How many pull-ups and/or chin-ups can you do?

If you don't know...then guess.

Please identify which it is you're talking about.

This is NOT a pull-up, it is a chin-up.

Pull-up:

Re: How many pull-ups and/or chin-ups can you do?

not as many as I used to be able to. 5 or 6 strict. Combination of extra weight and lack of working out does not add up to lots of pullups. At peak I could do in the low 20's with the last few being a little sketchy with body swing or neck stretching.

I did 10, 8, 8, 5, 3, 3 the other day. I could do more in the past, currently getting back into the groove.

That's legit too. No swinging around. All lats son.

I don't do chinups.

that's how I tore the labrum in my left shoulder. Was being stupid and doing them past my fatigue level, got half way up and lost stability in my shoulder. It was bad enough to need rehab but not bad enough for surgery. But now I have a dead spot in my range of motion, about 3 inches of travel from about my chin to my nose. Makes heavy strict shoulder presses difficult.

Maybe 5? I do 3-5 off my hang-board occasionally.
I was working on getting above 12 a while back, but I find if I don't do it regularly I'm no good. I could do 5 with 45lbs of added weight a while ago, but I always fatigue on quantity on pull ups.

Probably 15 chins though. SO much easier. I used to excel at flexed arm hang when I was a skinny fuck too. Just find that whole angle so much easier (shit lats IDK?)

In the Marines, 20 pullups of chinups is perefect on the fitness test. Not too many people can hit 20.

They are serious about "dead hang" pull ups too. Your elbows need lock out on each rep. None of that fake crossfit shit is allowed. It's funny to see when guys are doing it wrong and the guy counting reps is like, "1, 1, 1, 1.. anytime you wanna start doing pullups... ok, 2,2,3,4" \:D

srsly? I was in the ~24-30 range for chinups a looong time ago and was never even close to a 1-armed chinup [free arm just dangling/flailing for balance and touching nothing]

I used to do them with towels, but could never get a legit one armed pullup.

Anyone can do a one handed pullup. The hardest part of one arm is the initial bend from straight. That is extremely hard.

srsly? I was in the ~24-30 range for chinups a looong time ago and was never even close to a 1-armed chinup [free arm just dangling/flailing for balance and touching nothing]

I always figured you'd need to be around 40-70 range [normal 2 arm] to be able to pull one off /no idea
I was in the 50 range at the time. It's not like you hit a # and then can do it, you have to train for it specifically. I could do one with a slight bend for the longest time, it's the initial bump that's the bitch.

Re: How many pull-ups and/or chin-ups can you do?

Was never able to do a one arm pull up, but used to bang out 20-30 pull ups in my prime. Now I just do a few sets of 8-10 reps and that's it, not sure what my max is, probably not much higher.

What's the deal with chin ups vs. pull ups? Pulls up are noticeably easier imo.

A lot of people tend to over inflate their numbers for pull ups because they see themselves doing them at shoulder width grip.

I believe so, you're arms should be in a semi V form, not just staring hanging shoulder width apart. Shoulder width apart is good for chin-ups.

I can probably do about 15 chin-ups and 5 pull ups I'd say.

Growing up we had "Presidential Physical Fitness" tests every year in gym glass. The women usually had to do the static hang rather than chin ups. Some people could hang there forever. It was nuts.

A true pull-up will be arms just outside your shoulder width.

Then you have wide arm pull-ups.

There are a million types of pullups. The standard is usually shoulder width, but there are also close grip, wide grip, behind the neck, one arm, towel, etc.

Shoulder width is the basic pull up that most people can do unless you are severely out of shape. The wider your grip the harder the pull up.

So how are people over-estimating based on that. OP didn't ask how many wide arm pullups we could do. Ask a million people to do a pull-up and 99% of them are going to go with whatever feels natural, which Id imagine is somewhere around shoulder width.
