Earlier this summer I bought a 2006 Mustang GT because I needed a car and it was the cheapest one on Marketplace.





It's silver-on-porno-red, manual, high mileage (247k kms / 153k mi), and the only mods were (past tense!) 4.10 gears and an aluminum one-piece driveshaft. Perfect. Every other S197 I saw for sale was either ridiculously expensive or they looked like they fell out of a Cervini's catalog. Or both.

What's a Mustang without blocks to put it on? I bought a bunch of 2x4s at Home Depot to wheel cribs and cut them out:



My oldest asked me, "Dad, how did you know how many boards to buy?"

Because, son, I did the math.



But I didn't do it well enough because after I built these cribs I had enough left over to make an entire second set. And, of course, I was In The Zone and pre-cut all the wood first. So. I have a lot of spare 10" and 14" pieces, none-the-less.

So I got it up on blocks:



Those of you with keen eyesight (likely no one here since we're all old now) will notice that the cribs the car is on are shorter than the ones in the previous picture. That's because I tried to put them up on the tall cribs and the call fell off.

Yeah.

After I got done changing my pants I figured I should shorten them a bit. Besides, 9" cribs are tall enough.

Turns out a 20 year old Mustang with 250k kms feels pretty haggard. Time to fix that!

I bought, well, everything. I have:

  • Vorshlag coilovers (Bilstiens + FRPP P-springs + camber plates)
  • Whiteline control arm relocation brackets
  • Whiteline adjustable rear control arms (upper and lower)
  • Whiteline adjustable panhard rod
  • Whiteline panhard support
  • Whiteline front sway bar
  • New FRPP front control arms
  • New outer tie rods, poly upper control arm bushing
  • Cams (Comp 127200, their biggest no-spring-required cams)
  • Charge motion delete plates
  • BBK long tubes and X-pipe
  • Combination sewer pipe / cold air intake
  • Gameboy tuner
  • Other various wear and tear items (timing chain, cam phasers, water pump, lifters, motor mounts, ...)


The suspension stuff I'll tackle, the engine stuff I don't trust myself to do so I'll get a local shop to handle it. Hell, I can't even jack up a car without it falling off. Wife's words, not mine.

So, time to get cracking!

I finished the rear suspension last weekend:



And started on the fronts:



Hoping to get the fronts finished this weekend. I've also ordered wheels (SVE DHP1 in Titanium Graphite) and tires (Contintenal ExtremeContact Sport 02 in 285/35R19). Should be fun.

I had some drama putting in the control arm relocation brackets. I should have run a tap through a couple of the holes in the axle housing first before putting the bolts in. But I didn't, and so the bolt snapped.

Then I tried to get it out with an easy-out, and the easy out snapped.



I ended up using a diamond-tipped hole saw to get the easy-out out then drilled the rest of the bolt out. Wharrgarbl.

... and not looking any lower. lol. damnit.

anyways, it drives a bajillion times better, it feels brand new.

Speed parts go on next week, as do tires. Yay!

Did I say "next week"? Because I meant "next month".

I thought about DIY'ing the parts install but I sure am glad I didn't because:
  • Half the exhaust studs had rusted
  • The harmonic balancer was hosed
  • The last time the spark plugs were done, one of the plugs wasn't entirely removed ( ) and so they forced a new plug in which jammed the shell of the original plug and the new plug and fused them and the car was thiiiiis close to having to get a new head ( ). He said it took four broken easy outs and having to weld a nut to the remains of the spark plug shell to get it out. Glad it wasn't me.


So. Car made 355whp / 327 wtq after parts install and tuning. Pretty healthy for a 4.6 with bolt-ons and dinky-ass cams



I got the new wheels on



And oh boy is it fun to drive. Right in time for winter.
