We have one of these as the wife learned about it, so have been using it the past ... 2 mths or so. https://www.phonesoap.com/

Thanks for tip re: Germ Guardian ... we have 3 humidifiers and ... it's been a bitch to clean them. Maybe I'll pick up one of those.

re: PhoneSoap, the wife saw an fb thead and jumped on the bandwagon of disinfecting her phone etc.

re: UV-C and furnaces ... Thought about making the air in the home 'cleaner' ... even pre-COVID, but never got around ... Just wondering who's done this, efficacy, etc...

(I have a little electric toothbrush head cleaner that uses UV light as well )

I argue with the wife that this whole UV-C thing is about DECREASING the amount of virus by killing it, by %. i.e. you'd have to let it bathe in UV-C for like 24 hours or something to really really kill 99.9% of viruses ... (or whatever time it takes.).

i.e. putting your phone into that UV-C thing for 10 mins ain't going to make it hospital-grade clean, or wiping it down with a Clorox wipe.

Boss told us today that the company may be letting a skeleton staff back in the office this summer. Things like one person per elevator means there really can't be too many people in there at once. They may open the doors a little wider in the fall, but it's quite possible most of us will be at home until next year.

Is your pay still at 100%?

Lots of people I talked to at bigger companies/former employers are taking paycuts. Some have been gradual like 10% in April, another 5% coming in May.

Some as drastic as 25% right out of the gate since this started.

for us i am a bit surpried how tight things are getting, for how 'well' things usually are for our Co.

-raises that were due in May now cut (no surprises, fair enough)
-xmas bonus due for july in question (prob will be cut, but maybe not as it's based on last years results so waiting on this)
-pay cuts across the board, 2% for me then it goes 3.5 and 5 up the ladder, ouch, but it's temporary...no end date in sight yet
-we're going into wk 3 of forced 1-day off work, unpaid, can't use vacay to get paid, again TBD
-they have begun packaging out senior staff already, 1-3 a week it seems
-POSSIBLE future cut measures to be taken tbd......

factory guys heading back May 11th so that's good for them. prob very slow production with the safety measure in place, not to mention a shitton of unsold cars both at dealers and at autoports/compounds across canada.

otherwise, can't complain. working from home is working out ok though. hard as fuck with 2 lil guys running amok but we're making it work.

been filling in/assistin with our CR dept's lately given the insane backlog too lol.

dunno how many of the 2021 yellow special ed. ones we're getting but they'll make it here eventually.

I've been thinking about the accrued vacation everyone is shoring up, as there's nowhere to go ...

The 'forced-use' of vacation, 4-day work-weeks, makes sense as a way to burn that time, as well as the no-bonus

So far I haven't heard anything about the cancellation/reduction of our $2k/yr/pp education budget...

At a crown corp I used to work at .... they mandated a 20% reduction in fees that contractors can charge, so that kinda sucks.

I opted for half days. Wife is a teacher and shes doing the online learning for the kids and thats a feat in itself so she can't look after the youngest while shes helping answer questions for kids etc, so in a way its a nice little vacation as well as working from home on things I can (even though my job isn't a typical work from home, but I'm reinventing lol)

i was able to sell 10 days back and throw that $$ into RRSP. Parked it all in $$$ market. I am not sure how low the market will go. Will throw it back in the market once there looks to be an upswing. Don't want $$$ in money market if there is going to be a depression or inflation from the world printing money.

What are restaurants looking like in GTA now? You still seeing a lot of them shifting to take out/pick up? I follow the big independent guys, but I'm more curious as to what your neighbourhood places are doing. What about the chains?

Seems like a very odd mix.

Some chains are doing take out only others are permanently closed even though they did/can do take out. I don't understand it.

I've noticed a couple of independent places who originally closed during the lockdown are now open for delivery/pickup. I really hope the churrasqueira around the corner from me re-opens soon.

i was at a local neighborhood Pho place. They had 4 ppl in there waiting. Pho was ringing off the hook but probably no where close to what their revenue would be if they had dine in.

i support some small local food spots in the area and they seem to sell out fairly quickly which is nice to see.

i guess its a balance of how much food can you put out and make money on vs how much supply you need to order so youre not wasting anything

but yes i agree that many more could be offering delivery or curbside pickup to pay for some bills but for whatever reason are choosing not to.

We have 2 of our 4 locations open from 4-8 Tuesday to Saturday, and we're only doing about 5% of the revenue we would normally be doing. No location running profitably. Our phones were busy from 330-730.

I can't imagine these big boxes in plazas in the GTA can keep paying these rents for that long. Mom and pop shops should make it, they'll just suffer their own pay in the short run.

They can't, I keep talking to my guys that run commercial Class A + some independent strip malls. From the restaurants at the class A 50%+ are gone, not coming back and closed for good. The strip malls are fairing better, I think this is because it's usually independent smaller landlords/cheaper rent/both scrappy entrepreneur types (not franchise owners) and are working together.

Crazy to hear you are down to 5%, damn. I remember visiting one of your locations in Barrie, it was a main strip (can't remember the name of the street), place was popping and food was great but you were entirely setup for dine in. Are the government programs going to be enough to get you through?

There is a subsidy but also some just won’t pay. Gap already said it is stopping paying rent as an example. As mentioned above CF said about 25% of their base have paid. It’s not always about can’t pay it’s also a about won’t pay since it is not open / delivering returns

Just think of a big company like Best Buy if they said nah we aren’t paying this month what would a property company do? It would be short sighted to take action and the good ones will work with companies. It’s not like they would kick Best Buy out and then have it empty and find another massive retailer in that location (there isn’t many) that could fit all of the clauses and afford it to replace the BB space.

A majority have pivoted to delivery but are still getting smashed. For some odd reason Krispy Kreme is off the hook busy but for the most part it’s very small numbers for a majority of these businesses

Henry's filed for Chap 11

A friend who has a breakfast joint in Markham isn't fairing well ... about a year in, and it's a franchise, which JUST so happen to be CASH ONLY .... I think they've finally pivoted to a payment processor, but in the meantime all the cash is washed in a soapy bucket of water.

Plexiglass panels just installed ... Not sure if it'll survive.

Sucks about Henry's, but I am not sure if there is any brick and mortar business that won't follow suit, at least they are doing it early on and not wasting time trying to keep shit afloat when there is no point. If they were able to do this quick chances are these stores were already on the chopping block for some time now. I think it's a good opportunity for a lot of these retailers to cut out the low performing profit centers via restructuring and double down on their profitable locations and online. It allows many to get out of long term leases/severance liabilities at a reduced cost if they do it now under these conditions than trying to maintain status quo.
