Those guys are actually locals to me. They have been working on that car for years. A couple years ago it had trouble making it down the track in one piece. Now it is one of the more consistent cars you see at the track.

Its a 4g63 and I think a powerglyde. It was tuned by a friend of mine then they went to a domestic shop and got a bit more power out of it. I can make a call and see what is in it if you really want to know.
I always wondered what it would really take to make those cars good on more than just the surface. Vague steering, loose suspension, and a motor which is a joke. Looked so good on the surface though: widebody, 4cyl turbo, recaro buckets. I still kinda miss my 88 TSi.

I didnt know you had one!
Mine was new and it felt great. I loved that car. Now it's not amazing in any way,but back then it was a great car for the price.
At the end of the day,its a RWD turbo car with big fender flares and the possibility for an easy 4G63 swap. That's what makes them cool now,not the OEM central fuel injection.
The car was very successful for such a short production run:

The Starion was equally successful offroad, and found victory in Group A World Rally Championships and Asia Pacific Rally Championships, during 1987 and 1988. An all wheel drive version of the Starion was also produced for Group B specifications (one of the few Japanese automobile manufacturers to enter this class), but after an encouraging start as a prototype was not homologated before the FIA banned Group B cars for safety reasons.

Even though they were apparently horribly unreliable (even for mitsu standards) I still want one. They just scream chest hair and baby blue leisure suits. Show up to an 80's party in one of those and you bet your balls your taking all the MILF's home that you can handle. Can anybody say home wrecker?
It was my first car (that I actually owned) I lost my license with it in my first year of ownership and couldnt afford it anymore. So I dont know if it was unreliable or not. But I can say that the injection system on it was a mess compared to later stuff, but alot of injection stuff was messy at the time (mid-late 80s).
