I want something decent that collapses pretty small so it's not a giant PITA when traveling. Camera is Nikon D7000. Recommendations? I don't want to spend $200 but I figure there's something decent out there above the standard $20-30 units.

What kind of lenses do you usually have on your D7000? This is something to consider in regards to your tripod.

Here's a good tripod thread. I'm a big believer in spending a little bit more buying it once than saving and getting something inadequate. What kind of head are you looking for? The thread below has lots of head talk as well.

Either a 50mm or 18-140

How flexible are you with your budget? I ask because for a little bit more, you'll be able to get a great head and legs that should last you a long while.

Light weight, cheap legs will either fall apart, not be big enough for what you need it for, come with a cheap head you'll have to replace anyways, or be too unstable during any kind of slight wind.

Something like these legs: https://www.manfrotto.us/190-go-aluminum-4-section-tripod-with-twist-locks-black-mt190goa4tb
with this head: https://www.manfrotto.us/manfrotto-mhxpr...iction-controls

will last you a long, long while. The only consideration are the legs, are they going to be tall enough? Those are a little bit lower than 5 feet.

The gear head is far superior than a ball head. They're easier to adjust and, depending on which ball head you compare it to, a whole lot more stable. I wish I knew that when I got my ball head. I didn't like it.

I can't swing that much for a setup right now.

Where will you be using this tripod? Indoors, outdoors? What kind of photography?

Sunpak has some OK CF legs. I don't have any recs on a head, I like ball heads for general use though. I've had the same Kirk head for 15 years which makes its $400 price pretty reasonable overall.

I think sub $200, and small for travel, is going to be difficult to find something really stable and secure. I spent that for a Slik that's pretty hefty, and it's great for location/studio stuff but not for traveling. I bought an Induro BH0 and it's pretty solid, but I do wish I'd gone bigger. I guess, it comes down to acceptability. Where do you draw the line. I've got it good, there's a Samy's about 5 minutes from me, and Calumet was close when they were still around too, so I can try out a lot of different brands first hand. The BH0 for example, it settles just the tiniest bit when I lock it down, but when I've got the 105 macro mounted and everything is framed up just right and i slowly release the camera, and it dips a little more and the framing is no longer just right, well that's a pain in the ass. I don't know if it gets better than that though.... I really like the Induro legs though, with the twist locks. Not sure why I like those better than levers like Manfrotto, but I do. Though, the carbon Induro legs are pretty pricey when you start getting into the stouter stuff.
