Let's start with the first obvious question, why are you doing sit-ups in the first place?

You need to develop abs with training first and then diet does reveal them...
ya dont say

I don't think mr. mom has enough muscle mass to show abs anyways I don't know, runners tend to have pretty strong abs to control the twist of the torso while running. I agree he's low mass, but not that low of mass. That said, I suspect some moderate ab work-out would help him for both his activities and some better tone. I probably have more BF than him but show more ab shape(despite storing my fat in my torso). So that whole paragraph means I 1/2 agree.
OP, don't do full sit-ups, the crunch is the ab part. The top sit-up part is the hip-flexors. Personally I've only recently added abs back to my routine, because a good strenth routine naturally works them enough to have my 2pack(my diet hold me back, but I don't care). But I know you don't have a good strength program.
I like planks(though I find this recruits/works obliques more than abdominals). And cable pull downs are my new thing.
Think about what the abs do, they flex your spine, not your waist. Hips to ribs, not knees to chest. Do that proper motion(or lack of motion in the case of planks).

Abs aren't "made in the kitchen"... You need to develop abs with training first and then diet does reveal them... This, people regurgitate that shit all the time. I do leg lifts and weight situps (on a padded decline bench). ob1 you got abs? oh that's what I thought.. well then keep talking like you know

Most people aiming to get a defined mid section have have them due to incessant ab exercises. Some then see the light and realize that definition comes from monitoring the shit out of your diet. It was eye opening for me. I'll admit it...I used to do abs "to failure" all the time.
OP...you have a pullup bar. Try hanging toe to bar raises, start with regular leg lifts, then work your way up.

Only core exercises I'd do given you don't have a gym would be either planks and/or buy a $10 ab wheel and do those too.

BTW, a yoga mat is a good idea. A yoga mat on carpeting is a better idea.
Try planks, too. I may have a belly, but I also have a pretty strong core-my plank record is 2:35 at this point (although CSiFF can plank for 30 minutes+).
Mess with crunches, crunches w/ legs in the air, bicycle kick crunches, too.

Mess with crunches, crunches w/ legs in the air, bicycle kick crunches, too. 2:35 is pretty good. You're carrying more weight than me. I know I've done some 2:30s, but I'm not sure I ever did more. I do thinks plan bias the obliques in how they bridge the hips and the ribs. While the abs are involved, personally I notice I filled out/got definition outside of them.
I did no ab exercises from November-March. Still gained definition while roughly maintaining a weight and losing a waist size. Lots to be said for a good strength routine. The main reason I've added abs back in is to actually help my form, especially on pressing exercises. I'm more and more convinced that most ab workouts are over-rated.
I also think ALOT of "ab exercises" work other muscles and people don't even realize it. I mean I'd guess 90% of leg raises are done in a manner that work the hip flexors the most while isometrically working the abdomen. UNLESS you deliberately rotate your pelvis/curl your back, which is hard and rarely done. http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/HipFlexors/WtVerticalLegRaise.html Rectus Abdominis and Obliques only contract dynamically if actual waist flexion occurs. With no waist flexion, Rectus Abdominis and External Oblique will only act to stabilize pelvis and waist during hip flexion. It may be necessary to completely flex hips before waist flexion is possible;
Another one is anchored sit-ups, mostly hip flexors.
Your abs work on your spine, not your legs/hips.

lols On leg lifts, following the 531 he even says to go to you can't.
Video? I'd bet a pint (or tank of gas for the SV) that you're probably using your hip flexors for most that movement. Unless you're bending your spine.

Your point is that you do "ab exercises". I'd guess you're not doing more than minimal isometric ab recruitment.
Seems pretty relevant.

Because you're attacking me...
Fact is leg raises and weighted situps are good advice.
Stay focused. Where did I attack you? I disagreed with you. Quit being paranoid.
I disagree, even though I love 5-3-1, I think he's wrong on recommending leg raises. Most science/evidence is they're a hip flexor exercises for most people.
It's pretty intuitive, your muscles work across joints they span. Your abs don't attach across your hips, so any hip movement is superfluous to abs. If you need stronger hip flexors? then sure, do them. But most people don't, as they're pretty easy to build. And stronger/tighter hip flexors can exacerbate lower back problems for some as they'll magnify anterior hip rotation(like a tight back can) and magnify Lordosis(hollow back, or pushed out belly) if you're prone to it.
Most runners have have tight Hip flexors, so they should be stretching them more and working the other muscles in the chain.
