That makes me dizzy, but I still kind of like it.

What's wrong with UWA and AF? I've only had mine on manual focus once and that was a mistake (self portrait and after 10 shots where I changed the lighting slightly each time I had managed to move the chair I was sitting in out of focus - so when I finally had the lighting perfect, the shot was soft (but not so soft that you could readily see it in the lcd - would have gone much better if I had a laptop and shot tethered).

The autofocus on the XS at least doesn't do a very good job, it's all over the fucking place. I took all of my shots handheld today, I've been reading that once the fstop goes up, I really need to start using the tripod.

Uh well, no... Once the shutter speed gets slow you need to use a tripod. Which is often in conjunction with your aperture.

I've been scouring the 10-22mm Flickr group and looking at EXIF data to see what settings people are using with this lens. From what I can tell I was a little large on the aperture today. Ah well, there is always next time! I'll post another example..

f/8 will give you a sharper image than a f/3.5. Definitely use a tripod. When you PP, if you're using Lightroom, make sure you use the lens profile for correction.

I shoot exclusively in the club with my 10-22, and I can attest that my camera searches a lot of focus. Then again, it's dark as hell and I'm using an XT.

Yeah, I think if I'm going to keep using the AF, I'll just pick my point and go from there.

*nitpick warning* This is not true. Any given lens tends to be sharpest within one stop of wide open. While stopping down will give you more depth of field, it will not inherently give you a "sharper" image than a wider aperture.

Isn't the whole point of using a UWA to get as much as possible in the pic and get everything as sharp as possible at the same time? (Honest question)

The rule of thumb at school is three stops down for the sharpest aperture.

It gets used to cram as much as possible into the frame by most people most of the time, but really it's job is to give maximum space to the individual elements in the frame (which is part of the perspective distortion). In the same way that telephotos flatten space and can bring elements together, wide angles expand space and separate those elements. Ultrawide shots beg for at least three points of interest in the frame - foreground, middle and background (though it can still work without them).

Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm out shooting \:\)

Don't look at me, I choose my apertures based mostly on desired dof and occasionally shutter speed.

Damnit! Now I don't really want the 10-22 anymore. I really really really want it!

I just got back from the zoo with my Mom.. Played a ton with my 100macro inside and even used my 50mm some. Trying to force myself to try things in different ways and... I kind of like it. The zoo is my new test ground.

Next time I head out it's going to be on the tripod with the fstop up a few notches. The fact that some of the trees are soft drive me fucking crazy for some reason, lol.
