I've heard that Zion is the Ragnar to do. Amazing views, solid trails and semi-modern facilities for those that care.

Los Coyotes was amazing. It's the toughest of the series with almost 1.7K vert on the first 3 miles of red loop. But the views and technical aspect of the trails were awesome. Much less fire roads and more single tracks compared to last year.

Only downside was the 35° temps at night lol.

Okay, with my first 50k being cancelled and looking back on my training I took a whole 12 hours to reflect and make a decision moving forward.

-My first thought was that I want to limit my 50k to somewhere local. I spent hundreds of dollars on a hotel room for the last night and tonight (I just came home, didn't even stay), and spent $80 on ride sharing just to get to the race start and back. If my next race gets cancelled, I don't want to be out a shit ton of cash again for nothing. Further, it was just supposed to be my wife and me going and my folks were going to watch my kids. But with the fire in Paradise/Chico, my folks had to take evacuees, and so no one could watch my kids, so we took them with us. That made for a really shitty night sleep last night because we were sharing a hotel room with 3 toddlers. Even worse, when I had to go back home early, I was then stuck with those little shits all day and they were demons. Due to all of those reasons, I am looking at races that I can drive to same day for my first ultra.

-My other thought was that I actually feel like I trained too long for this ultra, over 4 months in the end due to scheduling changes. I peaked too early (dirty warned me), and so the last 6 weeks I was trying to preserve my running pace while trying taper, and that caused me to feel like I was getting out of shape. I want a much shorter and tighter training window moving forward.

The plan:
I am going to enter the lotto for the Way too Cool 50k (not far from my home) which is March 2nd, 2019. If I get in, then my plan will be to start aggressively training over 7-8 weeks prior to the race. I don't want to taper prior to the run, because I want the 50k to be my peak training for the American River 50miler on April 6, 2019. In the meantime while I wait for the WTC 50k lotto I am going to focus on some strength training, all the running has made me feel emaciated and I have been having issues with my upper back that I think some physical therapy strength training might also help.

This is definitely aiming high, but I am in a dark place after all of this training and adrenaline for my 50k only to have it canceled as I am waiting to get my bib. Just a heart breaker. What's funny is that they gave me the shirt and pint glass, and tried to offer me the finishing medal. I refused the medal, lol, wtf am I going to do with that.

Fuck...what a day.

That sucks man. I'm sure your training would have worked out.

Either way celebrate even showing up. There's a lot of people that never get that far. It'll work out soon.

I finally accomplished my long-term goal of finishing a 15k under 1-hour today. Felt pretty good, didn't really get "hard" until mile 7 or so:

Damn, that run and Strava constantly shoving Charlie's runs in my face is incredibly motivating. Had to gut check a <8min/mi 5er today to feel right.

hey, if my runs motivate you, then I'll keep going \:\) \:\)

I worked out my training cycle for next year; it's the Pfitz 18 week plan. I combined the 70 and 85 max mpw plans and kind of created an in between that peaks at 80 mpw. Hoping for a 2:49:00.

It's crazy to me that I would peak around 60-70ish mpw for a 50 mile race, and you are peaking at 85mpw for a marathon! Your pace is just incredible man, you should be proud, I mean you are nearing the sub-5 min mile pace during training. That shit was like a world record a century ago .

yeah I'm not sure how I feel about that I was running 5:45 5k pace for intervals this past season, and they sucked bad. REALLY not looking forward to dropping that another 15 seconds

Eh, the weekly mileage may be more, but you have the mental toughness to endure 50+miles of racing. That is a totally different ballgame, and I am honestly not sure I have that in me.

I think there's two factors:
there's a ceiling to running for most folks
there's a healthy requirement for a floor for HARD training like charlie does

I think I need to get on some races ASAP. I'm really struggling for my goal for '19. I've always been a slow runner, so part of me wants to finally create some speed, but I do love the ultras.

Yeah, I really am working on speed more this training cycle. I get really competitive and want to be more towards the front of the pack. It is way more draining tho.

Chris - 750 people applied for the WTC 50k lottery this year, not sure how that compares to years before. They don't list how many they will take. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

Yeah, I think this last year was great for building a base of miles and I do prefer trail-runs to fast road runs. But now I have that base, and I won't always have the time to drive to a trail (or do 3-4 hours runs). Of course it'll be nice to not worry about needing those long runs I suppose. With kids it's sometimes hard to be gone that long at once.

When i was young I loved speed work, now I love it during but always feel tired for 24-48 hours.

Anyone else struggling to get runs in during the holidays? I thought it would be easier, but with all the family here and all the drinking it is tough.

Didn't you just sign up for a race? That always get's me moving.

It's definitely tough with short days and shit, sometimes it's ok to just get your "minimum". I definitely couldn't "train" during the holidays, but I find it's a good time to evaluate my calendar/schedule and come out the gate ready as things quiet down.

1048 according strava, but 1032 according the strava plug-in I use.
going for a short loop today.

I started the year shooting for maybe 3 miles a day/21week as a loose goal. Got pretty close and I don't feel at all bad for it. I still increased 20% over last year which was my biggest year. More importantly I grew my vert by 1/3.

Did a second 50km with not much training, did another HARD 50km, and did my first 50 miler on a hard course. I'm now increasingly confident in my running.

On top of that I had my biggest year on the bike. I looks like I'll stall at 2275 for the year.

And I got two days of ski-mo in which really stokes me. I got to both circumnavigate and summit Mt St Helen in the same season.

To 2019!

p.s. nice job getting your ass out there and even some trail. The strava "goal" is my way of self-shaming myself to hit my minimum every week.

Roberto is a Canadian member, he rides Zwift, it's a trainer app/video game that does digital racing on the bike trainer. It makes indoor bike training not suck. but it does virtual races in locations.

Dude rides like a million miles every day.

I ran 1605 miles in 2018; hoping to be well north of 2000 in 2019.

I hope to be able to run normally in 2019, otherwise switching to bike/swim as I'm fighting an Achilles thing which seems like a very tough adversary. Every time I take 4-6 weeks off and think everything is fine I'm exactly back where I was on like my third jog back. (I just took 4 weeks off and here I am again)

Anyways Strava says:
2327 biked (did my first fondo and got up Mt tam finally, just dicking around tho no workouts)
873 run
102 swum

334 hrs

All of my PRs got a year older sadly except the 70.3

I've got a boot I'm moving to when I get back into it, and may immobilize a bit more aggressively for January. If it comes around great otherwise I guess I'll just be at the beach more often. Not a bad problem to have heh.

Hitting even 500 run miles next year seems like a stretch goal sitting here injured with no known recovery method other than taking.more and more time off and hoping for the best. One thing seems to be for sure though: running on back to back days may not be possible for me any longer. I've done about 10 miles this past week and it seems like a push to slightly recovering overall. Hard to tell, and very frustrating. Ill go shopping for a new PT guy also, not had much luck historically there (I get injured enough every year to go see one, always running related)

Great job guys. And good to see this thread is still alive.

I started up Strava in April and hit 899 miles. Thinking I can do 1000+ if I train for another marathon over the winter. Thinking I'll set 1100 as my goal.

I think my biggest 2018 accomplishment has simply been avoiding injury while incrementally getting faster. All despite the limited time I can devote to running. I'm now flirting with high-6 min miles on some of my 5-8 mile runs. Not really that fast, just fast for me. \:D

Well, despite taking like 4 months off from running, I’ve been able to slowly get some fitness back and am starting to feel like a runner again. I ran 2100+ miles and almost 150k feet of gain last year.

I got picked to run the Angeles Crest 100 again in August, so that will be this years focus. I’m registered in the Solo division which means no crew and no pacers. As if the race wasn’t hard enough, lol. Either way, it’s something to dread/look forward to for the next 7 months.

Im currently signed up for my 3rd Black Canyon 100k out in AZ mid-February, and of course Way Too Cool 50k in March, but I’m thinking about the Calico 50k out in the desert the first weekend of Feb as well. It’s a great low-key race with a remote giant loop course. I haven’t run farther than 10 miles since last June though, so I don’t want to destroy myself that close to Black Canyon either.

I did my first interval workout of the year today; 6x600 meters @ 5:45 pace with 100 sec in between splits. I managed between 5:43 and 5:45 for the first 5 splits but gassed out at the last interval and finished the split at 5:52. Hurt a bit more than I am accustomed to, but that's what I get for not running intervals since October.

Feels good to be back on a regimented plan. I'm going to be alternating between interval runs and half marathon pace tempo runs every other week, with a long run on the weekends. I'm hoping to hover around 40-45 miles a week until it's time to ramp back up.
