CANNOT WAIT FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TO BE OVER. Can't run tempo runs for shit in the dark; I keep stumbling and I notice my gait is much shorter and choppier.

Cherry Blossom 10 miler is in a few weeks (first weekend of april, I think?). I was going to run it with the wife, but she wants to race it and she doesn't want me running with her, so I figure I'll go for a time trial as well. Any guesses as to what kind of time I'll put out? I genuinely have no idea what kind of race shape I'm in, as I've just been doing maintenance for the past few months...

Based on the 15 mile run at 7 minute/mile you just did, I don't see how you can't push that to 6min/mile on race day with the adrenaline pumping.

I just this mental block about 6:00. It just feels/seems so far past my abilities. I guess the only thing I can do is try and see how far I go?

Updating this thread. Still around, still running. Knocked out the LA Marathon this weekend in 3:53:53, despite 3 pit stops and tons of photos.

I've been spending more of my focus enjoying being out in the crowds vs. going by the watch. Though I might try for something semi-competitive next year as I graduate to another age bracket.

Coming up: OC Half Marathon, SD Half with Team Hoyt, and SF Half. Have a couple small tri's over the summer, and will be managing one of the Exchanges for Ragnar So Cal (heard it's a ton of fun).

Still interest with this group doing some type of Ragnar?

3 weeks until my first race of the season 20 mile of sloppy mountain trails. Should be scenic at least.
I guess if I go slow enough I'l just take lots of photos.

Ragnar would be a lot of fun. Depending on when it is, My wife and I both would be interested! We were talking the other day about wanting to do one out west; the scenery out there is just so much better.

Congrats on finishing LA! How was the course, and how did you feel?

Thanks man, I think I'd recommend Zion for this group. It's cheap and challenging, and it's all trail.

LA was awesome. It's my 6th time running. And the crowd support keeps me coming back. I imagine it's a lot like running Boston or New York, only LA has a fewer pockets of supporters until you get to Mile 18.

There are some low points on that run, like the long stretch along Hollywood with little to no shade. But the hardest part is from Mile 19.5-23.5, where you run a mild but steady uphill section. And almost all of it in direct sunlight. I hit some mild cramping there, but got ahead of it with some extra salt/electrolytes.

I finished feeling pretty strong and plenty of gas in the tank. Had I really hunkered down, I probably could have knocked out a sub-3:45. But for a competitive race, I think I'd rather do something like Mt Charleston out by Vegas. LA is simply too crowded to run fast.

What's the temperature at? Direct sun+anything over like 70 degrees is brutal.

And Zion. would. be. fucking. amazing. When is it? I've got the Chicago marathon in the fall, so I want to make sure there aren't any conflicts.

I'd liek to do a Zion Race soon. How rocky was it? I did Arches outside moab and that was tough on the ankles. All that slick rock is tough. Luckily the back half was more sand/gravel.

LA topped out at around 73 along Santa Monica Blvd. Wasn't bad overall, just warm during the last third of the race.

Zion is Ragnar's first and most popular trail race. I've never done it. But I've done Los Coyotes, which they say is the hardest trail race they have. And I didn't feel it was all that bad.

I believe Zion also has extra amenities you won't find elsewhere, like the pool and showers. We'd probably have to shoot for next year if we were serious about it. And we'd need a team of 8. Would be pretty easy to assemble if we were to consolidate funds via Venmo or Paypal.

Yeah I think it'd be easy to get a team.

Wow a pool and showers? That sounds flat out luxurious I should be down for next year! Any other takers?

I have the Cherry Blossom 10 miler this coming sunday. It's pretty flat and fast. I ran 16@6:58 pace today, will probably do a mini taper this week just to give my legs a bit of rest. We'll see how it goes I suppose

Lol, no shit. There’s a reason I don’t look at my Strava feed anymore. It’s called shame, lol.

Six years ago I ran my 5k PR with an 18:30. Yesterday I ran one and did 21:20. I guess Ill just keep going long/slow.

ah stop it; i'm quick but I'm not like insanely fast. You guys are actually one of my biggest sources of motivation; hell, you were the ones to push me to have a breakthrough last year!

And i've said it many times...I don't know that I could do ultras like you guys...it's a totally different mentality and I'm not sure I could do something like that.

Update: I've shut it down the past couple days. Left soleus has been super sore since Monday, so I've taken it easy. Hope to run a couple miles tomorrow to shake things loose. Really hoping I don't pop something on Sunday

Running 50 miles tomorrow morning.
Should be fun, first 50k are flat bike paths and then jump on trails for some rollers and then a big climb at the finish.
Feeling pretty fit so gonna go after it and see how it plays out.
Prepared to walk the last 15 or so miles if I blow up. \:D

Cross posting from Reddit:

Race information
What? Cherry Blossom 10 miler
When? April 7, 2019
How far? 10 miles
Where? Washington DC
Finish time: 1:02:39

Goals
Dream goal of sub 60 minutes, happy with anything under 63 minutes

Training
No real race specific training leading up to this race. Maintenance mileage has been 40-50 mpw, with tempo runs of 4-6 miles@6:00-6:15 pace every other week. Long runs of 15-16 miles on Sundays. Last race was Marine Corps Marathon, where I ran a 3:02:33 with the Pfitz 18/70 plan.

Pre-race
It was bad. Buses were running VERY slow, got to the race 15 minutes before gun, had to do bag check and porta-potty. Barely made the corral. I also have been struggling with a tight/strained soleus all week, so I wore a calf sleeve to help with the pain/cramping. All in all it was a very stressful start, and I had no idea what to expect regarding my performance.

Race
The beauty of the 10 miler is that it goes by quickly. The course is very flat as well, 95 ft of total elevation. The weather was perfect, 50 and cloudy with a mild breeze. Miles 1-5 flew by, but started to feel fatigued at 6; it was at this point that I started to second guess my pacing. Miles 7 and 8 were by far the hardest mentally; I was feeling the fatigue and could feel myself dropping back from the pack that I was running with. All that being said, I was consistent in my splits, and while I fell off a bit after mile 5, 6-10 were still consistent. Splits:

6:11
6:11
6:12
6:14
6:12
6:17
6:20
6:20
6:18
6:16

Finish Chip time: 1:02:39

Post-race
I ran this race hard, not really knowing how I'd fare. I have not raced a 10 miler before, as I usually focus on marathons, so I was just guessing as to what pace I should leave the gate at. I think I could have gained a little bit had I went out at a 6:15, but really I think I'm splitting hairs at this point. Given that I went into this race with no race-specific training and a strained soleus muscle, I am pretty happy with the result. I think with some more speedwork, I could get down to 60 flat. Thanks for reading!

Nice! I read somebody put the turnaround cone in the wrong spot by a few meters and it cost the (otherwise) new CR that they set this year. Sucks lol. Also great race

20 miler
3:04?
Watch said 1,300’ but supposedly it’s sold as more like 2k...

Quick q. I cramped BAD the last 2-3.
Did I?
Undertrain for the distance?
Not drink enough water?
Not get enough salt?

Any of the above, impossible to say?
ALL of the above

You have a solid base, no? Was this a race? Did you taper? I'd assume a combo of dehydration/salt and cumulative fatigue?

Not the most solid base:
Average 21/week for the year (started at like 12 tho)
~35 week for a few weeks building up to this, peak 41?)
Longest run only 14 ish though (this particularly stands out)
Add in 3-ish hours of cyclign every week

I think there's a limit to the benefit of the cycling and I'm finding it in the legs. HR was pretty low towards the end, but the legs just couldn't move. The cramps were miserable for the last .5 and for a good 15 minutes after.

Ah, I think the relatively short long run prep is the primary culprit. At the end of the day, your body needs to get used to running for that extended period of time.

Probably true, good reminder for future endeavors.

With ultras it's pretty common to not do a full length shake down, so I sort of trusted some shit I read about if you can run the metric distance you can do it. (i.e if you can run 20km, you can run 20 miles). Of course simply running a distance and attempting to run quick are different.

I still set a 30km PR since everything I've done this long before was my "forever" pace.

So I was talking with the wife about this the other night; what do you consider "fast"? We were talking about marathons specifically, and she and I had different opinions on what we classified as "fast", but I would love to get your opinions on this. This doesn't have to be purely about marathons, either.

IMHO, it's all relative. I just ran the OC Half in 1:41:36. Fast for me, slow for this group.

Lots of factors based on age, course difficulty, weather, etc. I think if you can place in the top 20% of your age group, you're quick enough.
