And here's a cool video for all you Western States fans out there:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha2o5sD0Lkk

Between me, Jeff (in blue sitting down) and Matt (in red) we've got 5 tickets for this year's lottery. I like those odds! Somebody is going to make it through

Edit: It may actually be 6-7 tickets now that I think of it

I'm in on that lottery also!

I've been going over and over in my head what could have happened.
I really didnt feel like I was pushing to hard on the first 25k loop, but I noticed early that I just didnt feel right on the downhill sections...like just no get up and go.
I had a cold kind of thing the whole week before and had some sore swollen glands, so I think something was just off with me.
It really scared the shit out of me though.

You California guys should come out next year whatever happens. CSi Western States Meet

My brother is a 4 time loser going into this years lottery so he's got a pretty good chance too. I'll likely be up there either way though.

Had a great 10 mile run on the trails today...almost 2200 feet of elevation. Took me 1:39 to do, so I was able to sneak in just under 10 minute miles.

That run puts me at 42.5 in the last 4 days. Feeling very strong for Vegas.

Glad to hear it, Chris! You can join in our group's crewing/pacing if we get someone in and your brother doesn't. (and you want to, of course haha)

Well crap, now I really hope one of us gets selected. I don't think I can justify the cost and time off work to just go watch and it'd be great meeting you both. Keep your fingers crossed!

PS I had a mini-heart attack today when I realized my 2012 races were no longer eligible qualifiers. Then I realized my Ice Age 11:24 disaster didn't count either (too slow). Land Between the Lakes was my only eligible run and I wasn't sure that was even on the list. Then I checked. And it was. And I could breathe again.

Now my last-place goal at JFK next month is sub-11 so I have my qualifier for 2015 out of the way very early \:D

If one of you guys do get in, I have connections on a big cabin you can stay at about 15 minutes from the start. It's owned by the guy I paced (his inlaws anyways) and is pretty much always available to friends and family. It's got some badass 70's shag throughout.

That's awesome man!! Why wouldn't you be staying there if/when your brother gets in? Can we make it a CSi & Friends Cabin??

Oh man, that would be so much fun

Turns out Matt and Jeff only have one ticket apiece this year, so I was way off. I have two making four chances between the three of us. Eek.

I met a guy at LBL who got into WS his very first time out. And it was his first 100. Wound up doing very well too - lucky guy

Woke up to a nice email. Still not a podium, but way more in line with what I thought I did.

Interesting that you seem down on the bike end of things, yet you're super strong on the bike leg.

I'm on day 2 of couch to 5k, trying this shit again, hoping not to hurt myself again. Buying some new shoes in the next week or so.

Been riding fairly hard, so the cardio end of it is nothing. Impact hasn't felt bad at all.

*checks calendar*
*sees it's not April 1st*

I'm glad they did it though. I've been hoping they would do something like this so the WS lottery doesn't become another Hard Rock situation. And that's coming from someone who doesn't qualify under these new standards. I'd much rather have tougher qualifying standards and an easier lottery than the other way around.

That said, my plan of qualifying for 2015 at JFK next month is out the window. Now I really have to be successful at Leadville (v3 \:\( ) next year. Or sneak in by running UROC in under 16:00 the following month.

Crazy shit. My world is turned upside down

EDIT: I'm already scheming:

Leadville: August 16-17th
Run Rabbit Run: +4 weeks (September 12th probably)
UROC 100K: +6 weeks (September 27th probably)

I'm lucky to have three qualifiers within two hours' drive but they're sort of bunched up. I just want Leadville to go well, not sure which of the other two I would do if it doesn't. Again.

If I can qualify in 2014 that means I should be going into a significantly less competitive lottery with three tickets. That would be huge

The problem was the course. It 3 miles out and 3 back on a non-closed, narrow bike path along the aquaduct. There are 3 underpasses you go through each way, and you are absolutely not allowed to pass on those sections. The first (and last) underpass had 6 inches of water covering the path because it was a really high tide. I caught up to the tail end of the wave in front of me as well, pso I had to slow for some strategic passing as well.

So yeah....I spent half the time getting held up by people in front of me, then the other half hammering to get back up to speed. Straight shot I probably could shave a few minutes off that time.

Yeah, that's a huge change! I wasn't really interested in doing any other 100 milers other than States. 100k's just aren't around as much, and especially not ones that are qualifiers.

I will say, I have been toying with the idea of giving Angeles Crest a shot though.

To be fair, there are seven 100K qualifiers in the US and you've got two in California and one in Oregon!

Yeah, I know. \:D

It was funny...at WS my buddy that ran actually got some upturned noses from other racers when they found out he had qualified at AR50. Of course he went on to smoke them that day, but still.

A man running 100 miles was given shit for earning the chance to run 100 miles by running a particular 50 miles. What a world

That said, I totally get that crazy logic and would lean towards trying again at Run Rabbit Run rather than sneaking in the "easy" door with a 100K. I feel ridiculous writing that.

Ah..gotcha. ;\)

I LOVE racing on the bike, I just dont care for the whole training part of it...since it takes time away from my running. \:D I still plan on racing a few tris next year with maybe a half iron being my A race though.

Thanks for the offer! My big focus race next year is Leadville, which is closer to home and only two weeks after Burning River, so probably not in 2014. I bet that one is going to get much more popular though. It's one of the only qualifiers in that part of the country now. Instant über-popularity!

were you planning on AR being your WS100 qualifier? Apparently there are lots of butthurt people asking for refunds because its not a qualifier any more.

Not really, but I wasnt going to turn it down if I happened to get in.

WS still scares the shit out of me, so I'm not in any hurry to try and get in.

Had a great run on the trails this morning:

14.5 miles, 9:25 pace, 2700 feet of gain. Felt really good the whole time too. I'm already at 42 miles for the week, and 57 in the last 6 days.

And where did you hear about AR runners asking for refunds? That's hilarious

I've read some comments saying the changes shouldn't have a significant impact on lottery odds as people will simply move up to 100K races. I don't believe it. I think there's an army of 10-11 hour 50 milers out there who are in big trouble.

100km at 16 hours is slower than that, no?

True, but I've seen a lot of people finishing their first 50 around the 11 hour mark and there's no way in hell they're tacking on another half marathon. It's like watching survivors of a car accident stumbling around out there

Yeah...there is always a huge contingent at relatively "easy" 50 milers who flirt with the cutoff. Add in another 13 miles and their likelihood of finishing is slim to none.
