So I have a half 2 weeks from sunday, 6 weeks after my full.
I had to take a week off due to back problems and I have been doing nothing but speed work.
I plan on doing 14-15 this sunday but other than that I'm going to just keep doing intervals, tempo runs and hills.
We'll see how it goes.

So after pacing my brother through the last 10 miles of the American River 50 miler, I've become obsessed with trail running and ultras. It was such an eye opening experience. I plan on doing that race next year, but in the mean time will be looking for a local trail race to do before the San diego RnR marathon in June.

Was he doing it as a qualifier for the WS100?

Yeah, along with about 10 people in the running group he coaches.

He actually had two tickets in the lottery for WS this year, but didn't get picked.

I signed up for the Brooklyn half in May and started training a few weeks ago. I normally run about 8 miles a week. Now that I've kicked it up to 15 miles a week (and changed shoes) I now have shin splints. I've never had them before and they suck!

Finally grabbed some new shoes yesterday

Im trying out some more "barefoot" style, much less cushioning than most shoes out there.(although it doesnt translate in the pic the sole is pretty thin)and the orange is way crazier
I got them pretty cheap so whatever.

Ill see how it goes. Already did a 3k on them last night. The shoes are really light. My cardio is fine right now (since I swim) so that was not an issue..but getting used to the pounding again will take a little holding back. I could easily bang out a decent run but dont need to hurt any tendons etc from too much pounding to quickly. I havent done any running in about a yr.

Do you find running in a more barefoot style shoe a bit awkward at first?

Last year I started running with the Nike + 2 (or whatever the hell its called) and found it odd to strike on my midfoot rather than my heel. This year I'm running with the Saucony Kinavara 2 (below) which has less of a heel drop and after running in them for a few weeks my calves are still sore after every single run.

Well Ive only done the one run and just took it somewhat easy. My legs are certainly a bit sore today but Ill see how it progresses. Probably a combo of the different style shoe and not used to the pounding.

I did try and practice landing more mid foot for a km or two...something I normally do in a sprint but not so much on longer runs.

That looks like a great shoe.

Done two more runs since. So far seems ok. Just typical "i havent run in ages" pain so far.

my calves are doing just fine. shins and other tendons are a bit sore.

Just checkin' in... PR'd yesterday in the half (1:31:43) and now I'm preparing for the race of my life on Saturday.

This will be the Moe's "Burrito Dash". Run 2 miles, eat a (smallish) burrito, yell "Welcome to Moe's!", and then run the last 1.1 miles. I'm not worried about puking or anything (it's a 400 calorie burrito) but I'm wondering how long it will take me to catch my breath enough so that I can eat the burrito.

Still, I'm looking forward to it! There's a crazy purse ($2000 for 1st, $1000 for 2nd, $500 for 3rd) but I think that purse is going to bring in some serious competition.

Thanks - it was actually my first thought when the clock came into view! "Did I beat that goofy tattoo'd CSI bastard?"

TBH, I'd feel like a wanker saying it anywhere but here, but all those distance runs during the marathon training made 13.1 miles really seem like no big deal. I mean it was a tough effort but I was never intimidated by it. I'm sure it's the same for you with the tri training.

Side note, I've been running in Brooks Launch, which I've loved. I decide to try the Brooks Pure Flow, which are a bit lighter - they were great! Responsive, fairly cushy, fast. (I had gone to the store to look at the Pure Connect, which is more minimal, but the toe box was WAY too narrow.) I'm way too heavy to go barefoot on pavement but I really like the spread of fairly flat shoes like the Brooks Pure and NB minimus lines.

Yeah....I remember thinking in my last marathon, at the halfway point..."if I was mart I'd have just signed up for the half and I'd be done and feeling fantastic right now."

I love the half distance. It's long enough to be a challenge, but short enough that you can really run it hard. You're right...once you've run a full or two, 13.1 just isn't a big deal mentally.

I've heard a lot of good things about that whole Brooks Pure line...might have to try them out. I did my last half in my Kswiss racing flats that are only 6oz and man it makes a difference in foot speed and turnover. Only problem is the legs take a bit of a beating at that distance and speed with such a thin sole.

Third goal for the year coming up this saturday. Local 10k with a pretty big turnout. My goal is to go sub 42, but if I have a good day I think I can go sub 40:00, which based on last years results, would put me in top 3 for my AG....which would be awesome.

From what I hear it was unusually hot in Boston today, and times from the pros on down reflect that. A buddy of mine qualified with a 2:59, and ran a 4:45 today.

Ran the Burrito Dash 5k in 21:33 this mornin'. Eating the burrito was a BITCH! You're out of breath and it was pretty dry. Burrito was at the 2 mile mark, I fully caught my breath at the stop, so I set back out real fast (6 minute range). But after about 500 yards I started to have to puke. Actually had to walk for about 20 seconds, then picked up and jogged through the last stretch.

I ran a 10 mile race this morning. Finished in 1:07:53, averaged about a 6:46 mile. I did the same race last year at 1:12:xx. I could have done a little better but I was afraid of blowing up to early. I came in 12 out of 117 in my AG and 64 out of just over 1500 over all.

I'll put up the garmin link when I upload it

Will be signing up for my first marathon this week. It is the St. Jude's in Memphis the first weekend of December, so plenty of time to train.

I've run a few half marathons now and they have been fine. I'm not sure I'm excited yet about the full, though.

Just got a pair of these for $71 out the door. Already marked down, additional 20% off, and a $50 gift card from Christmas.

Nike Air Max+ 2012

Can't wait to get out and give them a shot in the morning. I was doing the minimalist thing last year until I got hurt and just can't get back into it (get frustrated that I can only run a mile or so in them before I'm sore). Am excited to get out and get my mileage back up with these.

Great work Duc, Lessthanmike, and Mr. Mom!

I did this "Quarry Crusher" race this weekend. It was BRUTAL. I'm normally good with hills and on normal rollers, I pass people, so I thought I could take advantage. In the end... EVERYONE walked. Most painful race of my life. The downhill was tough too because it was just a matter of how much do you want to open up your stride vs. how scared are you to fall (it was a bit gravelly). In the end I did okay taking 9th out of around 180 runners, chip time 27:54 for a 3.72 mile run.

550 feet of gain in 1.5 miles, with much steeper parts locally:

Question:

So this winter I got into running on the treadmill...as the weather has gotten nicer I have moved this new found hobby to the great outdoors...mostly running mild trails around town.

Anyway, I am feeling good and have slimmed down quite a bit, not to mention my legs have completely changed shape (g-unit says for the better).

But my question is about form...is there a right way to run?

I'm not getting aches or anything...but just curious.

Any tips/tricks quick little adjustments you can make on the fly to make sure you are 'doing it right'?

You've probably heard this from 40 people, but the marathon is a real wake up call compared to the half. Don't skimp on the long training runs. Also, if you're anything like me, you're going to lose speed from the marathon training. I have a friend who runs a lot of marathons and I always wondered why she wasn't faster through her 5k faces, considering she puts on 70 miles a week... now I know.
