You need to get a good understanding of your focus system. Find something that will focus continually, even while you're shooting a burst off. Don't focus, recompose, shoot, focus, recompose shoot. Look at a mode that will track what it thinks is the active subject of focus, or a mode that will let you define the starting point of focus and then track that, or just select the point and just keep focusing while you're shooting. I use back button focus, which is a separate button that I hold down while shooting. The shutter release no longer has anything to do with focusing. I press the AF button, hold it down, the camera continually focuses. I press the shutter release and I'm still focusing. When I press the shutter release it'll activate whether there is positive focus achieved or not. I haven't any idea whether your body would support it, I doubt it'd support back button focus, but you should have some continuous focus mode that can help. It's only going to get more important when you shoot at wider apertures.

You'll have to just dedicate a weekend to trying different modes on the trail without the expectation of bringing anything home that's a keeper. Just test test test and see what works best for you.

When I had my canon I'd use AF Servo. (I think duc shoots canon?) center focus point, fast shutter, continuous shooting, and just click off 10 or so shots as the subject moved through the frame. Of course I was also shooting fast stuff... I mean, if it worked with jets and bikes, should work with jeeps.. Just pick the one that was in focus..

cool thanks. I will try that this weekend. I had set up an invite only wheeling event for 10-12 highly capable crawling rigs for Saturday and sunday that I will be shooting for my website and magazine. I will try the af servo setting

Yup, combine AF Servo, high speed continuous shooting, single center point with back button focusing is the ticket for action shots.

Although, those trucks aren't moving fast crawling giant rocks, he really shouldn't even need that.

That's what I use for BIF.

That's what I use for BIF.
It's relative, sort of. The crawling is slow but there are sudden jerky/fast movements, popping over rocks, slipping sideways, whatever.

Be careful with just trying it out this weekend Duc, it's rough while you're getting dialed in still but it also sucks missing a shot because you're figuring something out still

Another from Tahiti, this time off Bora Bora. These guys would line up their canoes at the tender launch and paddle like hell when the boat took off so they could ride the wake all the way out to the ship.

Thanks Nate. Got a few tips from a guy who's a hardcore birder. Let's just say Manual mode is definitely where I need to spend a lot more time. I got another decent shot of the owl trying to balance itself on top of a tree.
