History: factory thick rust-proofing on day one, then annual Krown applications after the 5th year. Past few yrs switched to Reg's instead, annually.
The car's been taking a pretty bad beating the past couple of years ... This year has been the worst ... There's also rust spots along the inner door sill plate area on almost all of the doors
WWCSID for these visible rust spots? Should I:
- use medium grit sand paper, then fine, then touchup paint? (Use electrical tape to mask off?) That's all the materials I got... I even tried some cotton soaked in CLR and let em sit, didn't work
- Clean it, then just use touch-up paint over it, and don't touch. Can't delay the inevitable at all.
- ???
As it's a 15 year old car, I'm ok with some patchy-look on the doors, if it'll kinda stop this rust...
I think keeping the vehicle out in the freezing cold, plus regular $2 car washes kept it pretty good ... But with the new home, it's had a garage ... This was the 2nd winter she's been kept in a garage, which may have caused the rusting to speed up ...

Yup parking it in the garage is the worst in winter. My 17yr old similar rust spots and it's never been rust proofed.
That's all surface rust so super easy to get rid of. Use MASKING tape and then sand till rust is gone and then use touch up paint. until the rust comes right back in a few months
So what do you suggest since you were so informative.

Get a rag with wd40 and wipe the rust off ... Clean it more and seal the shit as a temp fix.

90% of times of my car's parked life, it's been in the garage. And in warm garages before this house. I had this car since year 2000 (98 EL), and if I had taken those rubber seals off when the car was fresh, I think I would have very clean rear panels. I do have rust around rear quarter panels like every other Honda, but compare to other Civics and ELs, it's pretty clean. And I used to dunk my car in water to launch the watercraft.
If parking in the garage in winter is the worst for rust, those rust bucket Civics out there must have parked in the garage and were soaked in salt water every night.
[/quote]
You dunking your car in FRESH water is actually a good thing so I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Salt + warm Temps + wet = rust. Not sure how that is hard to understand. I'm not saying all cars will rust due to parking indoors, however it isn't helping that's for sure.

porschetr, do you know the approx temp of your garage(s) during the winter?
Does the snow thaw in there or is it still on the car the next morning?
There are so many variables with rust vs. storage indoor/outdoor that it's hard to really narrow it down to one thing.
I think driving in snow/salt does more damage than anything, the car constantly being wet as an example compared to a car that spends more time sitting instead of being covered in slush all the time. Just a thought.
furball/porschetr, what's the mileage on your cars?
I park in a garage at home and at work, no plans to park outside below freezing

My garage is detached from the house so its a few degrees above what outside is so nothing melts in winter.

The rest of the car looks fine. I have pits and chips all over the front hood, particularly the lip of the hood, but I've cleaned those, and touched them up with paint, so while it looks like shit, it's not rusting.
It's an '01 EL, 327km. Just yesterday the speedometer got stuck at 80km/h ... Almost got back to the future.... I've reset the power to the cluster, and for now, seems to be working again...
Why the need for more pics? That's the extent of the rust that's 'visible'. Driver-side door A-pillar is rusted to shit, near the mirror, as well as spots along the door sill plate...

Various bulbs are starting to burn out, so I'm starting to learn how to remove portions of the dash and shit ... Had to change the Cruise Control bulb a number of times over the years, the [D] green bulb in the cluster twice, the light for the odometer reading, and it looks like my rear defrost night light is dead... Not sure if I want to start busting out the front centre console for 1 fucking bulb ...

It doesn't work like that, he has to run that by the unicorn first. She has subtly hinted that he drives a heap (re: assumed he drove bimma, benz, o bently), so maybe she will allow the upgrade. Best of luck furball.

Why WD40? I tried leaving some cotton soaked with CLR on the spots for a few hours, didn't do a thing ... Get a rag with wd40 and wipe the rust off ... Clean it more and seal the shit as a temp fix.
But wd 40 will, just try it. I did this to my beater accord.
