. That gives you a nice blurred background plate to drop the body of the subject car onto to finish it up.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

I found a little waterfall that a couple different species of egrets and herons liked to fish at and then spent about 6 hours there over two days. After about an hour or so of very limited movement or talk, they kind of get acclimated to you (still though, this is 400mm on a crop frame camera). They flew away several times and I had to wait for them to come back.

cheers,
scott

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

nate, would a slider on a heavy duty tripod work the same way? (or a dolly with tracks?)

you can make them pretty long up to 100" on a slider with 2 or 3 tripods supporting, or on a dolly really long. (if your going the same direction as teh track, youll need some sort of riser to raise the camera a bit so the track doesnt get in the shot.)

Seems like easier setup and execution than on a truck, but thats just me

Nate047

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

In theory yes, that would work the same way. There's a few reasons I won't be trying it tho. First being, I already have the rig setup and money is tight... Second, it takes about 3-5 minutes to set up the rig, and can be done by one person. It's actually very easy and low tech. Also, a rig on the hood of a car/truck is far less intrusive and attention grabbing when you don't have a location permit than a 30'-40' dolly... You need to have the ability to move the camera a long way if the shot requires it, so the setup you have pictured would not suffice.

The dolly is just overkill basically. Generally speaking, a stock suspension car moving slowly along reasonably even pavement will be smooth enough (especially considering the whole point of the shot is "blur") for the kind of shot I'm going for. However, there are situations where you can't fit a camera car... i.e if you want the camera hanging off a cliff over a gaurd rail etc... Like most anything photo related, it's not an exact science, lots of it is up to interpretation and personal taste, as well as circumstantial shit that you can't always control and instead have to just deal with and make what you can from what you've got lol. And at the end of the day, you only do shots like this if the car is moving in a straight line. Anything with a curve and suddenly you're into vector blur and post processing to get the look... Which is a whole other story

that night-time shot was not film, that was with my 30d

the chinatown one was B/W film, I think probably Ilford HP5+ 400 speed.

the cycling shot was Fuji Velvia 100

the snow scene was the 30d digital.

On the chinatown and cycling pictures is it the film, camera settings or processing that gives you that look?

On the digitial pictures are you pushing the contrast and the blacks. I am not sure what you are doing but it gives your pictures a weighty and substantial feeling that I can not accomplish.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

the color film is very contrasty, it's color slide film - Fuji Velvia - and it's known for saturated colors and deep blacks.

The Ilford b/w was underexposed which is what pushed the blacks down. That's shot with a Holga which has a fixed shutter (roughly 1/100) and only two aperture settings, an equiv f/8 and f/11, but again that's an estimate.

But I also do some tweaking in lightroom, mostly playing with the tone curve to selectively alter different zones. I can't remember exactly what I did with the street shot to be honest.

I fixed the horizon and cropped it in LR2, but it seemed boring to me so I left it as it was shot.

It actually wasn't a u-turn at all. I took the shot looking left and panned as the car drove by. The reason it looks like a u-turn is because my neighbors driveway is on a slant so the camera was level looking both ways down the road, but was pointed upward a bit looking across the street. With that weird movement when panning, it makes it look like a u-turn.

Thanks. The building I was near had a shitty, bright ass reddish light, as you can see. I'll have to try burning them. Not too versed on dodge & burning just yet.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

This is where the graduated ND filter in the latest version of Camera Raw comes into its own - you could easily (and evenly) darken that in ACR 6.0 with just a few clicks.

If you guys haven't bought it yet, at least try the free 30 day download of CS5.

One way to do it without ACR is to select the trees and foreground (either through a mask or just a wand) and then make your brush for the burn tool big enough to cover the entire selection, so that you can burn it evenly. Set the tool at say 20% and use it several times until you get where you want to be. You might have to then use it with a small brush along the edges of your crop to clean them up, but it's easier than using a small brush all the way through and trying to keep everything even. At any rate, the key to burning and dodging (IMO) is to do it as a series of light (low percentage) changes rather than big ones. And don't be afraid of using selections to make sure you don't color outside the lines.

cheers,
scott

Frog was an O RLY? It was pointed out to me, and I "zoomed" in to 55mm and got a shot or two until it disappeared. The entire nature area will be a lake soon, so I went out there between thunderstorms to scout places for later.

Another one of 500 pics from yesterday. This was after one of many downpours:

I'm going to jump in next time. All of my non-electronic stuff from yesterday is still drenched.

Amazing, the places you'll find geocaching... This entire area is hidden in plain view. We only made it to the civil war bridge ruins so far.

I played with them, they get all funky and banded very quickly - particularly if you try to remove the color cast from the clear parts of the sky. I worked on that layer from scratch twice and finally decided that low contrast/low saturation worked best. If my post skills improvement over the next year is similar to the last year, maybe I'll turn out something better next year.

f/5.6 would have blurred the trees in the background out a bit more, but just a bit since he's relatively close to them compared to me. I had been shooting a bridge over the Mississippi when this guy landed and I just turned and shot, not smart enough to open it up.

If somebody would like to donate a 400 f/2.8 or 600 f/4, I'll gladly take it and I promise to improve the bokeh in all my shots.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

My opinion about animal shots is that you need to catch them doing something specific to who they are or you need eye contact.

Getting a squirrel sharply focused in the first place is a challenge, so good job on that score. I took maybe 20 shots of a rabbit the other night and maybe 4 are halfway sharp and only one has good eye contact.

Mike,

The picture is cute but I would work on the color balance as it seems a bit cool and sharpen the area around the eyes.

I think this is the best I can do with Picasa:

I made some color presets for harsh sunlight (bumped up contrast and colors). Just didn't think about it when transitioning too the zoo.

Something else. Some pics are in Av, but I've found myself using manual mode 90% of the time now. Too many shots lost because the camera decided to give me a 2" exposure time or vice-versa.

There are more pictures of the Meerkats digging and kicking dirt everywhere. Still has some on his face.

Going through pics, I realized I left the shutter speed at 1/4000 in Tv mode (usually 1/125 to avoid blur from shake) from shooting the moon the other night. One more reason not to use auto modes.

The pics with high shutter speed and ISO look pretty good. A 4X6 would be pushing it, though.

The on-camera flash is lighting up the glass imperfections to where they are distracting. I've become OCD about cleaning after taking pics inside around the house. Lint, dust, and smudges = hulk rage, followed by cleaning again.

I leave my camera at f2.8 / 1/60s for indoors, and usually forget that when I step outside. Getting better at catching it.

Speaking of catching things outside:

Not the best pic quality. The indoor to outdoor transition turns my lenses into condensation machines.

I used a 70-200 F4L for the bird pics. A 55-250 would look about the same, but at a higher f-stop, with a little less background blur. Most birds I have posted weren't too far away - the 200mm is a little short for birding.

The only way to get better is to take bad pics first. I'm doing an excellent job at that, considering my keeper rate. \:D

We both need to be shooting in RAW. I'm putting off trying it as well. Right now, I'm still learning basic tips and tricks after getting exposure down well enough to use manual.

Here is another pair of birds. Accidentally left the camera at 1/4000sec shutter, but it still came out ok:

Edit - get an "Exif Reader" plug-in for firefox, or whatever browser you use. If the photographer leaves the data there, then you can see what his settings were for the shot. That's how we're haX0ring into the pics you're posting.

Your logic is backwards. If you want the bokeh effect you have to shoot closer to wide open aka a SMALL f/stop number (ie: 1.8, 2.0, 4.0... whatever the lowest number your lens will do).

GB
(Post Master Supreme)
08/08/10 03:18 AM
Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Lower F/Stop Number = Wider Aperture = More Light & SMALLER AREA OF FOCUS

Higher F/Stop Number = Stopped Down/Narrow Aperture = Less Light & Very LARGE AREA OF FOCUS.

Aperture is the iris inside of your lens (see my avatar). The further it is open, the lower the number, and the smaller area of your image will be in focus. You will get the blurry, bokeh-filled image.

When you close it down it obviously lets in less light but a large portion of the image will be in-focus (assuming you focus the camera correctly).

When I started out I remembered "low number, small area of focus. large number more in focus."

ok, so i was shooting today w/ 2x 500ws monoblocks on 1 vagabond II pack, and for the most part, after i pop one shot, one of the lights would turn off. i'm guessing b/c of the fast recycle time of my lights, it's drawing so much juice right after the pop that one of em simply shuts off. might need to get another VBII. do you have that problem?

Nate047
(Post Master Supreme)

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Scott, wait until you see the image build of this one, it's a doosey Lots of time goes into these kind of shots, but I still am rarely 100% satisfied with the results. Each time I learn something new from my mistakes. \:\)

Andrew, your vagabond *may* be faulty. As I understand it, the fast recycle setting just recharges faster and hence the battery is drained quicker because of that. Being on fast vs slow should not cause any more power to be drawn at the time of the flash, so why one of the lights is powering off is beyond me. Does this ever happen if you just plug the light into a wall? Is it always the same light that shuts off? I use my 2 600ws lights at full power on a regular basis, but on slow recycle. I honestly have never tried it on fast because a with a car it doesn't really make a difference weather the recycle time is 15 seconds or 2 seconds...

The battery pack DOES get noticeably "loaded down" I guess you could call it, like it sounds like it's about to die but it doesn't... I would suggest seeing if you can recreate the issue with the lights plugged into a wall to see if its a problem with the vagabond or the lights themselves.

Nate

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

the lights are fine when plugged in the wall. today was the first time using the VBII. let me try to explain a little better...

when i turn everything on initially, it's fine. the lights come up to power waiting to discharge. as soon as i pop, it obviously pulls juice to recharge for the next pop. the problem is, i'm guessing, that right after pop, both lights draw so much power at once (b/c they do seem to recycle much faster than the calumets/hensels/white lighting that i've tried in studio)...that the battery can't handle that much load at that short moment after pop...it simply shuts down one of the lights. it wasn't a specific light either. sometimes it was one light that shut off, sometimes the other. i was using varying power. on a rare occasion, both would stay on.

i guess i'll send an email to PCB and see if it is faulty.

8a fffffFFFFF$$$$$$UUUUUUU

i'm using the D1 500ws blocks. i think i might just end up getting another VBII and shoot 1 light per. $270 is way cheaper than any profoto battery setups. even the Acute B 600 battery pack setup is expensive b/c it only has 1 head outlet...ends up being more expensive than 7b pack & 2 heads.

EDIT:
looks like profoto came out w/ their own battery pack. even w/ a discount, the AB setup is a great bargain

Yea that is not really worth it IMO...

http://www.innovatronix.com/explorerXT.asp

I'm considering picking up one of these guys myself so I can start using my older not fancy but more powerful Bron Primo heads outdoors. For my uses, I can run up to 2400 w/s through it on slow. (maybe more? worst that can happen is you blow the fuse while testing) And if you're using fast recycle, you should still be able to run 1000w/s through it with no problems.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

Ooof, okay. Here's the short version... Basically my thinking with this set is to try and keep the car dark. It would be much easier to go into the studio, "surround and drown" the car and call it good. A lot of car studio photography is actually very boring looking. The guys bring the car in, throw it under the bank, blast the shit out of it and go home. The nature of a photo cove is such that it's hard to take a "bad" photo unless you're a complete moron. It's much harder to take a car into a room where you are literally surrounded by white reflective surfaces... And try to make it dark. It's hard to explain, and I am not shitting you when I say that this is the most demanding shoot I have ever done.

My answer to this problem of keeping it dark in a white room is to use very controlled lighting. Snoots, grids, barn doors, cine foil, black foam core and fabric... And in Photoshop, layer layer layer layer layer layer layer layer layer! lol. The setup pictured above is in essence, only for the side of the car. To be 100% honest, the other lights were turned on for show/behind the scenes/blog purposes to provide general fill light for illustrative purposes. I will gladly share the final image when it's done, but that won't be for a while LOL. Essentially, each part of the studio is lit as part of the scene. The black foam core on the ground is not part of the final image, nor is the flag blocking the back light from flaring the lens. The pack and the table of shit is not in the shot, but the hanging rope is, and yes I "styled" it like that. I put the walls in because I think they look cool, can't really think of a better way to say it lol. The floating "cloud" aka the huge canvas flat above the set is inside the crop of the shot, as is the structure of the wall flats. I guess you could say I'm using the studio as a location (literally) instead of trying to white everything out. There's a fantastic set of photos of a green Lamborghini Gallardo that I'm using as inspiration.

There are a LOT of differences, like not having a fucking LAMBORGHINI (or the associated budget for rentals and repairing the cove after painting tire tracks on it) but conceptually mine are not far off. Like I said I'll share more when it's done, right now it's in my head still for the most part, but after importing/backing up... I can see the pieces, and it's gonna be good. \:D

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

The studio concept is like a light box for cars, but how I'm using it is kind of like taking a light box and trying to put crap in it to get shadows/shape to the light instead of surrounding everything with soft white light. I shoot tethered to my Macbook Pro when I can, that is not the same computer I use for editing. It's good for checking at the time of shooting, MUCH better than the LCD screen on camera, but it's nowhere near "calibrated." I use an Eizo Coloredge CG211 on my G5 at home.

The Mike V. shot above was his third try at that ollie to smith stall. He slammed hard coming in the previous two attempts and between the pain and anger he had to walk off to be alone for a couple minutes. I captured this shot right before he got back up and landed it. I couldn't not take it (in fact I rattled off six or seven frames to make sure I got a clean shot), but it seems way too invasive to put up on fb or flickr, but I need to share it:

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

You'll do fine, Hoss. People only really get into trouble when they start fucking around with auxiliary lighting and have absolutely no idea how to use it effectively or properly (aka the shot you posted)

Do what you know, don't "practice" on this shoot. If you are worried about anything not working out, do the "safe" shots first and then try the crazy stuff. That way, worst case scenario you still have your bases covered.

Absolutely. What I'm really worried about is a time crunch. I doubt I'll be out of work until 7. Then 45 mins to location. sunset is 8:00pm. We;re gonna start with rolling shots, and then go from there. I don't even have a final shoot location planned. I hope we have enough time

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

My thing about lighting is if I can easily tell how a photographer did it, I probably won't like it. Joe McNally's best stuff doesn't look intentionally lit, but more like he just got really lucky with perfect ambient lighting and I eat that shit up and desperately try to imitate it.

I love Nate's super complicated and very purposeful set ups, but that road is too intimidating for me to even think about starting down.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

The next 2 issues coming out have some of my favorite stuff I've shot so far in them... The November cover image (EVO X on page 18) looks fucking fantastic and I never say that about my own photos, but this one came out SO good. Sometimes it really is hard for me to sit on my hands and not post things that are not "released" yet. Making cars look good, while not really looking "lit" is very hard, but that's the direction I have been trying to move towards lately. Joe McNally has some very fantastic shots that follow that same general guideline, but also a good amount of his stuff is very obviously lit... And being obviously lit is not a "good" or "bad" thing, its purely a stylistic choice. Coincidentally, I happen like his obviously lit photos more. It just depends on the look you want IMO. The problem with the above Subaru is that it's not "well" lit by any definition of the word.

Re: Post one random shot *per day*

I just got my ebay purchased K1000!! I need to do a major clean of it tomorrow since it has obviously been stored somewhere for a long time. But an initial look at the camera and lenses appears to be a solid setup.

OG JDM Pentax (Asahi Branded) K1000
Pentac SMC 50 f2.0 (I actually have 2 now)
Super Albinar 28 f2.8
Super Albinar 135 f2.8

For a total of $100 including shipping. Not too fucking shabby. Gonna buy a cleaning kit tomorrow and so select some film to start shooting with.

The shot above was scanned from an 8 year old negative taken with my mom's K1000. I picked up a Canon Canoscan 9000F. Found a local high imaging place that will develop film for $5/roll and then I can cherry pick the negatives and scan them into higher quality images. As long as I can keep the dust away!!

Like the idea with this one... What you need is a little bit of lens/perspective correction tho. With natural lines like the walls and the curb, you need to do it one of two ways... Make them exactly square, or obviously not square. Doing it so it's close but still off is a definite no-no. I might also re-visit the white balance as well but other than that, the shot looks pretty good!

It would make my life easier, I use the grad filter a lot.

I also want to be able to apply lens corrections to layer masks in PS for when I fuck up and don't notice that the CA is intolerable until I'm halfway through painting a mask in.

I actually enjoy the bleed, as if it were a real grad filter in front of the lens...it's a look I just dig...if slightly old school. It's often hard to place properly and find the right level of graduation and stops down.

I spent a good long while farting around with selecting portions of another photo last night and was about to stab myself...and all for results I didn't really like.

What you did is nothing close to an "anti-rig" shot. Just a long shutter motion capture. What Nate did was multiple exposures from a camera mounted to a car, and then stitched together in photoshop.

I don't think that's HDR, but I'd guess some serious curves adjustments.

That, and some saturation/vibrance adjustments.

I can do the shot again. Just need to turn the TV off. It took a few shots trying to get the background blur to frame the image. Very diffuclt with a rebel viewfinder.

The blue to left is a tv, and there is a 40w bulb across the room directly behind the head. Couch on the bottom right. The nifty fifty is great at destroying backgrounds.

Imagine Yellowstone without any interesting geologic activity and only 100 acres. The elk and bison are kept separate though because you're not supposed to get out of your vehicle in the bison enclosure. With the elk, you can get as close as your stupidity allows. FWIW, bison fuck up more visitors to Yellowstone than any other animal.

LNXGUY - awesome composition it is a shame that the light wood of the oar is being detroyed by the sun and shows up as an overexposed highlight.

Some PS folks maybe able to "fix" it but I would just destroy everthing that is good about the shot trying to recover the detail in the oar.

I bet it wouldn't be that bad. Open the raw file once in ACR and get what you've got here, then open it again (while this is open in regular ps) and the second time adjust exposure and anything else needed for just that oar (and you might be surprised how much info is actually there) and then send it on to PS too. Once back in PS, select all of the oar corrected file and paste it in to the original which PS will automatically do as a layer. Add a mask to the top layer and paint in everything but the oar - maybe playing with the opacity of the mask along the edges and near the water.

Essentially, it's HDR minus any of the stupidness (Halos and weird transitions) that normally goes with it.

So, I'm working on the project for work, and need to take some specific scenery photos. Too bad I only have a D50, but we'll make it work.

The shots are all taken at ISO 1600, f/10, and 30s shutter. Oh, and the only thing I did to the photos in photoshop was stitch them and give them just a quick levels adjustment to darken the night sky.

I'm not posting these for quality. Just because I found this cool spot on the side of 95 that's abandoned because the worked the new highway around this section.

It's super noisy at full-res. I had the ISO that high because I needed to shoot at f/10, and ISO 800 was still too dark even at 30s exposure. It was cloudy, no moon, and the road basically had 0 light.
