Did they not let you know that they were publishing your picture?

That is really cool though, congrats!

They did, just not which specific ones, or what size they'd be etc.. They used 4 of mine throughout the article.

It was handheld with the 135. What looks weird to you about it?

It just doesn't have the same clarity throughout the shot like some of your others (namely the water and grass in the foreground), making me believe it was either windy or a handheld shot. It's an awesome shot, I love it, I just felt something was up.

Gotcha. Just looked, f11 1/25. That's kind of a long shutter. I have noticed that i am missing focus a lot more with the mark ii than the old d90

That was using a non macro lens. I used my voigtlander 35/1.7...coupled with the hawks adapter, it gets the MFD fairly close. Then I tacked on a couple magnifying filters (+4 and +2). The voigtlander is crazy sharp and I was happy to see the sharpness come thru even with 2 filters on the lens.

Nice.

As a side note, i tried to shoot motorcycles at the track last night with the 135f2, you want a decently slow shutter to get background blur and wheel motion. At f2, 1/125 iso100 and -2 exposure compensation, it was still way blown out. Even at dusk. I'm not sure if f2 is usable which makes me sad.

Tips?

Shoot at like F4-F5.6 then... why do you want to be at f2?

Nice. I was out in Yakima for work Friday and took the long way home on Hwy 12 which gets a pretty good shot at Rainier. Only had my potato, but it was pretty impressive. Where did you shoot from?

You won't see it because of the motion blur from panning. ;\) Try to give your shutter speed priority for action shooting. If you're panning side to side, get some shutter drag so you have blur. The speed you'll want to shot at will vary depending on how fast the bikes are going, and what kind of look you want from your images. It's 100% subjective. If the bikes are riding directly or almost directly towards you though, shoot with a faster speed so they don't become out of focus as you shoot. That happens because they are moving out of the focus plane while the shutter is open, so you gotta freeze them in place.

Basically it boils down to this: Side to side, pan with shutter drag for blur. Straight forward or away from you, FREEZE the action. All the physics of depth of field apply to moving subjects, so keep that in mind. They will float in and out of the focus plane depending on how fast they are moving and how fast you are panning.

Here's two quick examples from Long Beach.

Panning with motion blur:

Meta:
1DS Mark III
50mm f1.4 USM
f11
1/60th
ISO 200

Also, notice the car is still only in focus in a small area. That's because of the trajectory the car is traveling in relationship to the focus plane throughout the length of the exposure. And also how fast and at which angle you pan. And other maths. Basically shoot a fuck load and about 2-5% will be usable.

Freezing action is much easier:

Meta:
1DS Mark III
70-200mm f2.8 L IS II w/1.4x extender
f4.5
1/1000th
ISO 800

Fast shutter speed = frozen. That's all you need to know.

Yeah. after reading that i realized the error in my ways. Which is funny cause I've got a decent collection of track pics, but it's always been at f5.6 or slower. I got so excited about f2, i forgot the basics.
