There's an article in the new Bicycling mag about rim depth and width, since new road rims seem to be going wider, and the effects on aerodynamics, etc. What is the width of the carbons you have now?

Yeah, wider is becoming the norm...like the HEd C2. Not sure on the actual measurement on mine, but they're just a normal width. Not the most aero out there, but better than a boxed rim.

first real 'crit' today (more of a circuit - 2.6mi course) - finished with group - but what a dumbass I was and burned too many matches hauling ass up the nasty hill @ start/finish line.

only a little bit of road racing for me this year, racing mountain bike instead. today was my first race at Iron Hill, in Newark, DE. Im racing the Mid-Atlantic Super Series aka MASS. its a 8 race xc series, best 6 races count towards your series total. today was the first race since the other ones got rained out and rescheduled. so today i won the cat 3 16-29 year old group and netted 115 points. race was 7 miles, time was 45 minutes 52 seconds. beat 2nd place by 1:30. woot woot!

Bout to pull the trigger on a cheap road bike. What are some of the essentials out the door? Back when I used to MTB, the water bottle, pump, pack, and lock were the things I remember having on the bike. Don't know that I need the pump with this as I'll be within range of the house and the wife can come get me. Thoughts?

water bottles/cages, pump, multitool, spare tube for whatever size wheel and a sram master link. That is what i take with me on every ride even if i'm only going to the trails that are 10 minutes from home.

Most of what I read online is geared towards flipping it and causing the handle bars to raise. When I flip mine, it does the opposite. Is that what you were saying to do?

you are generally tucked down further so it isn't an issue and holding majority of weight with core

20 mile ride this morning in 20-30mph wind sucked. I hate living in an area that 10mph wind is normal and is often in the 20's. Anybody else ride in an area that is always windy.

yes but consider it simulated hills in this semi-flat hell we live in, if anything the wind has helped me with doing cadence work.

Yesterday morning was the first time I'd ever ridden a road bike. 7 miles in 34 minutes...ugh.

Flipped the stem last night, got the clip-ins put on today and went out tonight to gave it another shot. Even after running 2.5 miles this morning, I rode the same 7 miles in 29 min, so I am pleased (winds were stronger and it was 20 degrees hotter tonight).

I imagine I can only get better! I'm going to try to increase the distance in the morning and then take Sunday off completely (I say that now, we'll see how much of an itch I have Sunday morning). The cycling was supposed to be in between running days, not supplement them.

24 hour race coming up in not even a month so I want to get my endurance up rather than just being lightning quick at 1.5 hour races and then crashing.

Did 37 miles today with 3900' on some of michigans most technical singletrack, i don't want to see switchbacks or rocks/roots for at least a week!

we are doing an 8 person team so it really doesn't require much endruance. We used to do it with 4 people and it was killer. No time to sleep and so rough stopping and starting again. No idea how guys do teams of 2 or solo, just crazy.

got my first win in the local crit series yesterday, pretty pumped... and apparently my heart can beat at 194bpm.

needless to say a small breakaway formed and chase wasn't really wanting to work, so bridged my big ass up to them and we began to rotate the work. my turn to pull came up with about 3/4 lap to go on bell lap, so just went apeshit and pulled away.

Another good weekend on the mountain bike. 2 hours yesterday doing some hill repeats/intervals and just casual riding, today went to Michigan and did 51 miles and 4500' elevation in 3 hours 50 minutes. We'll see if the endurance riding helps at this weeks 16mile pedal mashing XC race.

Ouch. Pics of aftermath?

I had my XC race a couple days ago, didn't turn out as I had hoped. Mass start for all groups straight into a climb. Not wanting to redline on a cold start I didn't mash for the top of the hill. This of course meant that a bunch of guys who cannot keep their pace got in near the front and I ended up with 10-12 guys in front of me going into the singletrack. What a fucking nightmare. Full on stops in the technical singletrack, all riders dismounting for rock sections, the guys in front just kept pulling further and further away while I was stuck. By the end of the first lap I was able to get by everyone and ended up riding alone for 5 more laps. Top 3 riders ended up working together and I had no chance of catching them. Ended up finishing nearly 2.5 minutes behind the leader. Next time I know to mash it to the front even if it means puking blood. All in good fun though.
