I think we had this discussion before; can't remember. It's about time for a replacement for our 15 y.o tanked system. Just wanted to know what everyone's opinion was, especially those that may have switched to tankless. Was it worth it? savings? benefits? problems? deals?

I think the ROI would be null for a long while and not worth it unless you have a family of 15 who shower daily \:\)

Also noted from another thread hot water takes longer to reach the faucet since it has to heat up vs already hot from the tank so you're wasting more water and waiting

Just got a new tank installed in Jan.
Thought about the tankless, but told I need to modify, this that and this, so stayed with the tank.

Thinking about tankless if/when mine is due to be replaced. I have an electrical water tank as there is no gas line near the tank. Thinking electrical tankless would save me on electrical bill but don't know energy uses to verify.

It's been a while since I looked into it so my information might be outdated, but last time I researched this going tankless was not worthwhile, between a more expensive and less reliable system, the only pro is the real estate saved by not having a tank. I don't think anyone here is dying for the 4 square feet of space.

you may be SOL

most tankless electrics draw HUGE amounts of current as the heating element has to be really strong to hear the water on demand like that. The element in the basic tank can be smaller because it takes awhile to heat up.

I think most electric tankless need 120 on average for a decent unit. Most Households have 100 amp or 200 amp service.

The idea of heating water when needed vs keeping a large tank of water heated on standby just seems ideologically more efficient. But I guess in practice the differences/efficiencies aren't so much. The numbers they toss around are ~60% for tank vs up to 96% for tankless in terms of efficiency, which is considerable, but I'm certain those numbers are on the extremes ends of the spectrum.

Where I'll probably end up saving is going from renting to owning the tank.

also note some recommend getting a water softener as well or else you could gum up the element inside. Thats an extra cost

tankless hot water tank will end up costing me too much. i contemplate world problems in the shower and will stand up there for 3 hours no problem if there's an endless supply of hot water lol.

Maybe with a shower long enough, you could cure cancer?! :P

First quote I got for tankless was:

Rinnai RU160IN $2900.00 +HST

I'm gonna guess that a tanked system will probably be about half of that?

A traditional tank is anywhere from $500-$1000, and about $300-$400 to install.

Totally not worth it. Like risky said, unless you need to save that little space. Only time I’ve run out of hot water is after my daughter took a bath in our tub (it’s probably double the capacity of a builder tub) and the wife had a long shower.

moved into the house with a tankless. its a rinnai RL75. never had a tank to compare bills so sorry no help. came from a condo with instant hot so the wait did take getting used to.
so far so good i guess. no issues since we moved in.
my only memories of tanks are from my childhood where my family would take all the hot water before i had a chance anyway...

My dad was scammed into one several years back from a door-to-door sales guys who boasted about the savings. I used the term "scammed" due to the less-than-clear payment plan he was put on which ended up costing my dad more than they had originally implied. The wait for hot water definitely takes getting used to.

If I did tankless id put in a recirculation pump. They are awesome. There's a button where you can push in anticipation of wanting hot
