When I got to the first one, they were giving out those super tiny paper cups that hold maybe 1/3 cup of water. I figured fine I'll deal, when I took a sip it was 90% crushed ice. Since then I always bring a minimum amount of my own water just incase.

That's my fear. A bottle of water and some ice in my camelbak won't slow me down and I can sip when I want.

Anyway, 6 month total:

Mostly bike. Some running.

I don't log everything with the same app (especially cycling), but ran just over 100 miles in June.

Cycling, I'd estimate 150 miles or so. I typically run 3-4 times per week and cycle 1-2 times (plus one stationary cycle).

Weights 3x/week.

You are 3 miles short of my total distance ran for all of 2013. =[ Lol.

Everybody in here has put in some serious mileage, that's awesome.

Aside from "HTFU" and "don't", what is the proper etiquette for taking a walk break in a crowded 10k? Get to the right?

just go out on a comfortable pace. no walking! you're in way too good of biking shape to have to walk a 10k [unless you go out too fast\]

Most races are only crowded at:
the start (oh god, don't be in the front 10%)
The stations(you've got a plan)
the end a little(I've never understood this "hump)

You might encounter one or two other "bulges", but most races I've been on haven't been ridiculous after the first mile.

I plan on starting near the end of things. No business being up front.

stickaz--my cycling conditioning doesn't have much bearing on my running. The cardio is nothing, but the impact still wrecks me. Plus, I can coast on a bike. Hopefully the adrenaline of it all keeps me moving.

Thanks for the input. Race is at 6:30 tonight, assuming thunderstorms don't cancel it.

Probably not as fun as that, its fire road with about 2k of vert over a 4 mile climb.

That 10k turned out to be a blast. So glad I did it.

I ran a 1:01:46 with a 5k of 28:06, which is the fastest 5k I've ever put down, so I'm stoked about that. 9:57 pace, so I'm sub-10 minute. Still dog slow by real runners' standards, but I'm happy about it. I don't know how I placed. Says 741st, 111 in my division (M40-49), but I don't know the exact number of people in the 10k.

Others in my little crew ranged from 45-50 minutes. The dude who did 45 has done a 36 minute 10k in more heavily-trained days.

The Camelbak saved my ass. It was 90 and Amazon-humid at start time. Just brutal. Apparently, a few people got overcome during the damn 5k. Plenty of water stops, but they wouldn't have done enough for me. I walked a few times, but I didn't walk until the 5k mark (thus the PR).

Of interest--Dick and Rick Hoyt ran this event (along with a bunch of others on "Team Hoyt"). I finished about 20 seconds before he did. Bad motherfucker, he is.

They announced names as we crossed the line, so having my name announced at Gillette stadium was pretty badass. Overall, a VERY well-run event for so many runners (6500 between the separate 5k and the 10k).

I'm pretty psyched I did it. Again, nothing super impressive, but it's another life experience. 178 miles of MS150 on 6/21-22 and now this.

Good job. Anytime people worry about times, just think of how many people could finish a 10k.

I'm running 10k today, throwing in stairs (likely around 1500) and hills. I hope I'm not overdoing it, but this will be tough. Hot day too.

Did a few miles at night on the trail I have been running and it just looked liked someone had thrown glitter all over it. Hundreds of spider, lizard, and insect eyes reflecting is all I could see.

Creepy.

Where I run, must be something odd, but there are all these worms hanging down from the trees by some type of silk. I'm ruining and dodging them looking like a Vietnam vet having flashbacks. Still end up with 3-4 green worms stuck to me somewhere.

The heat here blows, upper 80's and 50%+ humidity at 5am should be a crime. I keep telling myself it's good training, right? Right????
Heart rate in the upper 180's at an 8:30 pace can die.

I feel ya with the heat. Ran 10 miles today at a 9:40 or so pace, which is a solid minute+ slower than I'd be doing this when its cool. Did it 9am-10:30am and it was about 90 degrees here in FL. The heat really slows me down, but want to try to hit 100 miles this month so gotta get out there and just try not to die lol.

I'm running in Sacramento right now and it's just about 100 degrees. Did 6 in the am when it was a little cooler, but I just did another 6 at 8 and it was still hot as hell. Pretty nice besides that though...beautiful sunset along the river levee.

It rained today so the night trail run I was going to do turned into a pavement out and back 10k.

53:30 give or take a few seconds. Started at 830pm an when I left about 1030pm it was 82 and 65% humidity Next race is in 4 weeks and my goal is to finish in about the same time but on the trails.

Doing a 5k fun run in the morning with the gf. Can't wait to see how my legs feel with less than 12 hours of rest.

5k went about how I expected. Finished just under 30 minutes. Was not trying to race it or anything but I felt drained at the end and doubt I could have gone much faster if I had tried.

Back to the trails this week to try and get ready for the next race.

How fast do you figure you could run a 5k? The only time I ran one, I was almost 50lbs heavier and just wanted to finish. Now, it seems like such a tough distance to pace.

Last 5k race I did was 2 years ago and I ran a 23:09. Honestly no clue how I would do on fresh legs but I am thinking my old time would probably be about my limit if the weather was cool enough. I am not consistent enough to have improved in the last two years.

I was always told for a 5k go out at what feels like a stupid fast pace and just try and hold it as best you can for the last mile. I doubt that is the correct way to do it.
