When I did them on the trainer I would just wait for a commercial break in whatever I was watching, then put the hammer down till they were over, lol. Super scientific.

you are never going to be able to hold max power for 4-5-6 minutes so you will obviously have to take it down a notch and try and hold the same power output for the entire duration. Takes a bit of practice to find out what kind of power level/heart rate to push for certain times.
The beauty with intervals is there is no real wrong way to do it. You can mix it up with longer, lower power pushes and also throw in some 1 minute balls to the wall cough up blood sprints. Just don't over do it.

The longest intervals I did on the trainer were 2:30-3 minutes.

Out on the path I don't really time them. There's a 4 mile segment where I go balls out for 12-13 minutes depending on wind. Otherwise I just try to move fairly quickly on a 20-25 mile loop.

Same path done as a TT is complete balls out for 8.7 out, rest, 8.7 back. That's rough. Best is ~52 minutes that way.

cool, thanks guys. I'm noticing I'm not anywhere near as fast as I thought I might be
my 'goal' of holding 20mph for say 40km [in whatever wind conditions there are] is a bit of a reach in my current fitness. I seem to barely hang on [in favorable winds!] for 10 miles or so. I think I also need to work on my aero position heh

20 mph average on a standard road bike is no small feat outside of the nato realm. On a warm, windless day on that aforementioned 17.5 mile flat path, I can get close to it (19.7 last summer iirc). I think I'll hit it this summer, but it's a big effort.

Did my first road race in 2 years today... Turkey Hill Country Classic which is put on by the drink company, Turkey Hill, obviously. Its a local race and has a nasty 1 mile downhill finish with a tailwind usually. Last year there was 3 really bad crashes in the field sprint in 3 different classes, so i was on my guard for the finish. The race was 42 miles or 7 laps around a 6 mile course. The last lap the route diverts and we go up whats called "gamber wall" which is a .1 mile, 20% grade kicker. I hung towards the front as much as i could in a effort to avoid the yo-yo'ing of the back of the 100 man field. I knew some of the stronger guys in the field so I payed attention to where they were. The race was pretty uneventful for the most part..a few small breaks that didnt stick, i bridged to a break of 5 guys and say 201bpm on my hr monitor which damn near blew me up. The last lap is when the fire works erupted. We come back down the hill from gamber wall and had about 3 miles to the finish. making a left turn back onto the original course, 2 dudes about 5 guys in front of me go down..i locked up and swerved around and made it out ok... so we go down this fast downhill and make a right back onto the home straight of about 2 miles, that has a series of 3 rollers before the downhill section. I started slowly making my way towards the front in a attempt to escape the carnage. so we crest the third roller and its all downhill to the finish with a tailwind in a 40+man group. I working to find a gap and have a opening to sprint from. we cross the 1K to go sign and the course makes a little S before straight to the finish. this is where all hell broke loose. im about 10-15th and we start sprinting. i hear a boom and shit going awry to my left, then i see a scott pro mtb guy go down 2 riders in front of me. i swerve to my right, anticipating that the guy in front of me also goes right. he goes left. i run off the road at almost 40mph, bring it back on, take a glance behind me, and literally, i mean literally the entire field is either stopped or on the ground so i cruised the last 100 yards to a 7th place finish and won 30 bucks holla! so fucking close to getting taken out. 42.4 miles in 1hr 47min. I covered the final .4 miles in 36 seconds at 38.5mph at 800+ watts

apparently I should have packed a powerlink with me today

chain exploded on me two pedal strokes into the start

had to sprint with bike all the way to pit from staging area, took like 5 minutes to find a gd link. all the while two more age groups have been sent out.

ended up 6th in my group (of 16 or 17) - would have been 5th but I dropped chain off the cassette on the final climb, prob have gotten 3rd if I didn't OTB in a rock garden

I've been hitting close to 100 miles a week for a bit now. IIRC, I'm only at ~775 miles YTD at the moment. I'd like May to be another 400+ mile month.

Had a strong 27 miles today. Finished with 13 miles of flat with a decent tailwind.

first real CAT1 race today, none of the open bs, at french creek today. super rocky. i crash here every year and what do you know i ate shit hard twice and hurt my hip that i broke the other year pretty good and rashed the hell out of myself. the good news though is that i beat my strong teammate and got 3rd out of 19 in the CAT1 19-39 age group. my teammate got 4th. im pumped i beat him since hes a beast and just mashes the hell out of climbs. the cool part is that if i would have raced the pro/cat1 race, my time was good enough for 8th place..and it payed top 20. FUUUUUU. next time. 21.6 miles, 26000ft of climb, 11.8 mph avg, 181avg hr, 195 max 1:49.xx

Did a 61 mile berfday ride today. Averaged 16.2 mph, which I'm pretty content with.

I don't even feel beaten-up from it. /notbadobama

Quick question: Why do you guys always put some "nicer" shorts on over your kit for the podium pics? Self conscious? \:D

Never been a fan of ellsworth, that rear end doesn't look like it has changed in 15 years and you pay a huge premium for the name. I've never actually rode one so my opinion is entirely subjective, kind of like how I can't stand cannondale because of all their stupid proprietary designs.

I'm sure the bike will be a blast, new bikes always are. Did you entertain the idea of a 1x11 drive train for a race bike?
