Congrats on the 4 miles man. Without going back over the whole thread I think that is the farthest I have seen you say you have ran. It doesn't matter how you got it finished as long as you got through it. It will only get easier from here.

My first race with with around 500 people and I was a little nervous. I guess your usual butterflies but I wouldn't call it intimidation. As far as the music, it depends on the race. My first race it wasnt a problem to run with my ipod, but the half marathon im running in November specifically says no portable music players. Im not sure why, maybe just their rules. I would say if you haven't seen anything saying you can't wear it, you should go ahead and wear it.
One tip I have is don't get in the back of the pack at the starting line. You will spend the first 1/2 mile dodging people, which can take a lot out of you real quick.

Gosh Im so envious of being able to run like that. Maybe this time next year. Ima go down ~5k today (just run for 30:00 or so). What's the best running training to lower my 5k time? Just more distance? Intervals? Etc? -Matt
Tempo runs are what you're looking for to actually get faster, as opposed to just increasing distance: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-265-12224-0,00.html
Figured I'd jump in on this thread since I've started reading these forums regularly again. I recently (about 2 months ago) started running/lifting again after taking about two years off for, well... no good reason, really. I just got lazy and now I'm paying the price. When I was 20 I was in incredibly good shape, as I played soccer and tennis competitively and ran religiously (at one point I had my mile to just under 5 mins... 4:55ish or so). Now I'm 29 and a tad overweight at 6'2 203 and am shocked at where I stand on conditioning. My mile as of a couple days ago is 7:45, and I'm working up from an easy pace of about 10 mi/wk right now (split between 3 days). It's actually really frustrating feeling so slow compared to where I used to be, but at the same time it's a good motivating factor because I've been fast before and I know I can get there again.
Short term (~ 6 months) I want to get myself to a sub-20 min 5k time and work back up to about 20 mi/wk, while getting the weight back down to 180 or so. I'm honestly not sure how practical the timeframe is and how my body will cooperate, but we'll see.

oh and i did 5.5 miles of hilly fun-ness last night with a fat sprint up the deathstar of a hill(gigantic mesa) that my condo sits on. it seriously 1/4 of insanely steep grade. dirtydante can attest to the mesa of death! Good deal man. Im running in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, so Ive got hill training wherever I go. Now when I run on flat ground it almost feels surreal. -Matt Dude, haven't you seen Deliverance? Some redkneck is gonna try to make you squeel like a pig someday
