I explained that math to her recently. She wasn't impressed. One of my old skate buddies (who was also a cyclist) once told me to explain to her that as men we NEED these toys in our lives. Solid theory, IMHO.

One of my better results lately.

About 1-2 minutes faster than I hoped I'd be. A couple little hills on this route. (Still trying to average 20mph over flat ground), intersections and lights really mess with that goal for me. I think I can go a bit quicker when I race this next weekend assuming they traffic control these intersections and still have a decent 5k jog after (for me, heh so not fast). Winds are 15-20mph and gusty on this route so glad I got used to it. I did three laps here yesterday to practice. The first lap I got lost and was heading towards Livermore before I noticed heh.

if there are any good roads in those mountains you should ride the shit out of them to help with power. it'll make hitting 20 on the flats that much easier than just riding flats primarily

Took off today to explore a new route, and what will probably be my last road ride on this bike before I pack it up and ship it to Washington for the Seattle to Portland ride on July 12th. My quads started feeling a bit irritated and my hamstrings were making their presence known. WTF?! I stopped for a snack and took a picture of my bike (like always) and noticed the saddle setback didn't look right. After a closer look, my saddle had slid back a little more than an inch! Huge difference in fit. I'm guessing all the gravel rides lately loosened the seatpost bolts. Moved it back to where it was supposed to be and the quad/hammy pain went away!

MS150 from this past weekend:

Century wasn't nearly as fast as I wanted it to be (I had hopes for 16.2mph average). I don't know how you guys go deep into the 5 hour range. Mostly flat course with some rollers. The climbing was on day 2. Weather was perfect--dry and mid-70's, so it made it 100x more enjoyable than the misery that was last year.

Did a 20 mile hero/hair of the dog/recovery ride today. \:\)

BTW--Since they were so great this weekend, I'll never ride another long ride on 700x23's. The 25's were so much more plush that I was WAY less beaten-up both days. \:\)

what PSI do you run your 23s at? the 25s? I ask also because we're around the same weight... I shoot for like ~105 on the 23s and like 85 on 25s which I'm sure is completely backwards or something [feels about right though]

oh and GREAT job... that Nigeria to Tanzania route looks nuts. Did anybody jack your bike going through the Congo? ;\)

LOL--the latest update to mapmyride is pretty wonky in terms of logging workouts. Thus the globe view.

As for tires, I run the same pressures in both sizes: 105r/100f because pinchflats. (I'm down to 180, but I'll pinchflat anything) The 25s are still super cushy at that pressure.

Today, I skipped they bike and went to a steak fry instead (legs are way overtrained right now, so I honestly needed the break). Will ride tomorrow and TT on Tuesday.

Decent TT tonight. Somewhere in the 36 minute range (we'll see the official results later in the week) and averaged 19.4mph for the 12.1 miles. I climbed the strongest to date, so that's cool. Descending was so-so, but it was pretty damn windy tonight (tropical storm heading this way)

That said, got chicked pretty hard. Both were tri-chicks, one was sponsored by the Colavita Fine Foods women's cycling team. There were a couple of brutally fast dudes, too--one set a new PR for the course in the 27 minute mark, which is insane. Usually, FTD is in the 30 flat range.

My quads were pretty vascular right after the finish, so I was stoked with that (out of vanity).

Here are my splits (couldn't fit them in one shot):

Mapmyride isn't all that good with elevation. It's near a reservoir, so what goes up, comes down. Looks a net elevation gain of 300 feet. The biggest climb is a 3-tiered bitch of a climb that takes about 10 minutes total to tackle. The last kicker is murder. After being completely wrung out, there's a short, slight recovery climb and then a bunch of descents. Odd course for a TT, but it does the trick.

Seattle to Portland ride coming up in a few days. I'm training hard...sitting in my recliner drinking beer. Flying to AZ tomorrow, then to WA on Thursday, then start the Seattle to Portland ride on Saturday. I have 2 centuries in the bag already this year, and have been averaging ~50 miles a week. I'll be fine \:\) The plan is to cruise on Saturday, and make it to the Centralia midway point, have dinner, enjoy the beer garden, and hit the sack early. Enjoy the pancake breakfast at 4am, then hit the road hard at daybreak to get to Portland before lunch. Should be a good time!

Awesome little interview with the tour divide winner

Absolutely mind blowing covering that much distance in such a short time, could never imagine doing such a thing.

TDF has what? 3x as much elevation? Aka around 65k feet, 500 fewer miles over 5 more days. Sounds like TDF is harder but what do I know

TDF is a road race with support vehicles. Tour divide is OFF ROAD and a self supported race, they sleep under the stars and don't have mechanics and chefs catering to them, they also carry everything they need, they're not riding 13lb skinny tire bikes.

I get that, also I think its a lot easier to do a pure zone 1 low effort all day long than the sprints/climbs and fights to stay in the pack in the TDF while competing with the fastest people in the world over a similar distance and much harder climbs. I think these 'ultra' people are a crazy bunch but they bend themselves backwards to compete in alternate forms of extreme suffering.

Tour divide is far from zone 1 low effort! There's bears and snakes and all sorts of beasties out to eat you, which are fun to encounter when you've been riding for 15 hours straight on a 45lb loaded bike through the unpaved mountain trails. Way harder than tdf!

Also you're riding all alone with no peloton to draft or split the work with. Riding solo day after day for that many hours would just destroy you mentally.

I think it's considerably easier to ride for 20 hours/day at 8.5 mph than 5 hours @25 mph [w/3x vert]

but we can agree to disagree

I'll definitely agree to disagree with that one. 20 hours of anything will shut down most people.

...and those TdF bikes are 15 lbs, BTW. ;\)
