Fiancee's desktop has been acting up for a while. The screen would randomly go black. Whether she's doing something or it's in idle state.

I first thought it was the power settings kicking in and turning off the monitor but that wasn't the case. Then I thought it might be the video card on it's way out but one time she was listening to music and it happened. Music stopped, no sound and nothing could be done (i.e. control>alt>delete; nothing responding unless rebooted). If it was the vid card she would still be able to hear the music correct? Just nothing on the monitor.

So now I'm stumped. Processor, motherboard, PSU???

Was thinking that too. Will open it up later to check/clean.

Any way to check if it is the memory? But how can the memory start failing now?

To test the memory, try using MemTest.

Win32 version

Bootable ISO

Could it be a sign of imminent hard drive failure?

Vista?

Screen flickering black? THeres a patch for this. Also, update your video driver.

As for it locking up, you're on your own.. temperatures, drivers, cables, hard drive.. possibilities are endless.

Ok, ran memtest overnight and reported no errors. Did about 8500%. The comp. acted up a lot yesterday night by blacking out 3 times almost one after the other with minimal time after xp loads the desktop.

I might try picking up a cheap vid card. What`s a reasonable PCI Express just for mainly surfing the net that has DVI?
