Finished the New Year's LA Half Marathon last night. Holy crap there were a lot of hills. But managed to squeeze out a PR @ 1:49:46 in 48-50° temps.

#258 in a crowd of ~3,800. Stoked!

I've been doing alot more longer trail running and finding out my handheld water bottle isn't enough and I don't like carrying anything.... what do you guys recommend for a vest.

I like the Nathan vests, I've been using this one for about a year now with no complaints: http://www.rei.com/product/850205/nathan-hpl-020-hydration-vest

Thinking of getting a vest for my longer runs. The running belt and water attachments make me feel like a dork.

And got a dose of reality tonight. Tried a 7x7 with each interval being a half mile @ 7:30 pace. Blew up after 5 of 7. On the plus side, training only requires I keep it under an 8:20 pace. I was able to finish out the last two after a brief walk. Going to try again next week.

Love love love my Ultimate Direction SJ vest. I use these bottles in the front pockets and its perfect. No bouncing unlike the bottles it comes with.
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/Nathan_18_oz_SpeedDraw_Flask/descpage-NA18RF.html

I used it at Leadville for the entire race. Miles 1-40 I didnt use a bladder or bottles up front, I used handhelds and kept all my nutrition and supplies in the pack. I switched to poles for the rest of the race so I threw a bladder in the pack.

Tons of room for a jacket, gloves, body glide, salt tabs, baby wipes etc. All the stuff you need on a long run. \:D

Interval training really is effective tho right? I need to get those back into my schedule. A lot more 'fun' IMO also compared to simply slugging out a given distance at a tempo effort (shudders)

But I guess it all depends what you are trying to accomplish

I do enjoy the different workouts. My training usually consists of the following:

Mon - 5-6 mile interval or fartlek
Weds - 5-7 mile progression or tempo
Fri - 3-5 mile recovery run
Sat - long run

Fridays occasionally work in a longer distance for those dreaded back-to-back fatigued runs. And beginning in February, mid week mileage will add an extra 1-2 miles per session.

I really like the interval training. It is nice to break a run up into segments at times. And it definitely helped improve my speed.

On vacation, so kayaking, snorkeling, water polo and beach volleyball.

Probably still not enough to offset the booze even while eating decent.

16.4m YTD on my feet :flexes:

something is always bothering me a bit when I run lately, like just now my left top-of-the-kneecap barked at me and hurt a bit in the first mile or 2 of my epic 5-mile trot

going to substitue intervals for my long run this weekend also :nailedit:

I think the earlier posted 8x800m @ 7:30 pace would be good for me to shoot for. I'm sure I'll blow up somewhere in the middle \:D

I had the same issue and it was the IT band, as you know. Cold weather makes it much, much worse. Foam roller, stretching and cushioned shoes seem to be a huge help.

I'd say if you're having some aches it might not be the time to start pushing too hard. Or maybe do at least a day of rest between each run.

Is this the same recurring ache you've been talking about? Might be time to ease back a couple weeks and let that sucker heal.

Ha!

It is in the same spot, but it hasn't been an issue for months now. It's probably just a little overuse nagging. Got a 50k out at Calico ghost town in 2 weeks...should be good by then.

Walt Disney World Marathon today. Finished in just under 4:40. Although that was for 26.6 due to a lot of running around people early on. Weather was pretty decent. Had a shot at DJ. 4:30 through 20 and then the wheels fell off.

My wife smoked me (again) and finished in 4:17. We ran together for 17 miles and then I told her to drop me because I knew I was holding her back.

No more fulls for me. Just not cut out to do it well and it sucks all the fun out of running.

Now off to Epcot to eat and drink beer.

My Garmin recorded 26.6. I could see it building up with each mile marker. My 1 mile split beeped just a few seconds prior to the 1 mile marker and the gap got bigger every mile.

Also I am pretty sure I read that a marathon course is required to measure 26.2 through the shortest line meaning you have to take perfect lines and hit the inside of every turn. There were a lot of turns on this course and that was not possible with the people around.

Yeah, but a GPS watch isn't as accurate as the course measurement tools either so you've got several types of 'errors' that may be compounding or balancing one another out.

In any event, congrats again! Any plans to work on half marathons in the future then?

Yes. Half PR is about 1:57 and I am confident I can bring that down. I will never be fast but under 1:50 is definitely doable.

Whoa... congrats to our marathoners!

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and post the log from my beer mile yesterday: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/671338005

Conditions were ~42F and sunny - perfect. I drank Shotgun Betty by Lone Rider. First beer went down in ~10 seconds and I was feeling good. Got halfway around before the next person left - a really hot and nice female triathlete somebody knew. Second beer... uh oh. This doesn't taste so good. Still left first. Third beer... oh geez... I don't want to do this anymore.

Finally got around and had the fourth beer. Hot tri lady was right on my tail and was drinking fast. After about 50 yards, I had to stop so as to not puke, and she passed me. I recovered and decided there was no choice but to go for it and I started sprinting. I was a quarter length behind her and knew I couldn't catch her but I was hoping to push her into puking. In a spectacular backfire, I pulled onto the grass about 50 yards short of the finish, and about 2 liters of beer foam came chundering out of my mouth. Everyone said I looked like one of those foaming soap dispensers. So I had to take a penalty lap, and I finished just after the second place guy. Ended up third out of a field of 6.

Fun thing to do with your friends if you have a track to use.

Congrats on the marathon finish Ludite! As far as the distance, showing 26.6 isn't bad at all. My last one showed over 27, that was rough!

I know some people doing the half and full this weekend, I hear the Disney races are really good!

I'm not sure if you're asking about what type of nutrition is required to avoid the wall... which sometimes isn't related to nutrition leading up to or during the race itself.

As Chris previously pointed out, and as I'm learning this time around, it has more to do with teaching the body how to run and burn energy while exhausted. A few back-to-back longer runs will teach the body to burn fat vs. depleting glycogen on the longer runs. I believe typical glycogen storage is only good for 16-20 miles, hence the wall faced by many of us.

So for long runs of more than ten miles my plan was usually breakfast 90 to 120 minutes prior to getting started. That was typically a bagel, fruit and coffee.

During my training runs this year I was eating Clif Blox. I decided I did not want to do gels because I wasn't crazy about them after about the first couple. But the Blox didnt treat me much better. I took them about every 45 minutes. And I still would start dragging after 15 or 16 miles.

Nutrition may have contributed but for me the other problem was shit just hurt. Knees hurt. Ankles hurt. Pretty sure I have a hernia and that hurt too. And as the runs got longer these things would remain sore long enough to interfere with the next run. So I can't say that better or different nutrition would have mattered.

For the actual marathon I had a bagel and a clif bar before the run. Coffee as well. I took two Clif bars with me with the plan to eat half of one at about 5,10,15 and 20 miles. I also knew that bananas would be provided in two locations. There was also water and Powerade almost every mile. But in the end my inability to do all the training as well as discomfort were the primary culprits.

My body just can't tolerate the volume required to train appropriately for 26.2.

Nothing wrong with sticking to shorter races.

Lots of people just can't handle big mileage. I'm the only person in my family that's been able to continually train for marathon and greater distances without having issues. My dad and two brothers are all great athletes, but lots of running just beats them up.

Edit: and I agree with Kent...the wall has little to do with nutrition, at least on the physical level. Low energy may effect you mentally (and running a strong 26.2 is definitely staying mentally sharp and focusing on the task at hand) but if you've put in the proper training, your body should be able to perform without pumping a bunch of calories into it while running.

I take in minimal calories during training because I don't want to rely on it during races. I also do the occasional depletion run, basically bonking on purpose. I don't know if it works but I did a 22 mile race on sunday with only 2 gels and although it sucked for other reasons, I think it was plenty of calories.

Interdasting, thanks. I'm eyeing the Morgan hill marathon in oct or a half iron around the same time and am curious about newb/less professional experiences mainly (no offense to the last 2 posters) as I'm guessing my experience will be identical to cheese goggles \:D (assuming I can even finish )

In fact based on the abundant similarity between our runs I'd say my game plan would be just to go out and slam into that wall and own it at mile 17 heh and run/walk/cry from there until the pain finally stops lol
