i loved, loved, loved this car forever.. until i drove one
too heavy, too soft, too slow. even with the getrag 6spd.
if you want a tank, though, then get it because that's what these are
and as everyone else has said.. not at 9k
though it looks like the DIC has all the pixels... so there's that

OK you guys forced to me sign in and have my pass sent to me.
I have a 98 540 (pre vanos) They aren't nimble cars for sure - coming from my EK SiR is felt like a pig. If you have a driveway that you care about don't buy it - cuz it will leak oil from various sources - VCs especially.
The 6 speed shifter is what really disapointed me - there is no snick snick feel, You can upgrade but it's close to 500. Change the tranny fluid because BMW put "lifetime" fluid in there.
Clutch Delay Valve is a POS and not even sure why they install it but if it has that then delete it.
Gearing is long so it feels a bit slow off the stop.
With all that said the car is incredible on the HWY, I haven't driven the competition to this but I can say that it just sails (provided the suspension is in good shape)
DSP stereo sounds good too.
Coming from a Jap car to this though the maintenance requires more time (Valley Pan Job sucked) and patience.
The V8 has enough power to keep you humble - unlike the Honda this will eject your coffee from a shitty cup holder (provided they aren't busted)with ease.
For the right price I don't think you can find a better performance/luxury sedan. - 9K is smoking meth price on that car -
It's a car for the enthusiast as many people agree that this is the best one BMW built as it's the lightest.
And if you drive an e39 M5 and compare to this you will be disapointed.

I never understood why people complain about weight of a car knowing they are going into a luxobarge boat. Hi guys, I drove a F350 dually and I am very disappointed it didn't handle as good as my Lotus Exige!!!!1onebbq It was such a POS, poor handling track pick up truck, will never buy, no feelz, garbage. It's the typical 4age car review (somewhat irrelevant in a sense XD).
Compared the e39 to an E class of that era, a TL, an A6 and then tell me it's a pig. For the time it was in production it did a solid job hiding its weight relative to other cars of similar size and it's a blast to drive. The only thing that sucks on it is that shifter, which is an easy fix, and some quality/fit and finish issues. Otherwise, they are solid cars.
Obviously compared to current luxo barges like the S4 (which is also a pig), the 540 falls flat on its face, but the potential is there and tech has come a long way and OEMs have done a better job increasing feelz (debatable, stfu, i don't care wow electric steering, drive by wire, yada yada) and downplaying the weight of the car.

^^^ its just a surprise if you havent experienced it in a sedan before.
I can understand. Now going forward he likely wont be as surprised in something else. There is only so much you can do to "hide" the weight. once things get twisty you can still feel it, even in things like a gtr.
I agree, weight is daunting especially for spirited driving and it is hard to hide especially to the da ultra feel nerds, but it's a fucking luxury sedan, wtf do people expect, a miata? FOr fuck's sake, such a pet peeve when wallies review irrelevant shit, at least compare the weight to cars in its class.
disclaimer: rant not aimed at anyone here, just venting.

hahahaha
i was half trolling but half serious
i just expected the car to be more sporty than it was, that's all.
obviously in 97 when the car came out it was world class, i wouldn't argue that.
the one i drove felt soft, what can i say. and yes that is comparing to the class.. not to an exige !!o11!11!bbq
i would say as a random example that the 07-era TL feels tighter/more sporty
which i just didnt expect to be the case
