Haha...no kidding.

I used them in my first two Ironman races, but after that I just couldnt stand them anymore. I switched to Sport Beans and Gatorade chews which work well. I really like ultras though....freaking smorgasborg every 5 or 6 miles. Thats all the solid fuel I need.

I love ultra aid station spreads too...and I hear it's even more feast-like in Europe "would you care for mustard on your Iberian ham sandwich??"



He ate like 30-40 gels that day. Just kept stuffing the empty packets into his sleeves or shorts. I don't mind gels but I'm impressed by his ability to take that many down!

FWIW--Honey Stinger Waffles are excellent energy in a small, easily eaten/digested form. I eat them on the bike all of the time and their size/shape would be very conducive to long runs, IMHO.

Strawberry and Honey are my two favorite flavors.

I'm a little bummed. Got the race update for Bootlegger 50k, and because it's a USATF championship race, no headphones are allowed. I haven't worn them in any of my trail races before, but I was kind of looking forward to having some tunes for this one since it's not a huge turnout. Oh well...it'll just be me and my suffering. : laugh1:

That sucks. I ran my first few races without headphones to take in the experience. But now I like arranging songs so each few tracks start/end around my desired pace.

I have literally never ran with headphones before, in fact I scoffed at the headphone runners.
On sunday I went out for a longish run on some trails that I run all the time and was really not looking forward to it.
I decided what the heck...Ill bring some tunes.
I dont know if it was the tunes but I had an awesome run and really enjoyed it.
May be doing it more often.

Yeah, sometimes it's just nice to be able to rock out with something...or listen to a podcast. They're not allowed in triathlons either, but those races usually have so many people in them, the people watching is enough to keep your mind occupied. I had them with me at my first 50k with plans of using it the second half, but the thing died on me before I could put them on.

I'm just being a bitch because tapering and an achilliies that has decided to give me some issues 4 days before the race.

What kind of plan do you guys recommend for a 50k? I took the last two weeks off and think I am ready to start training again. Race is in march so I have about 4 months and was thinking about just doing a marathon program with a few extra weekly miles towards the end. Maybe a 23-24 miles for the longest run?

Really hoping I can stick with something as I already missed a half marathon I was going to do for fun due to some knee issues then had a nagging calf injury that I think is finally gone.

I haven't worn headphones while running for a couple years now, but I may look into changing that for JFK. I'm expecting a flat and "fast" sufferfest, so some rockin tunes may be just the ticket. Trail/mountain stuff I like taking in the scenery and sounds of nature, but the canal path in Maryland won't offer much of either

I only run with headphones in now. And like Ironmom, I love listening to podcasts. Check out RadioLab or ThisAmericanLife podcasts if you like science/story-telling.

I have gotten so used to it, that running without headphones is uncomfortable. The wind blowing in my ears is so loud, lol.

A marathon plan will work fine for your first 50k. I'd do as many of the runs on the trails though.

I am going to try and do most of the short runs on a dirt maintnace road and longer runs hopefully on some mountain bike trails. I live in a flat area so finding hills may be limited to a freeway overpass and short hills at the mountbike park. I need to look at the race elevation to see how bad it is.

The last marathon I did was a road race and had less marathon runners than that video. It did have some half and relay runners mixed in but even that probably put it at 250 or less. You don't have to do a large race tons of smaller marathons.

Edit just looked at the last local marathon had under 100 runners. Top guy smoked everyone with a 2:29 2nd place was 35 minutes behind and 3rd was almost a full hour behind.

I like road races because there is fairly consistent standard across the races, which is great for setting goals and really racing. I will qualify for Boston, I will run a sub 18:00 5k, and I will do a 1:25 1/2 Mary. \:D

My girlfriend is trying to get me to run more road stuff because she likes it but I'm being a stubborn ass about the whole thing. It's too hard to run fast up here, I might as well be looking at prettier scenery.

I met a guy at UW who would do 500 flights a day, five days a week, on one of these. I sort of want to start something similar but I don't think there's a single fucking stairmaster machine in this entire town

My knees hurt just looking at that stairclimber.

Meanwhile, I overshot Ironmom's 5k Challenge from early this year:



First real run this year from 3 weeks of couch-to-5k. I'm still not going to push it too much, but the curiosity was killing me.

Felt decent. Knees were a little sore in the beginning. Cardio was fine because of the bike mileage base. I foamrolled the living hell out of my IT bands and quads post-run, too.

I hope I can keep this up and avoid injury. 30+ miles on the bike tomorrow...

Oh man, you've got it all wrong! I've never felt more bad ass then when I'd be at the gym on campus working on either the Stairmaster or a treadmill set at 15% incline. Here I am, surrounded by beautiful Wisconsin sorority girls who are mostly texting or reading trashy magazines, tackling the midwestern vert as hard as I could. By the end of an hour the machine would be completely drenched, like soaked through, and my feet would be literally squishing in my shoes on every step. If I was on the treadmill I'd start to slip and slide from too much sweat on the belt. It was positively absurd and I loved it

I'm currently posting from my sleazy little motel room in Boulder City NV, about a mile from the start of the Bootlegger 50k tomorrow. Saw Hal Koerner and his wife and baby at the running store for check in ...of course I was too chicken to say hi. Got here pretty early so I went and saw Thor in IMAX 3D, and drove up to check out the start of the course. Jesus Christ it's going to be a beautiful run.

Met a kid there from PA who's 23 and doing the race as part of a cross country road trip, dirtbag style. Really nice guy...made me think back fondly on my younger years. \:\)

Goal for tomorrow is to try and sneak in under 5 hours. Ultrasignup has me predicted with a 5:06. This is similar elevation to the last 50k I did where I went 4:47, but this looks like it might be a little more technical. I think my fitness for the trails is quite a bit better now though...so well see.

I'll report back tomorrow. \:\)

Cant wait to hear Chris's race report!

I ended up changing up my run this morning, did 4x5 mile hill repeats. Not as much elevation as I wanted but felt awesome!
Best part was my splits. 45:59, 45:58, 45:25 and 46:34.

Damn, that's a solid workout!! You must be feeling pretty good about Quad Dipsea at this point!

The WS lottery is up to 1,488 folks and I think the age breakdown is interesting:

<20: 0
20s: 112
30s: 555
40s: 556
50s: 237
60s: 27
70s: 1

When the application period ends I'm going to dump all the age/gender info into a spreadsheet so I can compare it to the 2015 lottery under the new rules. My guess: dropping 50s from the qualifying list reduces overall number of applicants, hurting those on the extreme ends of the spectrum disproportionally. 30s and 40s become even more dominant next year, but we'll see!

I'm putting a ton of pressure on myself to finally finish a 100 in 2014 so I can get into the 2015 lottery with three tickets. I like my odds for WS in 2015 if that happens

Whew! What a race!

I think my goal was a little ambitious going into this race, because I had no real idea of what the course was going to be like, other than the advertised 2-loop, 4200ish feet of elevation, and desert terrain. I based my goal on my time at Way Too Cool back in March...which in comparison I know realize was like a carpet lined ribbon.

Got to the start line about 6:30, 50k start at 7am. Pretty good turnout...there were 100 pre registered and I could see quite a few checking in that morning, so I'm guessing 120? You can see on the map that its was basically 2 big loops up and over and back around a large peak in the desert south of Vegas. This are was pretty much my backyard for 4 years of my youth, and I spent hours and hours wandering that desert, so it was actually a pretty emotional and nostalgic experience for me. Start was a long downhill on a paved/dirt road before dumping onto a really sandy and gravelly trail that led us to the first big climb, 1000 feet over 2 miles. Lots of switchbacks, rock stepups etc. First time around I ran it all at an easy pace. After dropping down the backside over some crazy technical stuff, you hit the first aid station. First time I ran through it since it was cool and my bottle was still mostly full. I was in a pretty close group of about 5 guys and a girl, and we'd leapfrog here and there. The next section to the aid was this long meandering trail out through the desert. No big climbs, but super rocky, lots of dry wash crossings, etc. I was able to pretty much autopilot this section though, and I was feeling good. Hit the next aid, grabbed some Coke, chips and filled up my bottle and continued on. There was a little climb back over the peak, then a gradual descent (but with a constant up and down as you'd climb each little gully and contour), before a long stretch on the out and back, and a final 2 miles to the start.

Hit the midway point in 2:25, which was on target for a 5 hour finish, but I knew that there was no way I would be able to maintain that pace on the second loop. By that point we were all pretty spread out, and I had to pay close attention to all the course ribbons since there are dozens and dozens of trails crisscrossing this area. Up the big climb again, this time I alternated running and power hiking. My left achilies was starting to ache a little bit, and my feet were sore, but my stomach, lungs and everything else were feeling fine. I started that meandering section after the first aid station all alone, and didn't see another person for the next 7 miles or so. It seemed to freaking drag on! So many times I'd start to panic thinking I'd missed a turn or something. I finally hit that last aid station before the last sustained climb and I started getting that "I'm just done with this thing!" feeling. I made it up and over and ended up falling in behind a kid that had been in that initial group, and I could tell he was feeling as bad, if not worse than I was, and since I didnt have the energy to make a pass, I just stayed a few yards back. Every one of those little ditches where you'd drop 5 or 6 feet, then have to get back up the other side would just kill my legs. We cruised down the out and back to the last aid station, and I just refilled and went. He was spending a bit more time, so I was able to get a minute and a half lead on him. I could smell the barn at that point, so I just muscled through those last 2 miles, made the turn onto the dirt road and cruised on home. Ian Torrence handed me my custom mason jar, and I got a "way to go man" from dreamy Hal Koerner, which made my day. \:D My time was 5:37, and from what I saw posted before I left, I was 38th overall.

My legs were DONE! No cramping or anything, just an overall fatigue and soreness that actually felt pretty good. I'd ran it as hard (and smart) as I could, so I'm totally satisfied with my performance. Took a quick rinse at the outdoor shower they have at the bike park bathrooms, then got changed and ordered up my free bbq brisket sandwich from the gourmet foodtruck they had stationed at the finish. Best post race meal ever! I didnt stay long since I had to drive 3 hours out to a dry lake bed in the california desert to meet my sons Boy Scout troop for camping and rocket launching.

It was a great race through and through. Beautifully tough course, great marking, fantastic swag, and a generally awesome vibe. I'll be back to do this next year for sure!
