I just sent the 7d Back to canon today \:\( My remote port on the side of the body doesn't work properly (the remote doesn't "click" into place and when I move the camera (even with the tripod still attached) I have to wiggle the remote plug or re-insert it to get it working again.

Also told them to check out the backfocusing issue while they've got it (since canon claims that Micro-Focus Adjustment should me a "last resort" (though I've accepted it as a neccesary evil at this point)...

Sucks you had to send your camera back. And yes 200 isn't really that close which is why I'm going with the 100-400L for my lust to take pictures of things outside and from far away...

It's a useful range, most definitely.

Meh, at the end of the day its free to me and I get the assurance of knowing I have a camera thats within Canon Spec. I have nothing pressing to shoot at the moment and I'll have it back probably by the beginning of next week.

Try 135mm. ;\) No one ever clicks on my pics to read the Exif...

200mm is plenty... (usable) at 40-50ft using an 18MP sensor if you can focus well. A lot of my shots are from that distance. Put some sunflower seed out and you'll have some new friends and can use a wide angle if you want.

Sorry to hear about the 7D.

Flickr blocks most of the data to the image posted and requires you to view their metadata page if you really want to know how the shot was taken. Just click on the "using a (insert camera)" link.

Ahhhh awesome info Mike, I see a shot I like and try to remember the settings (or similar) the next time I'm out. That's my biggest problem right now, what settings to use when..

I think I need another book.

I don't care how many books you read, if you've read at least one good book then going out and experimenting will help a ton more. Shit I just walk down to the garage and play with settings and walk upstairs and see what happened on the computer. If I see one or two things that worked well/great, I go back downstairs or find something laying around and play with the new setting I found and then adjust other things. The thing I've been working on lately is white balance with the camera and temperature in LR3 and since playing with those I'm going back over some of my older shots and just lol at how I treated post...

I'm trying my hardest to just take more pictures whether good or bad. Hell I took my camera out to KC last week just to walk around at night and take pictures and although some aren't the greatest, what I learned doing that went a long way (and leaving my 55-250 at home so I purposely shoot with my 18-55 and my 50 1.8). After last week I'm way more confident in what I can get away with in low light, both in terms of how to handle the camera without a tripod, how to correct color, and how to use white balance to my favor.

I was going to tell you what kind of bird that is, but read the title of the pic. \:D

1/8sec is an eternity for that lens at 200mm. Try cranking the ISO and shutter speed up when you're back in action. Focusing at that distance is a dice throw so you might want to use live view and zoom in. I've learned to get as close as possible and shoot a few bursts, refocusing each time. I've gotten to where I can do it using the viewfinder now (because I hate live view), but luck is still involved. There's always a twig or something that AF will lock on to even using spot metering.

My main thing isn't birds, I just happen to shoot a ton of them in the backyard when I'm bored. It's good practice.

Thanks for the advice mike! It was super dark and in my mind with that much intricate detail, bumping the iso would have given me shit in the IQ department.

I was tripod mounted but the birds move so much it was a crap shoot anyway. I did shoot in spot metering, in selective point AF, as well as live view at 5x or 10x. I'm starting to really like live view now that I can so easily switch. On stationary objects when tripod mounted (heh cars). Live view + 10x zoom + manual focus ENSURES win.

Shooting birds is kind of fun and challenging, and it's good practice. Anytime you can gain skill in something like that, it's only going to help you in other areas of your shooting (imo)

Here's a working edit on one of my CR-Z photos.

Needs a fair amount of clean up still. The lens distortion is a bit unrealistic, and the rear wheel fitment looks HELLA un-flush LOL The sky is dingy in places, the ground is too dark over all, and there's no one driving the car. Also the side of the car is mad blown out, and at first I thought I liked it but now I want to bring back some detail.

(BTW this is a real rig shot, with the car being lit from several positions and layered in PS. The flare in the window is also real, it's the sun setting.)

Another shot from my trip to KC. If this needs a warning let me know and I'll link it, but it's a statue in a public place so I'm hoping it doesn't.

Eh I'm not saying it ADDS to the image, but it doesn't take away nearly as much as you think. It doesn't interfere much with the true subject of the image, adn your image is incredibly sharp and vivid.

Fuck it \:\)

I would leave it... I think it's cool, to me it looked like a branch of some sort (not a fence) until I read your reply.

I think I've probably posted this before, but it was overworked - I had spent so much time trying to get the contrast right on the various layers that the whole thing had an obnoxiously oversharpened look. I went back to the raw file and tried again with a more restrained hand.

so I had a question about this

I was shooting this through my 70-200/2.8 + 1.4x tc, at f11. they were probably 3-400 feet out from me and at times even farther than that. even at 2.8 the dof is pretty much infinite because i'm well beyond hyperfocal distance @200mm (or 280 effective mm), so was there any reason for me to shoot this anything but wide open? I keep looking back thinking I was wrong to stop down.

The TC probably adds a little softness wide open, but close down a stop to 5.6 or so and you ought to be ok.

figures. shutter speeds at 5.6 + iso800 were in the lower side of the 2000th's, which would have just barely frozen the water at that point. curses

I definitely underestimated how fast small waves travel. freezing people isn't actually that hard
