That's probably why your arm broke like a twig. There's a reason the gym teachers don't let the men do it, they're the experts. Stay safe. My arm broke before pullups and way before I became the mini-giant I am today.

Back in the olden days I could do a straight arm one arm pullup. That shit is HARD.
legit one arm or one handed? I can do 1 handed pullups no problem (off hand gripping on hand wrist). One armed, i.e. off hand dangling at side or on chest, nope. http://www.beastskills.com/one-arm-chin-up-pull-up/I used to do them with towels, but could never get a legit one armed pullup. Anyone can do a one handed pullup. The hardest part of one arm is the initial bend from straight. That is extremely hard. srsly? I was in the ~24-30 range for chinups a looong time ago and was never even close to a 1-armed chinup [free arm just dangling/flailing for balance and touching nothing] I always figured you'd need to be around 40-70 range [normal 2 arm] to be able to pull one off /no idea I was in the 50 range at the time. It's not like you hit a # and then can do it, you have to train for it specifically. I could do one with a slight bend for the longest time, it's the initial bump that's the bitch.

Was never able to do a one arm pull up, but used to bang out 20-30 pull ups in my prime. Now I just do a few sets of 8-10 reps and that's it, not sure what my max is, probably not much higher.
What's the deal with chin ups vs. pull ups? Pulls up are noticeably easier imo.

A lot of people tend to over inflate their numbers for pull ups because they see themselves doing them at shoulder width grip.

Chin-ups, as mentioned, are usually for women because they're easier.

Wait, a pull-up has to have your hands a certain distance apart?
I believe so, you're arms should be in a semi V form, not just staring hanging shoulder width apart. Shoulder width apart is good for chin-ups.
I can probably do about 15 chin-ups and 5 pull ups I'd say.

Growing up we had "Presidential Physical Fitness" tests every year in gym glass. The women usually had to do the static hang rather than chin ups. Some people could hang there forever. It was nuts.

A true pull-up will be arms just outside your shoulder width.
Then you have wide arm pull-ups.

There are a million types of pullups. The standard is usually shoulder width, but there are also close grip, wide grip, behind the neck, one arm, towel, etc.

You mean the one where you go from a pull up and push yourself up to where the bar is level with your waist, and then back down? Yeah, that shit looks impossible.

Yeah, it was pretty impressive. He'd jump up and hang, do a pull up, then proceed to pull himself above the bar (It was a universal cable rack) do some dips, then come back down, hang and repeat...

I've gone wide of late. It is harder than shoulder width-ish. But a pull-up is a pull-up right? No drill instructor is yelling at a new recruit to "get those hands 22.3 inches apart, maggot!"
Perhaps for the military it is. Different grips impact the lift, see bench press.

I'll give it a shot on Friday at the gym.
That's what I think I can do, so we'll see. I have still been lifting all year, since January, 4x per week. I think I've missed maybe 4 weeks all year?

That's super. Have you actually been doing pullups?
If no, you will be sub-10. Bank it.

Wait, a pull-up has to have your hands a certain distance apart? Shoulder width is the basic pull up that most people can do unless you are severely out of shape. The wider your grip the harder the pull up.
So how are people over-estimating based on that. OP didn't ask how many wide arm pullups we could do. Ask a million people to do a pull-up and 99% of them are going to go with whatever feels natural, which Id imagine is somewhere around shoulder width.

Yes, as far as I'm concerned.
The wider the more the muscle group changes.
