My (edit - meant to write great-uncle) great-grandfather was in World War I. I was in Port Perry last week at an amazing military bookstore, and I got his complete war record from a book I bought there.
Posting this in the Ontario section because it wouldn't mean anything to the Americans on the rest of the board!
Check out the battles he was involved in:
C.E., Lieut., Dec. 1915; France, June 1916, 2nd Army Tps.
Coy.; 3rd Fd. Coy.; 3rd Bn., C.E.; Capt., A/Major; Ypres, Somme, Vimy,
Hill 70, Passchendaele, Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, etc.; Wounded, Vimy,
Apl. 1917; M.C., Vimy, Apl. 21, 1917.

Damn, i dont know what to say. I have 3 cousins in the Canadian reserve and one up in Afgan right now. But ...damn you grandfather is badass...

For those interested, here's a shadowbox I made with my great-uncle's stuff. It has a picture of him, his enlistment papers, there's a piece of trench art (a letter opener from Ypres).
And I made one for my great-grandfather's stuff. I haven't gotten his record yet. He won the military medal, far left, top. It's the non-comissioned officer's equivalent of the MC. I don't know what he did to receive it.
Lower right is a civilian medal he got in 1915 for pushing a boy out of the way of an army lorry. He got hit by the truck instead, and got this medal for bravery.
Top right is the French Croix de Guerre. He was wounded, gassed and shellshocked, but he still went back to the front anyway, as a stretcherbearer this time, which is how he got that one.

But ya.......that is a pretty impressive set of medals that your great gramps got. Much respect indeed!
