This was mentioned on a radio program this morning and the host repeatedly mentioned that when you buy any counterfeit goods, be it DVDs, clothing or cigarettes (is that a thing or is he referring to those made by natives?) that you are supporting organized crime.

Do you feel that is accurate? Even if its some guy selling movies, do you feel its all traced back to organized crime? Well I guess it can be considered as such, but when I think of the term "organized crime" I think more of the mob/mafia/gangs etc

On the flip side, what about downloading pirated content? Does that support organized crime? You're not actually paying for the goods.

No, I'm not trying to make myself feel better, just striking up conversation (which has been rather slow lately)

I think these things have to be there. Fuck these monopolies.
One of my biggest peeves right now is how Spotify is charging 10 bux a month to access music. I've never paid for music before and don't think I will any time soon

IMO its all a scare tactic. I'm sure lots of counterfit goods are tied to organized crime but I highly doubt there's a ring of criminals recording movies with camcorders and then selling them on dvd's for $2. that's just silly. the is so much more money in other illicit activities (drugs/women etc). I'd be willing to bet most of the movies from pacific mall the shop owner torrents the movies then sells to the out of touch individuals who don't know they can do it themselves for free. Still shocks me when co-workers tell me about buying these pirated movies. I've been on IPTorrents for over 10years, almost from when they first started actually, so that where all my downloading needs come from. Have never been disappointed by that place.

I also agree with lowbudgethonda on the fucking of monopolies. I've heard "satelite" radio many years ago and fairly recently. back in the days, it really was no ads. Now, i've heard stations with ads. Its BS imo. Netflix will do the same eventually. I literally just got netflix like in January. I don't see the appeal, but then again, i'm not a TV/movie junkie or couch potato.

I've never paid for anything, but Spotify is well worth the $$$, especially if you've got Sonos in the house.

Can’t remember the last time I went to the pacific mall.
I used to there for Canada Computers but it’s everywhere now.
Then Amazon appeared.

The issue is that the counterfeit stuff isn't even that cheap.

My guess is that they're trying to pass it off as discounted originals.

^Nah, it's blatantly and proudly counterfeit.
There is simply different grade of counterfeit, and stores there are known for very well made replica product (at least for ladies apparel and accessories!)

How is this even news?

Cops raid that mall a few times over - These news seem to pop up once or twice every few years just to stir things up in the news to get attention.
