Can someone give me some pointers on how to make these images a little "crisper"? Both seem to be a little overexposed as well as blurry around the edges of the face. These were taken with my Rebel XSi and 50mm 1.8 lens on monochrome setting and a red lens filter. Can what I'm asking for be achieved without purchasing new hardware? Is there something I can do in the settings the next time?

First thing you need to do is shoot with the sun behind you, not in front of you. If you can't, then make sure you're using your flash as fill to lighten up her face a bit.
As for your camera settings, turn all that silly shit off (remove the filter as well) and do that in post. If you were going for the background to be blurry and her to be in focus, put the camera on Av, set the aperture you want (lower number = more blur but less depth of field) and put the rest on auto (ISO, WB, etc).
This coming from a relative newb to the camera game, I'm sure a few more guys will chime in with some more advice.

No, step 1 is to remove the monochrome setting and stop using the red filter.

Not always true. You can shoot with the sun in front of you and get that "rimlight" type shot on the hair with some fill from a reflector or flash.

The filter has completely fucked the local contrast on the people. You might be able to salvage it with something like Silver Efex or maybe with some channel mixing. They look pretty far gone though. I'm sure a PS wizard could work with them.

In this case it would have helped tremendously no?

Yeah shoot in AV (or tv if you're shooting action), raw (or raw+jpg), with no filters for a while. And start playing with your raw files in cs6 or lightroom. It's complicated enough just mastering that.

Oh, and in the future, NEVER SHOOT IN B&W IN CAMERA. That conversion can be done 10x better in LR or PS. You can replicate any filter after the shot, too.

Either would have helped since it was his camera settings + filter that fucked things up.
