ive never ridden one either but they are supposed to be a great handling bike. i did think about 1x11 but with the variety of types of racing i decided to go 2x10. plus im a spinner and not a masher so i like to have the options. if it aint broke dont fix it. it also helped cut some cost. this was enough as it was. i will likely go 1x11 eventually though, but not this year

Big mileage week (at least for me this week)--~180 miles for the week. Nice mix of a couple of longer rides (61, 41), with a 12 mile TT and a couple of singlespeed rides mixed in.

Wut dat base do

132 miles of hill climbs and headwinds this wkd complete with a tent campout with my group and 4 hours of sleep. Lesson learned: buy some earplugs.

That's brutal. But I'm sure you're looking back at it as a positive experience.

My lungs/throat are WRECKED from the current pollen onslaught--I've been a mess after every ride for the past week and a half now.

Did my 2nd TT tonight. Averaged 19.7 mph over 12.1 miles with a couple of miles of brutal climbing tempered by a few miles of hairy descending. Did it in 36:29, which is 2 minutes faster than last week (learning the course, skinnier/lighter tires, no 60 mile ride yesterday), which should put me mid-pack.

A few FAST tri-chicks were there tonight--one was a pink blur that blew by me. \:\( My friend Sarah used to be a hardcore triathlete, now she's not as serious, but she still threw down in the 33 minute range with shitty diet and marginal training. Wut dat natural talent do. BTW--she was all nipples in her sportsbra--no pics, but I was transfixed.

Lying in bed with my tablet. Legs are hammered. Rode 20 miles on the singlespeed and that didn't beat me up enough, so I ran my 5k loop around my neighborhood. Child's play for the triathletes in the bunch but a rough recovery for me. I'm guessing the morning will suck.

Nice work fellas! Podiums!

I haven't done much since the Almanzo 100 (105 miles of hilly gravel in SE Minnesota) a couple weeks ago. Ran my All-City Mr. Pink with Challenge Grifo 33's. Shaved nearly an hour from last year's time, and I spent extra time at the mile 75 beer stop and water crossing. For next year I think I can shave another hour, at least that's my goal. I really wish (not really) that I had more hills to train on, some of the hills were just brutal! I'm still not confident on the fast downhills, especially on loose gravel. I think I hit 35mph, which was plenty scary.

However, not as scary as this.... Almanzo Horses

If I would have seen those when I hit that part of the course I would have flipped the fuck out.

So now on to Tour de Cure in 2 weeks, then Seattle to Portland in July. Then hopefully lots of MTB!

Those gravel races sound RAD--and brutal.

I had another 100+ mile week last week and I have to add it up, but I think I did 500 for the month.

Did 45 yesterday and I think I'm sneaking in a mellow 20 or so today. TT this Tuesday, weather permitting.

I'm WAY down weight-wise. 181 lbs this morning, but I think a couple of those lbs are water weight. Still stoked about it tho

i traveled to Loudonville, Ohio this past weekend to race the Mohican 100 mountain bike race. The field was stacked with gerry pflug, steve twinning, christian tanguy and the legend, tinker jaurez. I had no idea how i could do, so i just set the bar at sub 9 hours since the course had about 3K less ft of climbing then cohutta 100( still over 10K though). They start all 600 people at once, regardless of class or if you are doing the 100K route, so i lined up 2nd row behind tinker in an effort to get away with the leaders and avoid bottle necks going into the single track, as the start was a 1/4 mile sprint to a 300ft road climb, followed by 4 miles of road until we hit the forest. gun went off at 7am and away we went. up over the hill all was good but was back further than i wanted to be. a peloton was forming up ahead so i busted ass and got into the lead group of about 30, where i hung for the first half hour before i calmed my ass down and slowed down. the first 35 miles was all single track and i rode in a freight train with about 7 other guys but was riding harder than i wanted too. i have cramping issues due to not getting enough salt, but i found the solution with tailwind nutrition, but i didnt order in time so i had to use perpetuem. tailwind is camelback compatible while the perpetuem isnt the best when you are trying to make a mix to last for 5 hours, so i had to use a bottle, which hurt me since its a bitch to get the bottle in/out with my FS bike. so the first 35 miles was hard to get calories in. the race was very tough, the climbs werent as long as cohutta, but they were steeper and they really wore on me. i was tired by mile 50 and was regretting going out so hard. from mile 50 on, i was eating endurolytes from the aid stations like candy. from mile 60-72 there was a rail trail type section that i thought i could lay down some rubber but that section about damn near blew me up since the first 6 miles was a gradual uphill grade, my hr was 150ish and my legs were on fire and i was worried i wouldnt go sub 9. about 80miles in i started to get that tight feeling on the inside of my knees and i knew i was going to cramp soon. i actually walked halfway up a road climb to keep from cramping. the last aid station was at 92 miles, got some more endurolytes and trudged on. then the cramps started bad and i rode through them the best i could for the remaining miles and i was cramping across the line. i finished and got my growler of Great Lakes Brewing beer. I went sub 9 easily at 8hrs 30min, 10,500ft climb, 31st/170ish. my friend simona went 9hrs 52min and got 6th overall in the womans, katie, leslie and mike, bailed where the 100K and 100mile course split, and opted to do the 100K because they didnt have it in them and my buddy brad went the wrong way and rode 12 miles the wrong way on the 100K course before he turned around and finished the 100 miler. Some dude went the wrong way, finished the 100K course, rode 10 miles on the road back to aid 3, which was mile 46 in the race, and then finished the 100 miler, so he did both courses LOL that hurt a lot more than cohutta. christian tanguy beat tinker jaurez by 2 seconds in 6 hours 55 min. insane.

shitty pic

tinker juarez

the story behind the paper is the guy who owns the bike shop thats our title sponsor, joined up with tinker when he was racing Race Across America a few years ago since the course runs about 20 miles from where we live. He went out at 1am to catch tinker and he sprinted full speed to get up to speed and it took all he had to stay with tinker and tinker was chatting him up like it was nothing and he said to tony, "whats wrong, i only have 2750 miles on my legs" so i made a sign for him to hold to make fun of tony \:D

well an educational weekend

went to Arkansas this morning for a race to see who I have to deal with in July and how I do racing a course that I've never ridden.

ended up 4th - may have been able to hold 3rd if I hadn't taken a wrong turn at some really shitty marked intersection and not hitting a gnarly climb with my HR already pegged.

had the holeshot and held onto first for the first 2mi maybe, but not knowing when climbs were coming up was punishment

Awesome writeup nato, cool you got to meet tinker. Also killer time for 100 miles on the MTB, though when you compare it to the winners it doesn't seem all that great \:\) Crazy how fast those guys can ride for such long distances.

Was :30 slower than last time at the local TT. Climbed a lot stronger but there were some strong headwinds that knocked me back in a few spots. At one point I was like "WTF--I'm going to a lower gear during a descent!?!"

Big turnout tho. Hopefully, I'm firmly mid-pack. I heard other complaints about being slower.

I'm working on my horrible tanlines, but as an Italian with dark features, it won't take much. MS150 is usually when they are at their peak foliage for the year in terms of contrast.

I'm kissing 1300 for the year at the moment. Did 540 miles last month, hoping to do around 500 this month.

Saw the rap battle on FB yesterday morning. Funnier than I expected.

That Ellsworth looks mean as fuck. I love the wheels. You running a triple on it?

It's been rainy around here for a decent chunk of the week. I've been running more than riding as a result. (well, 48 on Sunday, 20 on Tuesday). I hope to get in 20ish tomorrow and 40-50 on Sunday. The rest of the week will be some lazy spinning, as the main even of the MS150 is next weekend and as of now, weatherbug says it'll be PERFECT weather--77 on Saturday and 79 on Sunday.

I'm gonna put my heavier, nuke-proof 700x25 Conti Supersports on there for both comfort and flat resistance--weight be damned (they're monsters at ~390g each), but they ride so smoothly, I think I'll be a lot less beaten up over the 170+ miles of the weekend.

Putting my old WTB seat on because the lighter, racier Selle Italia gets a bit painful after the 60 mile mark. Also throwing in an extra spacer in the stem to save the back a bit. Basically, I'm turning the damn bike into a touring bike.

I figure I'll run only one full bottle for most of the ride to make up the weight difference. Plenty of rest stops.

nah its a 2x10
Build specs are:
2014 Ellsworth Evolve Carbon
Fox 32 CTD fork and shock
Shimano XT components
Thomson seatpost
Thomson stem
Thomson carbon bars
Mavic SLR Rims
Time ATAC XC8 Carbon pedals
Prologo Scratch Pro Titanium saddle
Avid BB7 mechanical discs
weight: 25.00lbs dead on

I have to cut 2 inches of the bars off yet and cut off the rest of the steerer tube now that I slammed the stem on the headset, no spacers ftw, so it should be just under 25 lbs. not bad for a FS 29r

have fun at ms150 next weekend!

I'm digging that you went with the BB7 mechs. Simplicity FTW. When/if I do a disc road setup, those are what I plan on running.

Gonna do the century option on day 1 of the 150. I hope I can do it in 6.5 hours. Last year kissed 7. The weather looks like it will be amazing (assuming a correct forecast).

Huh I have those brakes on my ebike and I'm afraid they are horrid. Hopefully not for you tho (poor modulation, adjustment, maintenance), of course an ebike has much greater demands on brakes than a normal bike but then again maybe not as I'm not descending 2500' in 8 minutes or so on it (200mm/180mm)

Probably the way they are set up. I have them on my epic now and 3 of my teammates run them too and none of us have issues. No idea how they'd work on a ebike though

FWIW, I have 10 year-old Hayes mechanicals on my mountainbike and they are pretty great. Zero issues with them. The BB7's have been the go-to mechs for quite awhile. Didn't SRAM substitute their recalled hydro discs for BB7's?

Anyway, 21 miles yesterday. 48 today. Many mechanicals today. Popped a spoke at some point, computer went on the fritz and my bottom bracket now sounds pretty crunchy.

New BB should be in the mail, I have extra spokes for the wheel and I have a couple of other computers hanging around. I'll do all of that and re-tape my bars while I'm at it.

sounds like you have some work to do! lol

so i have 2 rides and about 20 miles on the ellsworth. Thoughts so far. First ride sucked. it was damp, muddy and i was half scared to ride it because carbon lol the suspension felt "off" on downhills and it wasnt very confidence inspiring. i wasnt pleased. Today i went back out and completely screwed around with the settings. i needed to add way for rebound to the rear and a few clicks to the front. i also played around with the climb trail descend modes. i got the bike to track good and stick pretty well on downhills, might fiddle with it some more for shits and giggles , but it feels good now. climbing thouhg. wow this thing climbs like a raped ape. put the rear shock on climb, lock out the front fork and this thing scoots up hills likee nobodies business. very happy with that. just gotta get use to how it descend on the downhills and well be in business. i also like i have a full 100mm of travel vs 80mm i had on the epic and the ground clearance is better as well.

Sweet. Glad it's working out. It would suck to hate such a high-end purchase.

I fixed most of my shit today. Bought some new bar tape tonight and gonna get in a shakedown run tomorrow. Carb loading starts on Wed. Gotta pick up a bunch of Hammer Heed, too.

I was just looking at them online the other night.

There's a cyclocross "training park" that is supposedly going to open up in the near future around here that got me thinking "I should pick up a cheapie CX bike".
