Are you using servo focus for those action shots or just focus and wait? I have never trusted the AF to keep track of a moving subject with the cheaper bodies, and never tried servo mode on 5D2.

that was with the D90. slow the shutter, rapid fire as they blow by and hope you get a good one, lol. usually just leave it on the center focus point with regular AF, and try and track it. the throwaway rate is high until you get the hang of it.

hopefully the 5dii and the 400 5.6 will yeild similar results this year.

I was never comfortable panning on a monopod. It's actually very awkward to get a smooth motion in the horizontal plane without tilting the horizon.

I much prefer to hand-hold for those shots.

Cool. I never do any panning, guess I should get out and practice. I had a D90 for a year and it was a love / hate relationship. Wish there are some features from it on the canons I have now. Still Have a D200 and manual lenses, but just use them for my own amusement.

You'll get similar focal length photos, but the quality will be noticeably better with the FF sensor and better glass.

that sensor isn't dirty, it's infected with digital aids.

Dude, anytime u'r shooting a moving object, you're panning \:D

Servo is a must for things that move.

For pans with blur while shooting the car from the side, I don't use the monopod. For pans while shooting them coming head on, I may or may not use a pod depending on the lens I'm using. 300 and under almost always no pod. 400 I could hand held for a while. 600 forget it; need the pod

When you get bored of using a telephoto to pan, use a wide angle \:\) But I think the most important bit is to remember that panning is just like off camera flash....it's a technique. Technique might make a poorly composed picture better once in a while; but chances are combining technique with context and composition would make a GREAT picture. A lot of pans I find have the technique, but they neglected context and composition.

Down on the Chena River for the Iron Dog races, watching some local yokels play on their snowmachines in between finishers.

Second time out with my new Pentax K30 with the 18-135 WR lens. It was right around 0*F but I had no issues with battery life or the cold affecting zooming, af, etc. The snow and its meter did not get along, so I was kinda winging it with the camera settings.

A good shot of the finish area too

And this is one of the "action" shots...

I shot these with my newly acquired Leica D-LUX 3, a hand-me-down from my old man. Pretty good for a slightly outdated point and shoot. \:\)

Well I'm on a plane home now lol, we were near Lahiana on Maui though. There were TONS of Humpbacks, I saw probably 2 dozen over the last week.

Those are my Mother's dogs. She has four.

The three on the right are rescues. She lives out in the boonies. Assholes are always dumping dogs on the roads around her neighborhood. She has kept the ones that she could not find homes for.

Also, is that looking down south at SLC? Great time of day for that shot.

That resolution is great too, you can almost see the state congressperson takin' a dump.

I honestly never shoot moving objects, mainly landscapes and crap. I was serious about needing to practice. Even when birding, I wait until they land. \:D

Glad you like it. Bought mine over a year now and I can't see upgrading to another FF body in the foreseeable future. The 5D2 is holding up really well for its age. Maybe when the 5D3 is $1700...

I took some hand-held photos at 200mm from the top of a mountain, randomly picking out valleys through the viewfinder. After importing the images, I could easily recognize the buildings in a different state (6+ miles away).
