I say just run till you need to walk, then start up again when you get your wind back. The run segments will quickly get longer, walk segments shorter. Since Ive started running, I'm doing 3:00 run, 2:00 walk x 4, with a 4:00 cool down at the end. My question is, how long should I keep doing this same cycle? Stick with this for 2 weeks, and then go to 4:00 run, 2:00 walk, or something else altogether? What are your thoughts?
What Mommy said. I'd make distance targets before time targets too. Then the next run, try and beat it. Not every run needs to be a world beater, but you do need to push yourself once in a while.

I'm not going to read the whole thread - I'm sorry noob here
When you are running, do you always listen to music? Where does your mind go?
I was just thinking about this, as I have been progressing to longer runs. I have been trying my best to focus on feeling good and enjoying the run, my legs, bla bla. But a lot of the time I'm kind of thinking about random stupid things, like my nose is getting snotty or my baby toe is feeling smooshed.
Any thoughts on what I should be focusing on? Where do you run? If the answer is treadmill then there is no way to make it enjoyable. I dont run with music but I will usually have a song stuck in my head and then start making up different lyrics for it.

I was actually doing that yesterday too! We did 4 seperate runs, increasing distance, with 2 minutes rest between each - so we would have to stop into the gym and post times - each time I ended up grabbing the song playing in the gym and carrying that same damn one in my head over each leg of the run

I have been running regularly since February, and yesterday I reached the 10 mile milestone for the first time. Before February, the farthest I had ever run was 4 miles like one time. Feeling pretty proud of myself, albeit sore. Great job man. That 10 mile mark really is a mental milestone.

6 miles last night pushing the stroller/dog and then a nice hard 15 miles today. I'm at 43 for the week and I plan on doing another 10 tomorrow. I always felt like a beast when I do 50-60 mile weeks, then you realize there are guys doing 200 miles a week. lol, I know. I've been listening to ultrarunnerpodcasts on my mp3 player during runs lately, and to hear guys like Geoff Roes say they did an easy 120 mile week with 10,000feet of vertical just makes me shake my head. I've had one 200 mile month in my running career. It does feel good to put in some heavy mileage and have the body cooperate...even feel great afterwards. My goal is to really make this upcoming marathon feel easy.
If it feels easy you didnt go hard enough!!
Oh...got some new trail rubber.

This goes for the bike and for the 1 little 3.5 mile weekly (road) run:
I listen to music--especially when I run. I'd go nuts if I didn't. Not quite as important on the bike, for some reason.
Once I get through the first portion of the run (the "I can't do this today/I feel like shit/this sucks" part before I find my groove), I just settle in and I let my mind wander. Of course, I pay attention to my surroundings, but generally, this is my time to just think about stuff.
I guess "enjoy the ride" is my best advice.

Finally got back to 5 miles On Sunday, no foot pain. I'll just keep plugging away. I can definitely see doing a 1/2 again this autumn.
My pace was not rocketing. Mid 8s. ugh it'll be a while before I start thinking of sub 21 minute 5ks again..

Ran and worked for the first time today. The shoes are dope, great purchase.
Like all the reviews say, perfect combination of light weight and support.

Accidentally ended up doing a 10k, furthest I've gone in nearly a year I knew about a trail run, and was going to the "short" option of 6-ish k, but my friend convinced me(triathletes are crazy). So i'm finally breakin 10k on a trail run, brilliant, and... in the dark. It was an awesome race, I had to 'trot' a few of the uphill portions, and my time was probably 30 minutes slower than a normal 10k. 400m, of vert will do that though, and it was a muddy mtn bike trail in the dark not getting hurt and having fun was the major priority.
The fact that it was offroad means my feet don't feel bad at all. My knees and hips are a bit sore from the uneven steps(especially in the dark).
It was a blast to do, great views, got some great "zoning" when you can only focus on 30ft at a time. Pretty awesome running through a cloud on top of a mtn and not seeing anyone else for a good 2 minutes, but also good running companionship when we ran together.
Still feeling awesome, but man my quads or sore. Doing deep squats the day before surely helped. Time for some R&R.

What do you guys do in this heat?!
OMG! I can only do early am runs on Sundays, so it's generally evening when I can get one in....but even then, the temperature has been between 90 and 100 degrees. By the time it's decently cooled down it's around midnight (and I've long gone to sleep)
Do you actually run in the stiffy heat? Is there something I can do to make it easier/less deathly? Or is it just a case of sucking it up and getting used to it? As a crossfitter you should be familiar with HTFU! The heat isn't going to hurt you as long as you're smart. Wear sunscreen, visor, sunglasses, and hydrate accordingly. Me, I'm begging for some epically hot days over the next two months. I'll be doing my next Ironman in fucking Louisville....historically near 100 on race day with an equal level of humidity. I plan on having ice down my shorts the entire run.
I guess I will have to get my head into it more. Running is a deeply mental things for me. I have been super fantastic at telling myself that I can't do it
