At the end of the day is 110,000 that many for Toyota?
I mean-maybe it is,because the Tundra was a flop for them, right? If it was for Camrys that would be like every 100th unit rusted....
I noted the severe rusting of the frame part. Didnt Toyota have the same issue with the Tacos?
I have an 85 and its quite the rust catalyst. Ive heard people say lots of stuff, domestic and import have issues around that time. My Mazda 626 had no rust problems, but the trans wasnt as trouble free.
Welcome back stickaz and 2000SS.

That sounds about right, but I think my 85 is a Japanese product, and I think that the Tacos were the NUMMI (Cali) plant.
Its hard to say really, but yeah-it does put into question the idea of the trucks being superior.
Although,I thought spec for spec when the current gen Tundra came out it was superior. I think GM truck owners still claimed gas mileage and torque or something. Really guessing at this point, lol.

I never bought into the idea that the Japanese knew what they were doing with full size trucks. A friend of mine had a Nissan Titan... The titan in particular seemed to me to exemplify what the Japanese trucks were. Handsome (perhaps), looked the part, Had some good go to it even (the titan's 5.6 is a great engine imo)....however, it's hard to take it serious when you get up under the thing...right away from the solid dana 44 axle.
The previous tundra struck me that way too...not that it was a horrid truck, but that it wasn't quite the truck the big 3 was putting out. It was a 7/8th scale, with a decent but not quite strong enough for real work 4.7. For those that wanted a daily driver sort of truck, it seemed fine...I even recomended one to my sister-in-law for the occasional light towing of a small boat, decent bed, off-road capability, all the things that they kind of wanted from a truck. But that's about all I see an older tundra handling.
What get's me is seemingly how overbuilt the newest tundra's are....HUGE rear axle standard with a larger 10.5" unit coming with the 5.7. Tons of power, and just big all around...it struck me like they were building more than a 1/2 ton, but not quite a 3/4 ton...more like a 5/8th ton truck.

On a related note, Chrysler just issued a recall on 1,880,427 Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare's produced b/w 1976-1980 due to excessive rusting.
This could be the death knell for Chrysler. I hope not, they just had a press release for the 2010 Viper setting a track record for a production car at Laguna Seca-beating the Devon, which is sort of a Viper too.
Today I saw that Toyota announced a 3.8 million vehicle recall campaing over the pedal sticking due to the floormats.

I thought the only real weakness with the Titan was the rear axle - while the Tundra, it's the whole non-boxed frame (I won't touch the clusterfuck interior). Funny you say that. One of the reason the early Toys are so desired by off roaders is due to having boxed frames when the competition was c-channel.
My buddy has a first gen T100. The clutch stopped functioning properly. Changed the slave. Didnt help. Changed the master. No good. Took it to Toyota. They fixed one thing,it didnt work....I think it was the pedal assy. Turns out it was the firewall that cracked! He did some searching and found out that it's so common there are DIYs for welding in your own bracing.
I still like my truck though. Stupid stuff lately though-motorized antenna (lol) inop, and something went wrong with the door lock. It gets stuck inbetween lock and unlock and the door wont shut. LOL that was a fun one to find out after an hour of browsing tools.
The current gen Tundras are like battleships with wheels. So freakin big.

That recall has been expanded to replacing the accelerator pedals on all the cars (initially they will mill them down at the dealer lmao). As well, software updates for some of the cars to kill power when brake and gas are applied while driving is said to be coming (i.e. runaway lexus on the freeway killing a family).
It turned from toyota dragging their feet, to a floormat issue, to an accelerator, floormat software issue and seems to be expanding everyday.
with respect to "is 110k that many for toyota" it essentially amounts to all the trucks they sold in the cold weather states for those years. In addition to their rust woes with the tacomas.
And the 1.2 million yaris vitz recalled this year. and the 210k lexus, the 100k matrix etc, the lawsuits regarding destroying sub par quality data. And recently getting zero point zero top safety picks from the IIHS, and losing ground in top value picks.
So they have gone from being the best for quality, value and safety to - fuck you they are the best and they haven't done anything worse than any other automaker has done.

Yeah,I think this is why Honda tends to scuttle issues under hidden TSBs instead of massive recall campaigns. So the average car buyer knows nothing, but people that are in the loop get angry.
Wow,destroying quality data? I didnt hear about that. I think it's an issue that Honda and Toyota both face due to their size. Toyota has been definately been mentioned in articles regarding that. Honda not so much, but definately in enthusiast circles.
