I’ve been doing some work to the car lately. Parts have been piling up on the shelf, and I decided to install them all at the same time, so I can feel better about driving my heap. This being me, this of course included handling upgrades, and for the first time since almost 2 years, I installed power upgrades.
Cooling: Even though it’s not summer yet, I’m still looking to get rid of the issues or improve the cooling system while I have time. I decided while I have time, I should shield off the radiator. The car had stock shields, but they were flimsy and plastic, barely doing their job. The new ones were made out of aluminum, and any space between the shield, radiator core support, and ac condenser was filled with foam. Hopefully this will improve the high speed cooling that much more
Transmission: Stock T5 with 181k miles on it… yeah, that about sums it up. Took it to a shop near by to have it rebuilt. They’ve replaced all the syncros, 2nd gear, and 4 bearings. Feels great now.
Suspension: It seems like I have touched everything on the suspension front other than front end bushings. The front still felt very sloppy, so it was time to take care of business. I got lucky, and found a new set of Maximum Motorsports control arms for a good bit less than retail. They came with urethane bushings, and they are also a good 8 pounds a side lighter than factory ones.
I’ve also noticed that the sway bar bushings were shot, so those were replaced as well. While I was there, I’ve changed the sway bar end links to shorter ones, to compensate for the drop, and also to give the brake duct hose a little more room to run (about an inch of extra space).
This brings us to the hose. The old hose I had was very expensive, and very fragile. It was a single ply hose, so at extreme angles, which on a mustang it has to be, the coils inside would move around, hose would lose its shape, and rub through. The new hose is dual ply, and also almost half the cost of the old one. It’s only good for about 350F, but I don’t think that will be a problem really.
Engine work: I finally decided that it was time to install the intake manifold on the car. While I was there, I also got a suggestion that I might as well do roller rockers while I’m there, so since they were pretty cheap, I went and bought those as well. I took the car to FSR Motorsports Creations for the baseline dyno run. Initial dyno put down the peak number of 192 whp, which is ok for the motor with 186k miles on it. After this was done, roller rockers, intake manifold and throttle body were installed, with a lot of snags (cross-threaded fitting in the intake for heater pipe, rockers did not clear stock valve covers, fox valve cover oil filler was right in the path of the throttle body, distributor bushings were busted). After everything was said and done, I took the car back to FSR Motorsports Creations, and redynoed it. Final pull resulted in 220whp, which makes it a 28whp gain. The best part about the modifications was that I lost absolutely nothing on the bottom end power, and peak power has moved significantly, not to mention that I have a lot more power band to work with on the track.

I always read your posts.
I like that you bought a platform and stuck with it (what cars did you own before these,I dont know why,but I forget what they were)?
I dig that you are tracking a high mileage domestic and it's not blowing up,because the general public would recommend against that.
I like that you are doing it on a budget as well.
I hope you beat that T5 though,I have a scar on my brow from the bellhousing when the tranny rolled off the jack (my first car and I was bulletproof) and split my skin open. I learned what "literally" seeing red was. lol

Dan, I'm running a Fluidyne distributor, and I have been for quite some time. Mustangs just run hot, so this is something that I have to deal with.

Nice work!
I have the Griggs front end stuff on my car now, but one of the C/C plates was defective -- it knocks and binds. I'd send it back but they were huge dicks to deal with so I'll probably just deal with it and buy new parts from Maximum Motorsports down the road.
I hope to get the torque arm on later this year though, it's too damn cold and wet to work on it in the car port these days.

Thanks. Max, be careful mixing Griggs stuff with MM stuff. Griggs suspension has different roll centers than Maximum Motorsports. If you keep the K member and Panhard (or watts link) the same, you should be OK. I'm gonna stick to Maximum Motorsports. I'm already more than half way there anyway.

Hustler, I made the shields myself. I did some measuring with the tape, made a sketch, cut it out of thin sheet of aluminum, and trimmed it while it was on the car, if necessary, which in my case really wasn't. I was surprised how close it was. Here is the template I did for my car. It's all in millimeters.
Drive shaft thing is not the studs, but the cable. It's hanging too low at times, so it rubs on the drive shaft. I already had floor pan welded right where the emergency brake bracket is, because a friend of mine ripped it.

Lol, no chance. That's more than I can afford. Just a car that's in for some work over at FSR. The wiring on that car is totally jacked.
Yeah, the car drives great. Feels a lot more responsive, lost most of the slop from the front. Feels almost, dare I say it, like a bimmer.

Go with Koni yellows man. Even single adjustables like the ones I've got are good for a LOT of coil-over spring rate. Trust me, it's nice to have them on full soft when put putting it around town.

Actually this post comes back at a great time. I snagged a SN95 Cobra 9 months back and I am slowly going over the car and doing the same things that you did to yours 7 years ago. synchros are fucked 4th gear sometimes grinds control arm bushings and ball joints are worn

That's cool. Did you get the 5.0 or the 32v Cobra? Congrats on the purchase btw, they are neat cars that can be quick with not a lot spent in them. I however have gone way overboard with mine. Here is what it looks like now.

Well, SN95 Cobra could be both Pushrod 5.0 (94-95 240hp) or DOHC 4.6 (96-98 305hp). If it's the DOHC, it will blow the new edge GT away pretty easily. Combine that with better suspension, and much better brakes on the Cobra, and overall 96-98 Cobra is a much better rounded package than a later GT. Having said that, the 99-04 GTs respond incredibly well to boost, meaning that even the basic Kenny Bell kit with exhaust and bolt-ons will crack 400rwhp. Basic suspension packages are pretty cheap, and effective, Cobra brakes can be bought for literally 200 dollars, if you don't mind not having a cobra logo on them (Mach 1 brakes). I would recommend 01+, because they have much better (stronger and easier shifting) transmission.
