So after pacing my brother through the last 10 miles of the American River 50 miler, I've become obsessed with trail running and ultras. It was such an eye opening experience. I plan on doing that race next year, but in the mean time will be looking for a local trail race to do before the San diego RnR marathon in June.
Was he doing it as a qualifier for the WS100?

I signed up for the Brooklyn half in May and started training a few weeks ago. I normally run about 8 miles a week. Now that I've kicked it up to 15 miles a week (and changed shoes) I now have shin splints. I've never had them before and they suck!

Do you find running in a more barefoot style shoe a bit awkward at first?
Last year I started running with the Nike + 2 (or whatever the hell its called) and found it odd to strike on my midfoot rather than my heel. This year I'm running with the Saucony Kinavara 2 (below) which has less of a heel drop and after running in them for a few weeks my calves are still sore after every single run.

TBH, I'd feel like a wanker saying it anywhere but here, but all those distance runs during the marathon training made 13.1 miles really seem like no big deal. I mean it was a tough effort but I was never intimidated by it. I'm sure it's the same for you with the tri training.
Side note, I've been running in Brooks Launch, which I've loved. I decide to try the Brooks Pure Flow, which are a bit lighter - they were great! Responsive, fairly cushy, fast. (I had gone to the store to look at the Pure Connect, which is more minimal, but the toe box was WAY too narrow.) I'm way too heavy to go barefoot on pavement but I really like the spread of fairly flat shoes like the Brooks Pure and NB minimus lines.

Nabbed my first podium yesterday. 2nd place AG finish in a local 10k with a 40:40. Pretty stoked.
Damn good work!

Can't wait to get out and give them a shot in the morning. I was doing the minimalist thing last year until I got hurt and just can't get back into it (get frustrated that I can only run a mile or so in them before I'm sore). Am excited to get out and get my mileage back up with these.

I did this "Quarry Crusher" race this weekend. It was BRUTAL. I'm normally good with hills and on normal rollers, I pass people, so I thought I could take advantage. In the end... EVERYONE walked. Most painful race of my life. The downhill was tough too because it was just a matter of how much do you want to open up your stride vs. how scared are you to fall (it was a bit gravelly). In the end I did okay taking 9th out of around 180 runners, chip time 27:54 for a 3.72 mile run.

Question:
So this winter I got into running on the treadmill...as the weather has gotten nicer I have moved this new found hobby to the great outdoors...mostly running mild trails around town.
Anyway, I am feeling good and have slimmed down quite a bit, not to mention my legs have completely changed shape (g-unit says for the better).
But my question is about form...is there a right way to run?
I'm not getting aches or anything...but just curious.
Any tips/tricks quick little adjustments you can make on the fly to make sure you are 'doing it right'?
