Ok guys, let me know what you think:

As of Today, November 7th, I have run a total of 70.9 miles since mid-July. Ive ran in the Race for the Cure 5k on October 11th in 32:06, and am scheduled to run in another 5k a week from tomorrow. Im aiming for a sub-30:00 time. Now, on Thanksgiving day there is a 10k race through Cincinnati, my home town. Ill be up there for Thanksgiving break and would really enjoy doing a race up there me thinks. Now, my question to you guys is do you think, if I dedicated myself, I could be physically prepared for basically running twice the distance Im used to in a matter of 3 weeks and change? Im never dead tired after my ~3 mile runs, and know I could go 4 or 5 miles now with how I am with a few walks here and there but I do NOT want to over-exert myself and take three steps backwards after taking two steps forward. If I can do this without training too hard and hurting myself, I will. Id love the challenge, but something tells me 6.2 is a MUCH longer run than what Im accustomed to, not even considering the distance. What are y'alls thoughts? I trust all you guys, well... a lot even though Ive never met a one of you. So yea, hit me.

Thanks,
Matt

2.5 miles in 25:53 today. It was about 50* outside and I had on my running shorts, shoes, UA Cold Gear long sleeve mock, and a 3/4 sleeve t-shirt. It was nice running in the cold for once, although Im sure Ill get sick of it before too long; I envy you Vegas runners. I can't wait for my 5k on Sunday!

Ok, doubling your usual mileage isn't that easy. Although, I must say, you are doing well. I understand you haven't ran for a long time, but I do know one thing Matt...you have a lot of heart. Even though you only have approx. 2 weeks before you run the 10k, slightly increasing your mileage will allow you to be psychologically fit. Do not try to get to 6 miles before the race. That will make you sore and probably won't allow you to do the 10k race.

My suggestion to you is to get to 4.5 or 5 miles at a slower pace the Sunday before the race. The weekdays leading to the race just do 3-4 milers up until Thursday (which should just be a 2 miler or some cross-training). If you feel you MUST workout (I'd rather rest completely, this way you have 48 hours of complete rest) on the Friday before race day, do some sort of minor cross-training, a elliptical machine or a bike for 30 mins at a comfortable speed. The idea is to not stress your muscle up until the day of the 10k, that day you will have to go balls out and go for broke (maybe use nothing but heart). I have faith in you, I think you will do fine.

I will use my recent 26.2 mile race in NYC. The most I had ever ran was 18 miles. The reason for the shorter runs was because I honestly didn't have the time. Training for a marathon is a lot of work and requires a lot of time; time in which this married college student and working man doesn't have. So what did I do? I worked on intervals and did 13 miles regularly. I never reached 26.2 until race day. That day I reached 26.2 and all of its glory. So can you.

It is a good idea to train appropriately before a race, but I don't see anything wrong with testing yourself every once in while. Sure, I would have had a better time in the marathon if I trained correctly but my idea is to finish and I believe that is your idea too.

Hey, no problem. Listen with running and other endurance sports you will end reaching 'walls'. The idea is to break them. You can always break them physically with training but sometimes you need to break mentally first. There are times when I know that I am capable in running certain distance but I am just terrified of them. When I get like that I have to say to myself, "What are you afraid of?" Make believe that 10k is just an abstract number. I remeber back in Jan.07 2 miles was a big deal. I remember seeing Drew and Cierrecart talk about their 10 mile runs. I would say to myself, "How the fuck do they do it?". It is all about walls and breaking them. I would reach my first 4 miles even if I had to walk the last .50 miles.

I think you can do the 10k without stopping or walking. Even if you have to jog the last mile.

Welp, just got back from a so-so run. Did 3.0 miles in a miserable 36:00. After the first ten minutes I found myself walking and just not having much energy at all. Chalk that up to not eating much thus far, but at least I was out there adding distance. And Flaco, I highly doubt Id be able to run the 10k without stopping as I can't even make a 5k without stopping (if I push it, I can run about 20min at once). Today was the most distance for the week, but it just did not, "feel" good, and Im sure you all know how I mean. I just wasn't into the run really. Oh well, until tomorrow! \:\) I have such a love/hate relationship with this sport.

Well, on days I feel up to it I can. Today I just felt bad all the way around. My very first 5k I did in 32:06, so Im hoping to be sub-30 this coming Sunday when I run in my second one. Im not too worried since I put in a good bit of mileage since the first race. As long as my legs feel good that day, Ill be good to go. \:\) AND, it's at 3pm, so I dont have to worry about getting up at 6 and freezing my balls off either, which is nice since Im NOT a morning person at all.
