I dunno about that, as someone who readily dies at/about the 18 mile mark, and who recently has been able to beat race-level PRs in a half distance just in a normal workout, I think suggesting [for noobs] that the "mile 20 thing" isn't real is just an experienced runner getting vastly more fit/reducing the time they normal hit mile 20 at/reduced effort level to get there and all that

Eg I'm sure Meb ain't got no wall at mile 20 either. But Joe 12-pack sure as shit does. And it ain't just mental. Shit sucks man. At the 18 mile mark or so my legs are fried as fried can be--I'm done man--time for a cry lol.

So sure run like ~20+ marathons or something and you get more and more able to handle it from a fitness perspective. zomg it gets easier, Shocker! Take 2 years off and gain 20# and see how you do

I was reading on some other running forums there are mid-distance runners at the elite-age-group level [~4:10 milers, or sub 16:00 5k'ers] that are terrified of the marathon [and the 13.1 even some of them claim to be, but I'm sure terrified to them = <1:20:00] and never go longer than 6-8 in training but are obviously fit.

But Kent has multiple marathons under his belt, and lots of long training runs in the 20 mile range...so he's far from a noob now, and quite fit to boot. I'm not saying there isn't something physical going on...but at some point there is a very real mental game going on where you can either succumb to the pain and negative thougts, or embrace it and push on.

There is definitely a fight of sorts when hitting that wall. The brain says one thing while the body does another. The most difficult part IMO is the change in the stream of consciousness during the last 6-8 miles. Awareness and focus are virtually nonexistent. And the only way to get it back - temporarily at least - is to slow down or walk.

I think the more often someone is exposed to it, the better prepared they are to deal with it. I guess we'll see in a week or two. \:D

Nice job Kent...I'm loving your dedication to the training plan.
After taking Friday and Saturday off for Christmas festivities with family, and relatively low treadmill mileage earlier in the week, so decided on a whim to do 20 road miles yesterday. Ran to Bolsa Chica and back. Felt pretty solid at a very even 7:50ish pace. 2 more weeks of 50 miles minimum, then a week taper for the San Diego 50 miler on the 16th. Hoping I can go 8:30 or so for that one since it only has 4K feet of vert.

Also got into Way Too Cool 50k in March for the 4th year in a row, and am likely signing up for the Valencia 50k 2 weeks later.

Angeles Crest doesn't feel so far off anymore.

Though I've been taking the above advice in "embracing the suck." Seems to be a good mental trick as the longer miles wear on.

It's a super mellow 4% grade almost the whole way too...should mean a lot less pounding than what I experienced at Canyon City.

This week was crazy but managed to knock out a moderately quick 10 miler Thursday and a relaxed 20 miler with the Club on Saturday. Averaged a 9:45 pace with plenty of hills around Back Bay. Felt a little sore yesterday and strong today. Hoping that's good news.

Going to do a fast 16 miler next Saturday and round out with a fast 22 miler in two weeks. Feeling a bit more confident. Woot!

Those are some solid runs Kent! I'm impressed to see you so nonchalant about those long runs...that's a great indicator of your fitness and mental game being on point.


I ended up with a pretty decent week considering the holidays. Ended up with 67 miles which includes a few slow hikes with the family, but I ended with 13 on the trail yesterday and 15 on the road today, and Im feeling very optimistic for San Diego on the 16th.

In keeping with my all-over-the-place training plan been having some good interval workouts.

10x400 on 6:00 to 6:30 pace, with 9-10/minute pace jogging for 200 between

And now 4x1-mile at 5k race pace with straight goddamn walking between for 3 minutes. Wanted to puke on the last one. (6;45 to 7:10 pace today)

So looking at my first 70.3 and 26.2 before too long and here I am just working on speed \:D

Ok not really. Still on vacation and just squeezing a workout in.

I'm definitely going to do more of these though. Feelz bad man

I'm in the first of two weeks of taper for my race on the 17th.

I think I'm just going to cruise along for this one (my first marathon) just to have a good experience with no specific goal in mind and get a good idea how the full 26.2 feels.
Then I've got 6 weeks to recover before my 2nd marathon on Feb 27th where I'm gonna give my all or die trying to BQ. I figure that way if I go too hard & die at mile 22, at least I'll have my first experience was a positive one.

Feeling pretty good, feels like I'm kinda/mostly ready I think... in theory.

You're around 1:20 in a half right? I figure you're looking at sub 3 in a 26.2? Maybe not until you get some racing experience at that distance to right? You sound fit enough to do it!

Ill be happy if I make sub 17 min, but I felt like 2-3 months is an awful long time to only get to that speed.. I guess not. Its just real discouraging when people you know show up, havent done shit for exercise all year and bust out a 15min 2 mile. Such bs

Ill do some speed runs and step up my days a week, maybe 4-5.. I just dont see myself having the ambition to run every day. I want it but not that bad. FWIW im 6'2", 185lbs, no fucks given on diet (until the week of the test). I usually lose 5-10lbs during this running period so im sure that helps with speed too. Now to work on the pushups


A month ago, I couldnt run a mile non stop.. Today I did two with a time of 19:07. Gotta knock off another two mins with 4-5 weeks to go.

I wish! My new PR a month ago was 1:27ish. I think maybe if the running gods are kind I could do something around 3:00, but that's probably dreaming. I shouldn't let my dreams just be dreams... or something

cool, im sure you'll get there based on the runs I see you doing all the time heh. I certainly wouldnt know but i assume to go sub 3h your half needs to be a bit closer to 1:20 or thereabouts..


also on a sidenote if there's a group for naturally un-gifted runners that has to be me. I was always DFL in like everything as a kid. The fat kids would beat me in sprints [and most of the chicks], wasnt until HS that I started becoming "average" at best but I wouldn't know since I was always in the water and the only running I did was under great protest [and I'd usually manage to skip it]

I possess zero actual 100/200/400 potential but I imagine among my AG peers I'd do fine now since most of them have spent the last 20 years doing not much of anything. So still slow [slower no doubt on these], but not as sad as most of my peers hah. #aimhigh

This week's marathon training was brutal. After last Saturday's 20 miler I hit the gym the next morning for strength and light cardio. Should have just stayed home and recovered. Ended up REALLY sore all week. So much in fact that I took Thursday and Friday off.

The good news is that the downtime seemed to help. Felt a little stiff for today's 16 miler. But after settling in by mile 2, I kicked into higher gear and finished strong. Body feels good... no severe stiffness like earlier in the week.

So now I go into peak week with a 7 mile tempo on Monday, a moderate 8-9 miler Weds, and a 22 miler Saturday. Goal is to do a race pace run and finish around 3:20:xx. If I succeed, I feel I have a good chance at a sub-4hr at LA. Woot!

I went into this one just wanting to finish somewhere around 3:30, I figured + or - about 10 mins and I'd be happy.

The net uphill was harder than I expected up through mile 12 or so, I was already starting to feel it around mile 8-9.

At ~12 miles I started feeling a blister forming on my left foot, which proved to get worse and worse. By mile 16 I started having to remove my shoe, adjust/snug-up my sock, then get going again about every 0.5-1.5 miles or so. The pain was incredible (it felt like running with a sharp rock in my shoe), but I wasn't willing to DNF so I kept going and doing the "remove shoe" game through to the end.
Not sure why it gave me so much trouble, the socks I used had been completely fine in the 20 mile training runs, so it must be pace-related. Guess I'll continue my eternal sock search.

Finished things out just under 3:27 somewhere, so I'm totally happy with the results. Now to recover, train a bit, then see if I can break that time in my next full in 6 weeks ${deity} help me.

Nice job man, especially for your first. BQ just around the corner for sure.

Wrapped up marathon training with a 22 miler on the beach. Nice weather and flat course all but guaranteed a solid run. Things felt great until about mile 16 when mild fatigue set in.

By mile 19 I was definitely feeling drained. But I took the forum's advice and "embraced the suck" lol. I was fortunate to have one of the coaches there to keep me on pace. Just focused on breathing and staying relaxed. It was a good mental breakthrough to know I could run "fast" when totally fatigued. Just don't know if I have the mental resiliency to do that another 4.2 miles.

GPS was slightly off but total time was 20 miles @ ~3:20. With LA's hills I'm not sure if I'm ready to break 4 hrs. But I suspect it's good enough for a sub-4:10 PR if the weather stays cool.

4 weeks and counting...

Definitely a great debut performance SJ...especially considering all the blister stops you had to make. That's definitely something to get figured out cause there's nothing worse than small shit completely unrelated to your fitness fucking up your race. \:\)

I had a pretty good race at the San Diego 50 miler on Saturday. I went into it with a goal of a 50 mile PR (previous was 9:07 at American River in 2014) and as low in the 8's as a I could get. My dad was doing the marathon, which started an hour later so catching him near the finish was also something I was hoping for.

The course is an out and back, with lots of flat running through the orange groves and farmland, then transitions to rolling stuff around Lake Hodges and finally a few miles of good climbs around the 25 mile turnaround point.

I started out feeling fantastic since it was a beautiful morning and the temps were perfect...chilly, but not cold enoug to wear more than my singlet. Lots of single track till mile 5 so I had to do a bit of ducking and jiving to find an open spot that matched my pace. I was hitting all miles in the mid 8's so I thought it might be a little fast, but it felt easy so I just rolled with it. Aid stations were about 5 miles apart, so I just carried one bottle with my pockets stuffed with Tailwind. Before I knew it I was at the mile 10 station and cruised under the 15 freeway and luckily saw a line port o John right as my stomach started rumbling. A minute later and I was feeling a bit lighter. \:D

The area around Lake Hodges was pretty scenic and a nice rolling terrain that was a nice change from all the flat stuff. I was pretty much by myself through these miles except for one guy in a blue shirt who was always about a 1/4 mile ahead of me. I would end up chasing him for 45 miles.

The course drops into another trail that goes through some fancy ranches where my brother tells me lots of SD Chargers live. I was still feeling good, legs were getting a little fatigued, but with 30 miles to go I did my best to just ignore it. As I approached the turnaround, I started counting people coming back towards me. Hit the turn in 3:56 and I figured out I was in 20th. My goal from that point was to catch as many people as I could. Ive done enough of these races now that I know I'm pretty good at not slowing down as much as others around me, so I thought I could move up at least a few places. This was the point that I finally put my music on and that was a huge boost after 4 hours of just listening to the thoughts in my head.

It got a little warm over the next miles so I started pounding my salt tabs and drinking lots of Coke at the AS's and drinking a full bottle of water between them. In the end it was never an issue and I only ever felt a few twinges of cramps in my quads.

Just before the mile 40 AS I found Lisa and the kids as well as my sister in law. They had lots of snacks for me but nothing looked good other than the slurpee they'd brought. They'd brought me one at Quicksiler 100k last year and it tasted like heaven, so it was an awesome treat. If counted the people I'd passed up till then and thought I was in 11th or so. I spent a minute or so with them, then hustled out of there. The AS was less than a mile from there and they confirmed I was in 11th and encouraged me to go get #10. Honestly so wasn't feeling very ambitious at that point....and I just wanted to get the next flat monotonous 5 mile section over with. I started a series of "run till the Garmin beeps at a mile, then walk for 2 tenths of a mile. This worked well and I was still keeping my pace sub 10.
I finally hit the last AS with 5 miles to go, which is at the base of Raptor Ridge...the only hill in the first part of the course. One of the volunteers was actually a guy I ran 30 miles of Javelina with back in October. He told me #10 had just left a minute before and that he wasn't looking too good and to go get him. That was all the motivation I needed. I tossed back 4 salt pills and two cups of Coke and took off out of there.
Finally caught the guy in the blue shirt and fell in behind him as we climbed up the ridge. We chatted for a bit and he was indeed hurting. It was his first ultra and said he knew I would eventually catch him because whenever he looked back he'd see me and I always looked composed. This was a huge compliment and gave me a boost. I thanked him for being my rabbit and made a quick pass and power hiked my way to the top. From there you can actually see the finish 4 miles away, and it was all downhill and flat to get there. I cruised down the single track to the valley floor and tried to keep it together. At a road crossing with 2 miles to go all of my family was waiting for me so I checked to make sure that guy wasn't on my heels, then stopped for 45 seconds to chug a cherry Coke and get some hugs. They told me my sister in law was running with my dad and had passed through a little while before. I was ecstatic to hear that my dad was going to finish his first long trail race!
I passed by the dairy farm a mile out then turned along the orange grove. At the last turn with a 1/4 mile to go I found my dad and SIL slowly making their way to the finish. I pulled up there and decided to walk it in with my dad. #11 was nowhere in sight and an extra minute or two in my time was no big deal. Crossing that line together was awesome. I was pretty spent, but not completely destroyed. The RD gave me my medal, a beer glass and handed me an award for 1st in my 40-49 age group and also confirmed 10th overall, 8th male. My time was 8:23...a 45 minute PR. I was content, to say the least.
We immediately drove back to my brothers house and I ate an entire large Dominos pizza. \:D
