not so concerned about security at this point because low-income poor family with nothing to steal from, but i'm tired of seeing the random steaming pile of canine scat on my lawn and wouldn't mind finding the source so i can return to sender. so, who's using these things now and what should i look for? wired vs wireless pros vs cons?

Wired for sure unless its true wifi and not the cheap rf that anyone csn tap into (the cheapo stuff with the big antennas hanging off the back)

If your looking for something cheap yet decent quality get a 3,mp hikvision with built in sd card and record to that or upload to the cloud

I normally have hatred towards such products but for what it is and who it appeals to I have no issues as long as you know what your getting and that there are fees tagged on for the convienience factor than it's really a decent option for some.

Back to the original poster...ask yourself how likely you are to run wires if you get a wired system and by running I mean neat and tidy and not stapled to the walls \:\)

If you do want to run the wires then you have many more options and they are typically less expensive. The only systems I wouldn't consider are typical analog. The min you would want Is a TVI system which is basically digital over a coax cable or cat5 using a video balun. You can get 4ch systems with cameras and hard drives for a couple hundre bucks.

Hope that helps

We get all our stuff from Lorex. For simplicity, we run only PoE cameras so we can run cat5 cable wherever we want them.

Lorex, qsee, zmodo etc are all low end units meant to sell to home owners at a lower price point but with that you also get questionable quality and exzagerated claims. Take it with a grain of salt but you do get what you pay for.

Ring.com has a doorbell (wired, and battery-powered, gen1 only) for the cat shit scenario.

Arlo has some consumer-friendly 'wireless' ones that use CR123a batteries...

I'm considering both.

Any old webcam hooked up to a cheap PC and some free software would do the trick.

You're just trying to catch the dog pooping on your lawn after all so go the cheap route.

Arlo is shit just due to using CR123's.

Just grabbed an Arlo Q. So far not bad...Was looking into a Piper NV but I don't need the extra features. Same with the Canary.

We'll see how this turns out

+1 for everything loudsubz says

the arlo's issue is your recorded video. im pretty sure there isnt a hdd in the wireless hub unit, so if all goes to a cloud then they may ask for money to retrieve data.

get a hik vision with sd card as suggested unless you want to run a tvi (1080p) camera to a tvi-dvr.
you can find a Galaxy camera (off brand hik vision, uses same apps and everything) from places in pac mall and other small security providers.

cctv direct is on progress
galaxy head office is on warden and 14th

Biggest issue with arlo is the lag between motion detected and recording. Basically it's useless unless the subject stays within the frame after the camera picks up the movement.

Arlo Q Plus has a powered on ethernet & sdcard local storage option. I went with the normal Arlo Q as for my particular use the extra cost wasn't needed. They have a week's free of cloud storage though.

Hator they updated the software since the original. You can now update the motion detection sensitvity & audio sensitivity to your needs within the app. As well as 1080p compared to 720p.

The geo-fencing is the particular thing that swayed me to the arlo as I come & go at various times, not really on a schedule.

Wow the Arlo q is expensive for what it is and it's not even rated for outdoors unless you get the wire free unit. For that price I rather get an ip66 rated outdoor camera with true ir illumination to get good quality footage in no or low light situations. If your using an indoor camera looking through a window you have to turn ir off and rely on outdoor lighting or risk bounce back and having a washed out image.

What would you recommend for indoor that doesn't scream camera? Not a fan of the look of many of the true cameras. Looks awkward inside a home to monitor a pet imo.

Don't care about outdoor rated, just need view able from an app or browser, 1080P, wireless preferred, wired isn't a problem though, and geo-fenced. Free cloud storage is a bonus.

Doesn't use it to look outside

Picked up the 1st gen Ring.com for $180... what a hulking POS.

Returned it with the quickness. I prefer the 2nd gen, but 2nd gen requires a wired setup.

- it's bulky as hell. This is the Ring, not the Ring Pro.
- When you press the button, and you answer it on the phone ... it freezes for a bit after you end it on the phone side.
- No real-time view with gen1 Ring on battery. It's enabled via software only if it's wired
- Can't confirm, but if you're a GC Asian, after 30 days you can't see anything in the past, i.e. it doesn't save clips; that's a monthly fee feature. (well, duh.) Arlos at least give you 7 days free ('forever'...)
- Friend has a Ring Pro wired up, and he likes it alot...
