We call it the "Anti-Rig shot." Here's an example (not the one I'm doing in that other photo but the same concept) The June cover was the first time I tried it, I learned a few things but overall I am happy with it. So you guys are correct, it is done "car to car." Basically you do it like this: shoot the subject car, jack it up and spin the front and back wheels, and then pull the subject car out of frame and allow the "camera" car to roll slowly to create the blurred background. Composite later much like you would with any "still" photo. Might sound like a pain in the ass, but it is. Wait... Srsly tho it's not too bad, it generally takes the same amount of time as a normal boom arm rig shot, the benefits of this method are that you can use any length lens you feel like and are not limited by the physical length and inherent instability of your boom arms. I'm guessing you're being Doug's bitch? Anyone wanna guess WTF I'm doing? Nate Only on weekends Nate
I'm confused...

It's basically like how we did the RX-7... Except, the other way around. The camera is attached to another car instead of the boom arms. That way, I can have it further away. Light the subject car, shoot just like it was a still photo. The blur part is accomplished as the last part of the shot by first physically removing the subject car form the photo entirely (aka drive it off to the side) so your frame is just background. Then you move the "camera" car with the camera position remaining fixed. That gives you a nice blurred background plate to drop the body of the subject car onto to finish it up.

Scott, Nice Snowy Egret. How did you get close enough for this picture. Every time I get close to an Egret and raise my lens they fly off.

I really like the soft and clean background of your butterfly picture.
Here is mine but I couldn't capture this thing on a single flower...so no "clean" background

nate, would a slider on a heavy duty tripod work the same way? (or a dolly with tracks?)
you can make them pretty long up to 100" on a slider with 2 or 3 tripods supporting, or on a dolly really long. (if your going the same direction as teh track, youll need some sort of riser to raise the camera a bit so the track doesnt get in the shot.)
Seems like easier setup and execution than on a truck, but thats just me

In theory yes, that would work the same way. There's a few reasons I won't be trying it tho. First being, I already have the rig setup and money is tight... Second, it takes about 3-5 minutes to set up the rig, and can be done by one person. It's actually very easy and low tech. Also, a rig on the hood of a car/truck is far less intrusive and attention grabbing when you don't have a location permit than a 30'-40' dolly... You need to have the ability to move the camera a long way if the shot requires it, so the setup you have pictured would not suffice.
The dolly is just overkill basically. Generally speaking, a stock suspension car moving slowly along reasonably even pavement will be smooth enough (especially considering the whole point of the shot is "blur") for the kind of shot I'm going for. However, there are situations where you can't fit a camera car... i.e if you want the camera hanging off a cliff over a gaurd rail etc... Like most anything photo related, it's not an exact science, lots of it is up to interpretation and personal taste, as well as circumstantial shit that you can't always control and instead have to just deal with and make what you can from what you've got lol. And at the end of the day, you only do shots like this if the car is moving in a straight line. Anything with a curve and suddenly you're into vector blur and post processing to get the look... Which is a whole other story

Scott now that you mention it maybe it was the shutter that chased away the birds.
I got the 14-24 today and the weather is predicted to be nice tomorrow. I will have to go to the park.

I'd rather give up birds than the D700's shutter sound. /fanboi

Is it wrong to be distracted at work by the thought of running around in a park at lunch time with the 14-24?

not at all. i've been doing the walkabout at lunch for the past few weeks every day with my camera. Thinking about it is what gets me through the morning.
sucks that it's raining today

This might be a D-bag move but I am pretty sure that the May photo contest is dead. So I will post my entry. I can be removed from the contest but I am pretty proud of this picture so I want to share it.
Here is the link to the setup shot:

i gotta figure out how to get better scans. such a pain in the ass. that frame looks great on a light table under a loupe, but scanned it looks really soft.
and that makes me soft...
...in my pants...
...as in not erect.
and that's not good.
