Why is the answer always miata? now perhaps i can offer some insight. I picked up a miata 2 weeks ago.
Test drove a bunch of cars while looking for a summer toy - aw11 sc, del sol, clean b swapped eg's, dc2 r, bb4, nd miata and na miata.
Of alllllllllllll the options, settled on the na miata. My first test drive was a beat up '90 with crank nose wobble. It had no balls, was slower than my chr and yet was such an experience. It is a car that feels like no other - it feels like what it's meant to be - a car made for nothing more than driving joy. There's no isolation from anything, everything is direct as hell (there aren't even shift linkages in the shifter...), the visibility etc...the whole combination yields an experience that is unlike any other car i've driven. You can drive it slow and still smile simply because of all the feedback, the mechanical nature of everything and the size. So ok. it feels special. what else? Of course it's a drivers car, and is fun as hell to wring out.
My car came with clapped out 11 year old, dry rotted tires....so that was fun. The car goes sideways all the time - under braking, under throttle, under everything. It is fantastic fun to counter steer every corner on the street without needing to break the speed limit XDDDD
On track, i've never driven a car that had such a balance - it is not stable under braking, and it is not stable under throttle. It always wants to go sideways, and as a result, you're always on this fine edge of balancing the car with every input. You may be going slow, but it is involving and fun as hell. Most cars are stable af under braking - not this. Most cars are stable under throttle unless you really attempt to hoon it - not this. It is easily manipulated to put it sideways. It'll understeer if you make it. It'll slide if you make it. It'll hold its line if you make it (though this is arguably more difficult to do on dry rotted tires XD).
TLDR, test drove a 90 miata. had such a ball, bought a high spec 97 miata with torsen. low mileage (less than 100k), mint and amazing. Wheels weigh 10lbs and is nuts. Now has newer all seasons on it. Too grippy and took away some of the sideways fun city of north york just became drift jam.

With the need to accommodate a baby seat, may have to go for S3 or Golf R. A 1 or 2 series BMW May also be ok.
Owning German without warranty seems dicey.
Extra garage would solve a lot of problems

they are a blast yeah...still can't drive unless a spec car though lol. dunno why.
what DC2 did you find to actually drive?! lol
why no used s2k? there was a yellow dc2 with riced out mugen parts listed for 26k. i gave him an offer sans all his mugen bits. he ended up flaking and playing some games...and then he wanted way more money than his initial asking price - despite the car having been in an 8k accident per carfax (which he attempted to dispute as inaccurate btw).........wat. S2k - drove an s2k (ap1) before when my dad had it. really fun car, but those never appealed to me. always liked the na miata, but never owned one. soo i did it. miata gives all of the vibes of an s2k without the need to go as fast. can do more crazy things under the speed limit XDDD Plus, finding roll bars and that sort of thing for s2k isn't easy. and without one, it isn't exactly safe for track work.
ah true.
and L E L at the cuck dc2 owner

(M)Z3 swwwwooooonnn. Though the S54 motor better than S52.
A2B those cars you listed are all way to small, I have 2x kids seats in the back of the S4 (not a huge car i find now lol, used to think it was!) and it's tight...even with the 1x kid seat it was.
I mean it is do-able for your situation i guess but if baby #2 comes or as #1 grows and you wanna put shit in the car for day trips, it'll get tight real quick.
The IS is dog slow. Just wish I had a more engaging car when I do drive.
Maybe when and if child number 2 comes, get a beater van like prev gen Odyessy and find a good condition 1 series manual convertible for the days I know I don’t need to haul kids around.
Garage space may still be an issue. All a pipe dream. I really need more parking space before anything else.

I'd never put a baby seat in a 2-door car. In the event of an accident; I don't want more challenges getting my child out. Even daily runs to and from daycare getting a child into a child seat in a coupe is a PITA (esp. on your back).
Maybe consider a used IS-F? Those are decently priced now.

BTW of that list (s3, golf r, 2 series bmw), the s3/golf r is going to be way more fun. 2 series is bland in comparison, and offers zero steering feel (if that matters). It also offers a very long travel, mush brake pedal (if that matters). Golf R is actually entertaining and quite frantic when put in sport mode or whatever it's called. Plus, it comes in stick (if that matters).

The S3 is an option as it has a trunk (no auto). The 2 series just kinda fits in that price range.
Good point about 2 door cars and accidents @ S2k...
In the perfect world, I would have a garage to store a summer toy which can be 2 doors, convertible, manual, and fun.

Sucks that you can't appreciate a car beyond the transmission. You're missing out on a lot of really good cars with that mindset.
Shifting gears with 3 pedals is part of the fun. If all I wanted was a pure numbers matching I would have bought a 991 GT3. Just saying.

After driving a few pdk/dsg cars I have to say for my next fun car I am kinda leaning away from the manual. Maybe it's grass is greener type shit, this is a tough one /first world problems.

What do you feel is more fun with an auto? If it was a track rat no doubt auto is the way to go. But as a weekend/toy car no way. Part of the experience is to have a car completely different from the daily beater and to me the transmission is a huge part of it.
Think about econo shitboxes. They are more “fun” to drive vs. Auto. I don’t give a shit how fast PDK/DSG shifts, it gives zero satisfaction unless fingering around the wheel is your thing lol
