I realized that my next double digit race is only 8 weeks away. So Friday I went and grinded out 10 miles @ 1:25:06. Goal is to get under 8 min/mile by mid October. I think it's doable with some consistency.

sick! I had a good long run last night after it cooled off/was stumbling in the dark. 8.5m @ 9:30 avg pace [goal pace was 10:00--10:30], first long run I've felt comfortable with in a looooong time. Until last night it has been feeling like I've gotten slower \:\|

got an int tri in 4 weeks, and a half in 5, followed by a swim meet in 6 weeks [signed up for 50m free, 100 IM, and 400m free]

so I really only have 3 more weeks of training, then a nice fat taper hehe. [tapering everything but the swimming which is... already basically tapered year round hehe]

On a sidenote: I seem to be running a lot better now that I just go on 'perceived effort, glance at pace once in a while', vs. looking at the HR monitor all the time. Less is more.

I'm kind of anticipating a blow-up in miles 10-13 or so of my upcoming half. Just figure I'd call it and get that out of the way. [I am hoping to go out around 8:45 pace and see what happens lolol--remember I started jogging in feb of this year and just crossed 300 miles YTD heh]

Nice work man. I believe consistency is far more important than pace; at least the first time out.

Just found out Meb Keflezighi will be running in my pace group for the Las Vegas Half. Stoked!

[I signed up probably optimistically for the 1:55 corral hehe]

Done a little running this week:

Sunday - 9 miles on the treadmill
Tuesday - 8 miles on the treadmill
Today - 5+ outside

This is probably the first week I have had in a while with over 20 miles. I'll do a long run this weekend and then similar mileage next week. I will follow that with a couple of light weeks before marathon training begins in earnest.

Meb is awesome would love to run in that group.

I might just stop training for the run I was going to do and attempt to run that pace.

36 miles on the feet this week and less biking (40m) and one shorter stationary bike.

Going on vacation next week, so no weight and mostly walking. I'm hoping the rest will do me some good since I've been going fairly hard all summer without pretty much any rest days.

So I figured out how to get through the pain. Basically it appears to be a huge knot on the inside of my calf, and if I push on it hard it goes down. Then stretch, then push and then it doesnt hurt. So I ran yesterday 6 miles, biked 10 miles today. Planning on running 5 miles tomorrow. Should be back on track.

I finally had to bring my glorious post-Leadvile age of recovery to an end this week. I mean, I was physically capable of running again the Thursday after the race, but I was enjoying laying around and eating everything in sight a bit too much. Nearly 3 weeks of no activity after 4 years of constant training and racing.

I'm at like 13 miles for the week and I'm pretty sore. \:D

This morning I signed up for my 2nd ultra, because I'm an idiot I guess. Signed up for the Cremator in July in South Carolina. This is a road ultra ran in the heat and pretty flat. I signed up for the double, so it will be 50 miles on Saturday and 50 miles on Sunday (there's even a triple to add 50 on Monday!).

Looking forward to it as I've been wanting to sign up for an ultra lately, but am picky and wanted to do a road ultra, which is the opposite of most of you guys here. But I figure the running in Florida will be good training for this ultra, as opposed to a mountain ultra on trails and 25k ft of elevation lol.

Also currently at week 5 of marathon training, so that's going well and enjoying it, December will be my 2nd marathon, keeping pace with my marathons and ultras I guess lol.

I mean as far as ultras are concerned more people do trails, more races are trails, and the guys here certainly do trail ultras.

I gotta figure out how to train for this double 50 miler as well. I might just do the Relentless Forward Progress for 40mile-100k training one and maybe make the Sunday runs slightly longer or something. Having 10 months to prepare will be good, lol.

Says Mister sub 30 Leadville. I'm not sure if that should make me more or less scared of it. :P At least I'll have an overnight break from running, though that probably only means day 2 I'll fall out of bed and have to crawl 50 miles lol.

For those that run in the sun. What kind of sunblock do you his use? I recently bought some face specific sunblock and I noticed after my run all of it ran down my face and collected on my neck and chest. Looks like I had a fuckin bukaki on me

I've never run using sunblock. I use a sweatband under a hat and sunglasses, along with clothes, lol. But don't put anything on my legs/arms/face at all. Even running through the summer in FL I haven't used anything and never got sunburn.

Got the dreaded email today... Spartan Race postponed due to extreme heat. Can't blame them though. The Spartan Sprint is an entry level race. And it was supposed to be 105* during our wave.

Waiting for new date. Hoping it doesn't overlap another race.

This was the first week of marathon training and I am already slacking.

Was supposed to do intervals on Tuesday. But was traveling and didn't feel like doing the treadmill for intervals. So I just went for a five plus mile run. It was in San Francisco so I partly made up for it by trying to run up a big fucking hill.

Was supposed to run three miles on Thursday but had a pretty full day including Disney on Ice. I didn't feel like running at ten at night and it was only three miles anyway so I blew it off.

Then today was out long run. 10 miles at 8:55/mile. Felt pretty good too except for the last mile or so where it was a good bit warmer than when I had started.

So far so good. I need to keep close tabs on my diet. Not because I want to lose weight but to make sure I am getting enough calories and nutrition to optimize my training. Wouldn't mind losing up to half a pound per week but no more than that.

Took two and a half off on vacation. Feel like shit. Ran 8 miles yesterday quite easily, so that's good. Strength is down a touch because Europe hasn't heard of protein.

Feel bloated as shit tooeven though we tried to eat well and walked forever daily. I'm sure the booze helped.

I was supposed to run 17 today, made it 16.2, just was back at the house and had no motivation to do the last bit. I really gotta figure out my nutrition on these runs longer than a half-marathon. I can't figure out if I take too little water, like today I only took in probably 12oz, heh. But my stomach gets upset with too much it seems. I was good for 10 miles, 10-13 was a little slower but ok, then 13 on was probably half walk and half run.

This is the first run over 14 miles I've done all year, so it is to be expected to not be fun. I usually do long runs with Clif Bloks, which I like, my stomach isn't a real big fan of GU. Unfortunately I don't have one of those iron stomachs that can do whatever. In total today for my run I had a bagel prerun, 5/6th of a Clif Bloks pack and about 12 oz of Propel. So, yeah, that didn't work out. I want to try to eat more, not sure if I should just do a bunch of Clif Bloks or perhaps some real food with it. This is marathon training week 8 of 18 done so have a bit to figure it out.

Personally I wouldn't be messing with anything more than water for runs up to 2.5 hours or so. A decent meal a few hours before, but other than that it's just not needed and probably causes more harm than good. Throw a couple jolly ranchers in your pocket if you want to get a little bit of a sugar boost in the latter miles.

Cheesegoggles: nice job man. Don't beat yourself up over a couple days missed here and there. A 3 mile run in a marathon plan are mostly junk/recovery miles anyways and they won't have a negative impact on your goal.

As for me, I'm feeling pretty good about a slow and steady buildup after my full month off.
22
28
39
and 45 this week. Good mix of trails and road and I feel like I'm getting some speed back too. Goal is to build back up to a 60 mile week for the Bootlegger 50k in Vegas on November 7th and 75 mile week before the North Face 50 miler in SF on December 6th.

After that it'll be Way Too Cool 50k (my third year in a row) in March and Boston in April.
