Unless you're shooting fast and wide open, you'll still get movement when you try to shoot the moon. I shot through a telescope @ ~1200mm and I could watch the moon move across my viewfinder.

One of the big things about shooting the Moon is to NOT shoot it when it is full. You get more detail and can see the craters and stuff when it isn't so bright.

Here is one I took with my A65 and 55-200mm kit lens...

I guess the word I was looking for is that the Moon has more contrast when it is not full.

I have a six inch diameter Dobsonian telescope that I have played with a few times. The first time I had it out I was looking at the full moon with it. And I kid you not, I saw a satellite pass in front of the Moon. It was the coolest thing EVER and was only there for a split second. What I should do is hook up my NEX-3 to it, focus everything in and record video for a while. See if I can catch another Satellite. Hmmm...

On a dark clear night you can sometimes see satellites streaking across the sky.

That's the cop out way though to me... If you can't take a picture of it full... I kind of feel sorry for you... I got 99 problems... fuck jay z....

Anyway... I've taken many a picture of the moon now, some/many of them are handheld. 1/300sec, ISO200-400, F5.6-8... easy handheld. Obviously a good tripod helps a ton and allows ISO100 to be shot rather easily around 1/60-1/100sec.

The things I've found is first take 1-2 shots just to get focus. Even using 10x with live view if you miss it by 1/1000 of turn on the focus ring, it will suck.

Second, a polarize has helped me a bunch, especially when it is extra extra bright. I've found shooting it lower in the sky is a little better, but often times beggars can't be choosers so... just take pictures.

Finally, lots of work in PS and LR. Sharpening, high pass sharpening, contrast, etc... Well actually not a lot of PS and LR... but definitely some. I always find, at least where I'm at, to get a small halo around the moon and unless shooting at anything under ISO200, lots of noise in space which needs removed (well not a lot, but any there always just looks like fuck after processing some, so I just kill it early and not worry about it.

I set the camera to f/11, 1/10sec, ISO-100 and put it on a tripod with a remote shutter release. Turn AF off, manually focus using live view, and adjust exposure within a few test shots if needed.

I like to overexpose a little bit because pumping up the black / dark / shadow levels is quick and easy in PP. Sharpen whenever possible, reduce noise, viola.

Handheld works too. Just fill up the buffer and you'll probably have a keeper or two.

I'm thinking it is more personal preference. I like to be able to see the depth of craters and height of mountains versus the more 2d like image you get from picturing the Moon when it is full with no shadows.

this is like, 9-12ish shots with the 85 1.8. they drove it out of the shop the day before leaving for vegas. used photomerge in ps cs5. it's a neat effect with some subjects, but this one is just too big, too deep

I wish I lived in an area where I can go out and take pics like yours! Living in middle of suburbia doesn't lend to many photo ops! Or maybe it had to do with my laziness...

Haha i feel ya. They do require a little drive but yeah, easier to get out of the city than it is back east where you just run into another city.

I've Seen some pretty spectacular stuff from the UP over there.

Attempt #1 and my follow up attempt to correct some things I didn't love about the first.

I'm very much looking forward to getting back into photography after graduation next month, so hopefully I can stop posting photos from 2009 in here

(I hope I haven't posted either of these in this thread already. I'm pulling from a small pool and I haven't been keeping track of what I've posted.)

Thanks. I just winged it. I did the standard line-ups as well, then mixed it up.

I've got about 3000 shots to go through FML
