So my TV is starting to go snowy. It's a few years old so I figure now is a good time to replace. Honestly, I'm not really interested in all this 4k, hdr, curved etc. I'd prefer something that's built well and looks good. 1080p is fine for me as I'm not interested in changing all my gear to go to 4k. I have a pioneer elite amp that does all the switching so going to 4k means changing that too, plus my Rogers box, plus new BD player = fuck that.
Do smart tvs play x265 these days? Mine is a plasma and isn't a smart TV. I'm using a wdtv box (old I know) to play my downloaded movies atm. It's been great as it plays everything and even plays TrueHD and DTS-HD beautifully but no x265.
My ideal replacement would be 60-65",smart, 1080p, play x265, and less than $2k out the door.

Ya but 4k is like not happening any time soon. I'm not changing my amplifier as I like it as is. I'm not huge into this TV tech shit. I get the future proofing idea but this is more of a short term purchase. The TV I replacing I got from Wayne a 3 or 4 years ago and LOTS has changed in that time. I'm looking at the same time horizon again.
Back to the x265 playback tho. If I buy new anyone know if smart tvs can play it natively?

You're totally missing the point. You said you can spend $2k. I'm saying for that kind of money don't buy a shitty lcd when it costs almost the same. Just because it's 4k doesn't mean you need to have 4k content. The tv will upscale automatically and does a good job at it.
Not sure why you think you need to change any of your current equipment. You don't need to. And yes the LG will play x265.

I'd say a smart phone is worth the 1k+ premium considering its capabilities, not sure about a TV.

I'm still using a 42" Panny plasma in the bedroom and a 46" Sony LCD in the family room. The plasma is from 2006, and the LCD is from 2007. I have no plans to replace either until they die. I'm not a home theatre snob though and probably can't tell the difference between most of the tech.

I ask myself the same question to why people buy cars so often. I wonder if they are filling up their driveway w/ cars or something? or every parking lot needs a car?

we only have 1 tv in our house - been using it for 11 years now (42" LG) -
not investing in any new electronics until the boy gets older - in case he smashes this one up doing something stupid.

Ah so there are people who rock tv's forever RE: Oled - are there not burn in issues, and also issues of longevity? The whole tech is based on organic compounds. oled brightness decays over time.
I wonder if lcd actually lasts longer...

I was rocking a 27" Sony Trinitron CRT circa 2000 (as a secondary tv) up until last year Bought it with my first full-time pay
S/O was spending more time upstairs as she likes to blast her notebook/tv while I'm studying/working at the kitchen table...
So we moved the (3 yr old) LG 55" 3D LCD SmartTV to bedroom, and got a new 65" 4k LED SmartTV. I don't imagine another one, or an upgrade, for the next 10 years, unless these break.

I didn't find anything. There were a couple of 65" deals but when it came time to pull the trigger I realized I didn't want to spend $1500.
Now I'm hitting kijiji for a decent 60-65" 1080p used. Hopefully can get something sub $1k
